IBS & the low FODMAP diet
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder affecting approximately 15% of people worldwide. Characterised by lower abdominal pain and discomfort, bloating, wind, distension and altered bowel habit (ranging from diarrhoea to constipation), the condition causes considerable discomfort and daily disruption for the sufferer. Researchers at Monash University have developed a diet strategy to manage IBS symptoms known as the low FODMAP diet. FODMAPs are a group of carbohydrates.
This diet is the product of extensive research which has quantified the FODMAP content of hundreds of foods, described the mechanism by which the diet works and shown that a low FODMAP diet improves symptom control in approximately three out of every four people with IBS.
Join us as we go on a journey to understand the physiological effects of FODMAPs and the dramatic effects of a low FODMAP diet in people with IBS.
If you have any questions about the diet, please email fodmap.feedback@monash.edu.

My favorite part is the visualization of the gut microbe releasing gas, and how it causes bloating and abdominal pain. Nicely done!

My son missed 5 months of school with out of control IBS. Finally found a pediatric nutritionist who worked with us to change his diet to low FODMAPs (no one else even knew what this was). 2 years later, he's 12 years old and you would never know that he had such horrible problems. He knows how to "test" foods that are new and has successfully been able to add many foods back into his diet, some completely and others with limits. Life changing for him and the family. I just wish more American brands were tested. Thank you Monash University!

This needs more promoting, my GP recently suggested I look into the FODMAP diet. As I've suffered with IBS for over half my life I can honestly say it's amazing to eat without experiencing discomfort/bloating/pain after. I'm a vegetarian and always felt I was eating a healthy, mainly plant based diet... I now see the error of my ways using onion, garlic and mushroom in most of my meals. I've tried a gluten free, wheat free diet but never felt the relief I feel now. It's ashame I didn't discover this sooner! Thanks again :)

This is really comforting to hear - I'm almost 30 and have spent most of my life trapped indoors because of terrible IBS pain / issues. It's taken over my entire life.. Anyway I'm hoping to give this a shot soon - I'm rubbish with food and my ADD makes planning meals impossible lol - also I've been a vegetarian for the last 10 years also... so it's nice to know I wont have to give that up for my health.... not to often you hear of people having to think about eating meat for their health lol. All the best.

Ive been doing it for 7 months now and its really helped. I have introduced somethings back gradually, like milk and not had a problem. Still avoid eating garlic and onion. Definitely recommend giving it a go, I take a multi-vitamin but my diet is still quite varied. :)

I'm a veggie as well and have bought recently their app and been using it for cca. 2 weeks. I can confirm that gluten and wheat free diet, with NO GARLIC, NO ONIONS and NO MUSHROOMS + NO COFFEE (AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! incl. sodas etc.) + NO CHOCOLATE (only dark) and only some types of dairy is a FUCKING MIRACLE! I haven't been feeling this comfort since a long time ago. I think I memorized the list of what I cannot eat (the red foods) in 5 minutes, that's how much I wanted to get rid of this stuff; not even my career has seen such dedication in my life time, haha. By the way, I take B12 under the tongue but I am getting really irritated, I tried taking it as a pill but still my IBS kicks in, did you had the same issue if you took vitamin B12 (for vegans)?

I wish I could eat a low FODMAP diet, but I'm only 13, so I have to eat what I'm served...😭 I eat healthy, though, and that has definitely helped. Also I try to avoid dairy.

miamar glad you eat a healthy diet. If you do have IBS, then you will need medical advice about which diet will work best for you, or other strategies (such as hypnotherapy). If you have any questions about the low FODMAP diet, please email the team at fodmap.feedback@monash.edu

I was looking for an video to explain the Low FODMAP diet to a client. This is excellent! Thanks Monash. I do wish you would explore SIBO as well tho. I was on the LOW FODMAP diet for years to quell my symptoms, but it wasn't until I addressed SIBO that I really felt better.

Hi Alistair, it's great that the low FODMAP diet is helping you so much. A note about gluten in the diet: When following the low FODMAP diet, fructans and other FODMAPs, but not gluten, are restricted. A strict life-long ‘gluten-free’ diet is only required if you have been diagnosed with coeliac disease. See more at: www.med.monash.edu/cecs/gastro/fodmap/faq.html, or send questions directly to the Monash University Low FODMAP research team at fodmap.feedback@monash.edu.

Sad but true for IBS sufferers, as apples contain fructose, a monosaccharide, the 'M' referred to in 'FODMAP'. See more at: www.monashfodmap.com/about-fodmap-and-ibs/

If basically the entire small intestine and large intestine is affected, why do I only fell pain in the lower gut, just below my belly button? Also, I was under the impression that most of the pain comes from the large intestine where undigested stuff is eaten by bacteria which give off gas and other substances that cause the pain.

'People with IBS have very sensitive intestines'. Where is the evidence for that? I presume IBS is usually of unknown etiology, so how can you say one person experiences more pain in their intestines than another when you don't really know what is causing it?
@lesporches
@lesporches 8 лет назад
Good question. There are some studies which find that IBS patients respond to painful gut stimuli differently than control groups: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21443723 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19595511 I think the observations of visceral hypersensitivity in IBS doesn't necessarily provide a causal mechanism. But the evidence does seem to me to suggest that hypersensitivity could be associated.
@sulichnalednosandok8862
@sulichnalednosandok8862 6 лет назад
Jake Fryer As simple as that Pain threshold is different for each of us. That's is why some of us experience more pain than others. Despite etiology of pain. Brain chemistry nothing more

Maybe it was a "ripe sugar banana" in the bowl? Those are high FodMap.
@MonashSTM
@MonashSTM 8 лет назад
Hi erksp, the bananas used included the video as an example of high FODMAP foods are actually ripe sugar bananas and not regular bananas, so they are high in excess fructose. Our apologies for any confusion caused. Best wishes, The Monash FODMAP team.

Why is this app so expensive :( almost 30 PLN...
@MonashSTM
@MonashSTM 7 лет назад
nipph, all money raised from app sales goes directly into low FODMAP diet research, so more foods can be included in the app. Everyone using the app benefits because of the inclusion of extra information at no extra cost beyond the original purchase price. If you have any particular questions, please email the team directly, at fodmap.feedback@monash.edu.

On a chart on the website it says bananas are low but in the video they are shown as high!!!???
@MonashSTM
@MonashSTM 7 лет назад
Nigel Ackroyd, FODMAPs may vary depending on ripeness and type of fruit. In this case, the bananas featured in the video as an example of high FODMAP foods are actually ripe sugar bananas, not regular bananas, so they are high in excess fructose. Apologies for the confusion! The Monash Low FODMAP research team are happy to answer questions about the diet. Write to them at fodmap.feedback@monash.edu

Hi I've had ibs for a long time now I've basically tried everything I also had a igg test for celiac disease which was normal and also took antibiotic rifaxamin which didn't help at all and every food that I eat gives me discomfort (ibs symtoms) what I want to know is that is this app helpful because my doctor said he can't do anything and I'm out of options.
