One of my best friends' sister (Carola Hanson-Ronson) married Mick Ronson and I met him on 2 occasions, as an amateur musician I played one of my songs when he tried to give my friend's sister Carola assistance in producing and promoting her and their co-written songs. Mick was such a down-to-earth guy and humble and patient. I was drunk one time in London during Carola Hanson-Ronson's record release and tried to make Mick introduce me to Paul McCartney but it failed and was very embarrassing for me to push him for. I only saw Paul at a distance when he left the studio.
i ve heard just about a mug full of bad stuff n bad people in the hall of fame, and Hoople /Hunter are rock n roll enough that i dont care that they arent in there .their bad enough that they can be o n the outside n their legend will still sustain . they dont need to be in a museum with pop n rap people .
As a teenager I had Mott playing constantly. Mad Shadows, Brain Capers, Rock and Roll Queen. I still have them all. A couple are framed in my man cave now. Old records never die.
Went to the Cleveland Show from North Tonawanda, NY (near Niagara Falls). It was an amazing and emotional show for my brother and I. We saw Ian back in 1979 twice and also a number of times in the last 10 years with The Rant Band. Listening to I Wish I was Your Mother, Walking With a Mountain, Honaloochie Boogie, Roll Away The Stone, Golden Age of Rock and Roll, All The Way From Memphis, the excellent Medley starting with Jerkin Crockus, One of The Boys, Rock and Roll Queen, Crash Street Kids, Death May Be Your Santa Claus, Violence and more was great. As a kid listening to Mott, The Hoople, All The Young Dudes and then buying the earlier albums in 1974 as a 14 year old and then to hear these songs live was a special night for us. Ian Hunter and Mott The Hoople deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Heck Ian's piano is at the Rock Hall right now. The one he wrote Cleveland Rocks on. Time to induct Ian Hunter and Mott The Hoople. Do the right thing!!!!
Unnoticed???? They sold out nearly every show on their brief April tour including the NYC Beacon Theatre where fans were standing the entire show screaming like teenagers and Ian was moving around the stage like he was 40 instead of 80. Clearly, Ian Hunter got super excited playing music with Ariel Bender and Morgan Fisher as "Mott The Hoople '74."
My first three LP record purchases when I was 17 yrs old were Mott the Hoople, Alice Cooper and TRex the Slider. Detroit radio stations played some excellent rock music on the airwaves back then. FM rock radio is pathetic today here in LA.
Diary of a Rock n Roll Star is arguably, or undeniably the Best book on the subject ever written. I first read it when it was initially published and its a book i go back to quite often. Read before you die.
Ian Hunter playing at rock and roll hall of fame with Def Leppard, this mini US tour, and Uk tour is giving Mott more exposure, which I think is a precursor to their finally getting in the hall of fame. Long overdue. Mott the Hoople Live passes any litmus test for what is pure rock and roll in its truest sense.
I often think to myself I need to catch up with Ian, he was my most formative vocalist/lyricist next to Dylan. So happy that I stumbled upon this post, can't believe he will be back in the USA.
Credit to Ian for getting through this so graciously. She never put him at ease and her awful interview style came across like a trainee researcher with a crib sheet. The questions never flowed or connected with the answers and there was little follow-up to Ian's replies. He could almost have said anything in response and she'd have carried on. He was even sat like a fairground coconut while she threw things at him. I'll bet the other guys were glad they missed this one. Sit him down with Alice next time to talk about the old days.
She wasn't that bad. She could have been a bit more casual in her delivery, though. She touched on the the Bowie and Queen connections but at least she didn't hammer it to death. We've heard the same old stories ad nauseam and don't need to go there again. Hunter didn't pal around with Bowie or Mercury. I think many fans and interviewers alike are surprised when they learn (not from this interview, however) that Hunter's last meeting with Bowie occurred in 1976. She was more informed than many interviewers who simply look at the list of well-known Mott/Hunter songs, the "David Bowie-to-the-rescue" episode and the Queen tour. For a 30 minute interview I was entertained. Thank goodness "All the Young Dudes" wasn't even mentioned. You know Hunter has been asked the same old questions 1000's of times. She at least attempted to take the interview in new directions.
@@edwardshirley9314 you're right. I viewed an interview recently whereby Hunter revealed that the last time they met or spoke was in NYC shortly after the release of Bowie's "Station to Station." Regardless, it's apparent that the 2 were cut from different cloths and didn't spend time together.
Been wanting to know more about Mott the Hoople. Found this tonight. Oh happy me. EDIT: Yep, I'm back, 7-6-2022...so delightful hearing Ian Hunter speak about Freddie Mercury , how great Queen was with them on the road in the 70's and about the BohRap movie - first third wimpish. The best today was hearing him recall those days on the road ...'Fred was Fred 'wonderful', chuckled, said, not like he was in the movie. "Love you, Mr. Hunter" Yesterday my very own CD 'All-American Alien Boy' came from Amazon. Now gotta get the lyrics! I will!
