Ian Hunter Defiance Part 1 : Album Review : CD and Vinyl (Sun Records)
Vibrant, relevant, joyous, Ian Hunter delivers one of the best albums of his career.
I have the pleasure of reviewing an album I’ve been eagerly anticipating for quite some time: Ian Hunter’s “Defiance Part 1.” As a devoted fan of Ian Hunter, his unique voice and heartfelt lyrics have resonated with me throughout the years. Let’s dive into this remarkable album and explore why it stands out among his extensive discography.
A Reflection on Ian Hunter’s Impact:
Before we delve into “Defiance,” I want to take a moment to reflect on the influence of Ian Hunter. His first solo album, released in 1975, captivated me with its introspective and thought-provoking lyrics. One such example is the poignant poem that concludes the album, “Ain’t Easy.” This piece left a lasting impression on me, and I found myself connecting deeply with Hunter’s storytelling abilities.
“Defiance”: A Long-Awaited Album:
“Defiance” arrives as a long-awaited album from Ian Hunter, and it doesn’t disappoint. With the vinyl and CD versions in hand, I embarked on a musical journey that reaffirmed Hunter’s enduring talent. The album showcases Hunter’s ability to deliver authentic and heartfelt songs, drawing listeners in with his unmistakable voice.
Guest Artists Enhancing the Experience:
“Defiance” boasts an impressive lineup of guest artists, including Jeff Beck, Johnny Depp, Taylor Hawkins, and Joe Elliott, among others. Sometimes collaborations can feel disjointed, but in this case, each artist adds a unique flavor while respecting the integrity of the music. For instance, the opening track, “Defiance,” featuring Slash, demonstrates the synergy between the musicians and their dedication to the song’s rock-centric sound.
Highlights from “Defiance”:
Throughout the album, there are several standout tracks that deserve special mention. “Bed of Roses,” featuring Ringo Starr, is a love-infused ballad that showcases Hunter’s ability to craft compelling melodies and lyrics. It’s a song that resonates with hope and inspiration, reminding us of the power of love in our lives.
“I Hate Hate” is an unforgettable track that immediately captivates listeners with its infectious piano riff. Its message resonates strongly, urging us to rise above hate and embrace understanding and compassion. Hunter’s masterful songwriting shines through, delivering lyrics that are both thought-provoking and uplifting.
The album also features tracks like “Kiss and Makeup,” with contributions from Billy Gibbons and Billy Bob Thornton, offering a swampy bluesy sound that adds a unique flavor to the collection. The closing track, “This Is What I’m Here For,” showcases Hunter’s signature rock style and serves as a reminder to follow our passions and pursue what we love.
The Essence of “Defiance”:
“Defiance” is an album that encapsulates the essence of Ian Hunter’s music. It is a testament to his longevity, creativity, and ability to connect with his audience. Hunter’s lyrics touch upon universal themes of hope, resilience, and love, serving as a beacon of light in our sometimes tumultuous world.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, “Defiance” by Ian Hunter is a masterpiece that solidifies his status as a legendary artist. It is a collection of songs that resonates deeply, with each track offering a unique experience. The collaboration with guest artists elevates the album, showcasing the harmonious blend of talent and musicality.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to Ian Hunter’s music, “Defiance” is a must-listen. It’s a testament to the enduring power of rock and the artistry of a musician who continues to inspire and captivate audiences even after decades in the industry.

I can't imagine producing something with such vitality at such an advanced age. That he even continues to make records at this point, and that they're of such high quality, I just, well, I can't imagine a Bob Dylan, or anybody of the same age, The Stones, McCartney, doing something like this. Ian just defies all the templates. You never know who's gonna still be pulling the sled at the end of the race, man. I can't say I predicted it would be Ian, but I'm sure not surprised, either. Kudos, Mr. Hunter - here's to the lifelong underdog, who became the lead dog, in the end.

I was stoked when I heard "Bed Of Roses" and that there was a new album. Campbell's performance would have made Mick Ronson proud. You don't need liner notes to know who plays on "Feelings", his sound is so recognizable. I happened to see this video just days after another artist (a band) now in their 60s put out a brilliant album. Now I have two great records to listen to.

Hello Phil, I just stumbled onto your channel while surfing Ian Hunter videos here on RU-vid. At the age of 15 I got the Mott The Hoople Live album for Christmas in 1973. I followed Ian Hunter ever since and I tell people that Ian Hunter is my #1 favorite music artist to this very day. I am 66 years young and I listen to Ian Hunter almost on a daily basis. His lyrics and music are just amazing and brings out a whole spectrum of emotions with each song. Ian Hunter has incredible talent and stamina for a man in his 80's. I can only hope for more great music to come from Ian Hunter! I really enjoyed your review, and you have a new subscriber here in the states!

