Ian was a brillliant musician. He had a 'rough' appearance and he kept a persona for his music. But he was a lovely man, and his deep lyrics bear that out. He was a pussy cat in disguise. He loved people, and hated nasty things done to them.
I saw The Blockheads a few years back, in Dartford park. Unfortunately minus the absolute legend which was Mr Dury. Derek the draw did vocals and did an amazing job. Dury is considered to be a true legend in every sense of the word and was/still is loved by millions. If you ever met him and told him how brilliant he is, he would most probably tell you to f@$# off. Brilliant sense of humour and a very genuine person. Very down to earth and lovable. His son Baxter Dury is a musician too and he knows how much his father influenced others and how loved he was by millions of people. I bet he is so proud.
I think you'd love the video, it really adds something special seeing them perform it, the energy is incredible, it still blows me away today, a timeless banger!
The backing band, The Blockheads, were absolutely brilliant musicians. Chaz Jankel on keyboards was the genius behind it. The quarter note bass playing by Norman Watt-Roy is legendary. More than just a funny song - although Dury gives a tour de force invoking both pathos and bathos - the rhythm section is mesmerising. You could listen to it all day. Apparently the 114th highest selling UK single. An all time British classic.
"Disco Punk" love the description. Another great tune to come out of the late 70's. I was never in to Punk at the time ( slightly on the young side) but the influence it had on the British post Punk music scene of the late 70's and early 80s was incredible.
Dury came out of the British Pub Rock Band scene of the 1970s, initially with Kilburn and the High Roads and then the Blockheads. Dury was a victim of polio which had crippled his body and gave him a lopsided stance at the microphone, using the microphone stand as almost a crutch. However, this illness didn't stop Dury's being the front man for bands and acting in various films and TV productions. There is a film drama of Dury's life called Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, named after one of Dury's songs, the role of Dury being played by Andy Serkis.
I like the little kick by the piano every beat. By the way, what sounded like 2 saxophones after the solo was, in fact, 2 saxophones. There's a live version that shows it. And the bass line is extraordinary. ian Dury was an original, that's for sure.
This was from 1978 when literally _anyone_ had a shot at a hit, even a 36-year old cockney polio victim... this actually reached number 1 and sold a million copies in the UK, at which point the record label (the notoriously daft Stiff Records) deleted it... as you noted, Dury's band The Blockheads are absolutely top tier, especially on this track bassist Norman Watt-Roy and sax player Davey Payne, though the bandleader was the amazing Chaz Jankel - loved your reaction, thanks!

How could deleting a record help a record company financially? You'd think they would want to make even more money selling a gold certified record rather than trashing it.
@@hanierfamily - I thought it was just Stiff being daft, but according to wiki "As sales of the single approached the one million mark, in February 1979 Stiff announced that the record would be deleted when it reached the milestone, and the dealer ordering the millionth copy of the single would receive a "mystery prize".[13] However, sales stalled at 979,000 during the single's original chart run, and it was not until downloads were made eligible for inclusion in the UK singles chart, from 2004 onwards, that "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" finally became a million-seller.[14]"

Ian Dury was such a unique singer and performer with one of the best back up bands you could ever wish to have. I hope you can play some of their other hits.
Plaistow Patricia Now there’s a track. For those that aren’t familiar with London’s East End, it’s not exactly a honeymoon destination to put it politely! Ian D was a very intelligent and ironic songwriter and poet. When disabled people were seen but not heard.
Great song ! Did you know that when Ian Dury was in the band Kilburn and the High Roads the lads from Madness would go and watch them play in clubs and bars, Suggs from Madness has said that one of the bands biggest influences were Ian Dury and Kilburn and the High Roads. Suggs wrote the lyrics to the song Baggy Trousers in what he said to be the style of Ian Dury. Keep up the good work.
What more can you say? Ian Drury's finest. I also have soft spot for What A Waste.by him and the Blockheads. At thv time they were described by the press as "punk disco".
Ian Dury and The Blockheads, were included in the New Wave movement in the UK at the time this came out, another track along the same lines to check out is, 'Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3'. Ian was a Polio victim, he caught it at a public swimming baths as a child, it left him partially paralysed.

Yeah. He was particularly needy today. He's been avoiding us in the past 2 weeks, up until recently, because he's got allergies, and we keep wiping his ears with water to remove any dander and pollen. It's finally worked, and now he wants us all the time to cuddle - and to pet him until all the loose fur is not bothering him anymore. :)
Hey ..... i live within earshot of Tiger Bay!!! Ian was fab, crippled with polio, walked with stick..... He's up there with a Ray Davies as one of the finest songwriters to come out of these isles..... and there's a few of them!
Apart from being a thoroughly, sound bloke. Ian would've found himself at a severe disadvantage in a fight, given that Polio left him partially disabled. Glad you like the song. The Blockheads were a great band. I think they still are.

Some fun facts: The song was recorded "live", but the official video is mimed. As others have said - the sax after you paused is indeed one person playing 2 saxophones at the same time. The highly regarded base line is nuts during the verses, and more sedate during the chorus, the opposite to the rest of the band I know it sounds like the band all turned up with music to different songs, but after a few listens it all makes sense. Eskimo, Arapahoe.
British pop music (with a little help from the U.S. and a certain Swedish band) from 1975 to 1985 was the peak of music mountain and sadly we've been tumbling down the other side ever since when the music 'industry' sold out to hip-hop and rap. The fact that kids were going out buying sophisticated musicianship like this on a 7" record then tells you everything you need to know about were popular music is now.
We are 80's kids. Hip Hop wasn't the problem. The industry itself deliberately pushed to dumb down music to make it a product, instead of art. Today's popular music is made to be background music to play in mall speakers.

I was at a Madness concert and the sound quality was awful, so me and my friend stepped outside. After a few minutes Ian Dury turned up and he underwent a tirade of abuse from a bunch of skinheads regarding his physical disabilities. Disillusioned? Of course I was!

If you wanna talk about humorous and talented musicians to match, you're right with Weird Al, but go one further with his biggest influence Frank Zappa and you'll even more right! Comedy was a huge part of Zappas music that most people don't realise or hear (probably because he did like 100 different albums lol), but his musicians are literal legends. Steve Vai, Vinnie Coliuata, Chad Wackerman, Terry Bozzio, George Duke, Ruth Underwood, etc etc... As for Zappa and his comedy, just check out "Does humor belong in music" live DVD to start! Was often controversial and not for the light hearted, but I find a lot of it hilarious.