You have such a profound impact on my career that even the biggest thank you text would fall shout to express my gratitude. Thanks for your support and the love shown stay safe ❤️❤️❤️
!974 front row seats at Music Hall, Cincinnati with Aerosmith opening up. Joints were passed down the row all night long. One of the greatest shows I've been to!!!
I just saw this concert at The Chicago Theater. They were AMAZING! Great voices, phenomenal guitar playing and the drummer was unbelievable. Don't miss this reunion tour!!
I was at that same Chicago Theater Concert. I even snuck down to an empty seat in the 8th row about halfway through the concert. Ian and his entire band hit all the notes that night!
Wow! Ian’s such a hero to me and I’m so happy to say I’ve seen him live many times and was lucky enough to meet him too. Mott the Hoople are probably my favorite band of all time, and there albums are fantastic, and the MOTT LIVE album, to me, is one of my favorite albums ever! I so wish I could have seen Mott the Hoople in the 70’s, but time marches on and I’ll always have the memories and albums to enjoy for the rest of my life. Thank you Ian & MTH!! 👍🏼
Dear Mr. H, I have made it to 3:36 seconds and i have to stop and take a break...thanks for being gracious enough to put up with stupid questions... for me its about the music, thanks for keepin on keepin on Mr.H, I really like that jacket, and when I revisit this painful interview I hope one of these questions will reveal something about that, i'd be willing to bet that it's being worn out of respect for some one in the service, anyway, some things really do get better with age, as Mr. H is walkin proof, thanks for stickin around so some of us can bask in our former glory days of youth, that never dies with a song in your heart, and a house full of grandchildren.
Guys like Ian Hunter are as rare as truth from a government official and that’s rare, he made it out of the 70s relatively unscathed, I find him a frank tell it like it is sort of bloke but without being rude or like “well what do you want me to say” kind of kick, when you look at and listen to Ian Hunter he is like a moving shifting canvas of his life’s experience with him vs the rest and Mott the hoople…..also I have to say the song he wrote about his mate THE LATE GREAT MICK RONSON…..always and I mean always makes me cry because you can hear his pain his anger his frustration and his sense of loss in his lyrics it is a perfectly beautiful goodbye song…IAN HUNTER MATE YOU ARE FIRST CLASS and I admire your abilities as a musician/singer/songwriter and human being god bless and may you continue to be a breath of fresh air in the world of making music.
saw Ian Hunter & The Rant Band twice at Filmore West San Francisco! fabulous live band James Mastro is a guitarist for Rant Band also. Ian is a True rock star
brian may has said on record that Queen owe mott a lot as mott showed them how to put a show together and be a live band, mott were huge in the early 70's and wrote great music 👑✊🏼🇬🇧
love the interview, could you adjust the balance volume of the interviewer equal to Ian, because you blast and it is shattering... nice questions but your voice is just BOOM!
In the 70's,my hi school yrs, Mott the Hoople were/was the epitome of " body boppin, ear-schplittn, fuckin-A rock n roll!".. " I'd like to introduce to you to A..R..I..E..L..... BENDER" "Walking With a Mountain"
I am ashamed of my city that Ian Hunter is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And for that matter, neither is Johnny Rivers, Joe Cocker or J. Giles.
I saw them at the tower theater in 1975. And if they opened for Alice Cooper in 1974 I must’ve seen them twice because I saw Alice Cooper at the spectrum in 1974.
Steve Jones (Ex Sex Pistol), here in LA is the only radio DJ in America who will play great music such as Ian Hunter, Mott the Hoople , Mick Ronson, Alice Cooper, Velvet Underground, and much more excellent rock.
It looks like he’s being interrogated - surprised there isn’t a spotlight in his face and a black background. Where are Morgan and Luther? it’s great anyone is exposing Ian/Mott, but....
Felt lucky to see Queen on their very first US tour opening from Mott the Hoople! Then got to see Ian Hunter solo with Mick Ronson! To my most favorite shows I ever saw here in Kansas City! I've always loved Ian Hunter and when he was with Mick Ronson I thought he was a fantastic guitar player to be with
Really the "song writer situation" in Rock Bands..it's just not fair to the other guys going through a lot of the same struggle. I can understand the major Royalty going to the main songwriter who's sitting away working while everyone else are not..but some contributor royalties should really go to the guys who made the record "better by some contribution to the recording..or in the arranging..." Which usually is the case. On early Black Sabbath records I'd see songs written all credited to "Black Sabbath"..Anyway..Roll away the stone..
I was curious about this band and bought an anthology many years ago.I have to say that All The Young Dudes was one of my least favorite songs off the entire 2 discs.Never got into that song.Kinda boring.Honaloochie Boogie is great though.