This is on my want list. Ian says it's Becks last recording. Mark Knopflers new Charity single ( with 50 guest guitarists) mentions that it's Beck last recording. Right away I recognized The Poem from Hunters first LP. I mentioned to IH in 1988 that alot of his LPs include a poem. I bought the 1st solo LP week of release just on the merit of a snippet of " I Get So Excited" LP advertisement on radio. ( They used to do this back then.) THANX

I think most of us Mott / Ian Hunter fans spent years climbing up the mountains and crawling down the holes - one magical album followed by one rather naff one. I really wish the 'All the Young Dudes' album had been produced with the power of 'Mott,' but there you go. You'd get 'Ian Hunter,' and 'All American Alien Boy, ' and 'You're Never Alone,' interlaced with 'Overnight Angels,' and 'Short Back n Sides,' and 'All the Good Ones Are Taken.' Oh dear! But, in this century, Ian has truly turned the plastic into gold - just one great album after the next. And I would say this, Defiance 1, is the best of all of them. I am a huge Andy York fan, and a huge Mick Ronson fan, and a huge Mick Ralphs fan (as a guitarist), but they are all restrained, tasteful, don't-waste-a-note guitarists, and it cannot be denied that this album, replete with the other, swaggering kind, gets a huge lift out of the difference. Ian has always done something slightly different with each album. Well, not quite true - once he swung around quite shockingly in style - a little random - from one album to the next. But, in recent years, that is how it has been. Each album has its feel, and each album is great, and we 50-year fans no longer fear that something of a clunker is coming next. We have lost our fear. We live in oblivion of more dramatic times. And I, for one, am most grateful. Yes, another superb album from the man who has written so many excellent deep track songs, and I have every confidence that Defiance 2 will be a little bit different again and just as wonderful.

Yes, I'm ordering these asap as Hunter just keeps delivering top shelf songs all the time. Bed of Roses is masterful. I've always bought Hunter since I read his "Diary..." in '76 (the cover of thePanther paperback edition had me, so cool but didn't know who he was before then!). I then bought "All American..." and his first solo.Only then did I get my first Mott album, which was "Live". It's so inspiring and awesome that he's still at it and we are all the better off for it.Glad you gave "Waterlow" a nod. I spent a lot of time in that park as a kid living in Highgate and it is one of my top five Hunter songs of all time. What an amazing journey he's had so far! Great review and hopefully we'll have a Part 2 coming our way soon🙂. Still trying to hunt down a copy of the "Stranded in Realty" box set...

Hi Phil. I had the CD on pre-order and received it on the release day. I've played it a few times and it's going to be a good one! I've copied it onto CD-R so that I can have a copy permanently in my car. I've done that with all my Ian Hunter albums since Shrunken Heads (that's when I got a car with a CD player) and can have new albums repeat until they become familiar. I may have told this tale before, but when Artful Dodger came out I was a carer for my mum so didn't get as much opportunity to play CDs in the house as much. Add that to me not being overly impressed with the disc on first listen; unjustly I felt the title track felt like self parody. Later, with familiarity, I realised my error. Also, I barely heard Rant. As already mentioned, a car that had a CD player allowed me to properly hear Shrunken Heads and I loved it. I therefore went back to try out Rant. This became what is probably my favourite Ian Hunter album - and I had missed out on it for six years! Thereafter I educated myself with the Artful Dodger. Having ended work, journeys in the car are not as frequent, and COVID reduced my shopping journeys in favour of on-line shopping. I therefore won't be on the repeated-listening trek as often, so Defiance won't get the default thrashing like Rant and Shrunken Heads. That means I will need to adjust my in-house activities to play more CDs. From what I've heard of the album, that shouldn't be too onerous! Great review, Phil. I'll be playing the disc again tomorrow.

Hi Phil, great review of what sounded like at first listen a great album! I played it the other day and was very impressed! One of my favourite albums Ian Hunter was involved with was when he together with Mick Ronson produced Ellen Foley`s first solo album `Night Out` in 1979. As well as producing and playing on the album Ian wrote the last track called `Don`t Let Go`. Sadly it was a one off as Ellen started dating Mick Jones from The Clash and he took over the reins for her next album. Well worth a listen though I think of it as a great Friday night album! Back to the new album and I would like to add it to my collection but not certain at the moment wether to go for the vinyl or CD?
