Now that we finished the 12 kata from Shoden, one of the most frequently used techniques in exams and competitions is Shohatto. Shohatto and ZNKR Mae are often performed without clear distinction, so I would like to explain the differences between Shohatto in the Shoden and ZNKR Mae.
First, in ZNKR Mae, to sit in Seiza you go into a squatting position (sonkyo), then put the left, then the right knee down. Hold the Koiguchi, apply Seme with Tsukagashira to the centerline (Seichusen), strike the temple (Komikame). Up to this point, the steps are the same, but the next step is where the difference lies. In ZNKR Mae, Furikaburi is done as to stab next to your ear, then cut down without dipping the tip of the sword. For Chiburi, feel as if to stab the opponent at your right side. The rest is the same. Noto from Tsumamoto. Do the Noto according to your Ryuha (school). Once finished, release the hand and go back. Also, in ZNKR Mae, after the Nukitsuke, apply seme by bringing your left knee next to your right heel.
In contrast, in Shohatto, you sit by pulling your left knee back then the right knee. Draw following the angle of the sword. On Furikaburi, the left knee is pushed forward firmly, and the sword tip goes next to your shoulder. The tip of the sword may drop slightly during this movement, but it naturally rises as you cut. You step significantly forward with the left, with the back leg slightly following. The back leg do not follow in ZenKenRen (Seitei Iai). For Chiburi, if ZenKenRen's Mae was stabbing the opponent to your right, in Shinden it is as if stabbing an opponent behind you. The rest is the Same. Noto from Tsumamoto. You release your hand while going backward, or in some styles, you may finish sheathing in a different way. Follow your school.
