@@Beepbopboop19 I guess I’m lucky that at my age I can only eat small meals & only cook for myself . My favourite recipe is Garlic Prawns . I use a garlic infused oil for my prawns & only add flat rice noodles with bok choy.
@@breezyplace garlic , onion were some of the first steps to eliminate from my diet to see if I still had symptoms. It took 6 months to work out what foods I had an intolerance to & thankfully I could have these in my diet . My intolerance in foods are mannitol & sorbitol found in fruit & veges . The FODMAP app keeps me on track & sometimes I’m unsure of certain foods .
That happened to me also the other night. I wanted something "dessert-like" so in the past I have eaten cereal for evening snack. I ran out of rice cereal and only had raisin bran. BIG mistake. I was in/out of bathroom from 2AM to 5AM!
I’m about to start this diet and I literally want to cry already. So many foods that I love are going to be going away. Part of me just want to feel awful then to start living a life with what sounds like a life with so much bond food. Thanks for the video.
@@georgiatortello3067 I tried the diet plan but I still contained to have issues. I went to the doctor where I’ve had many test done and took tons of antibiotics. And as fast as my stomach issues started, they just stopped. I am very lucky that whatever it was, it seems to have gone.
When you got to number 7, I actually broke down and cried. It came from no where, I didn’t even realize how overwhelmed I was. Thank you for your warm words of encouragement.
It's just like for my son's high salt is important for them. Yes I get to eat as much salt as they want. And we have had so many people say that's so unhealthy. And I returned with the doctors told him to eat lots of salt.
Just got diagnosed a few days ago, I have been struggling with these symptoms for the past 4 years, I am so glad I am not alone in this. Thank you for this video, love from South Africa!
Hi IBS has controlled my life for 49 yrs and I finally went to a dietician who listened to me . I’m 61 yrs old male. She showed me the diet as eveyone else was totally overwhelmed with so many choices which is not good for me. I downloaded the diet but she patiently went over it and turned me on to the Fody website. I’m practical and love convenience. So she actually sent me full week menu earlier just for me to help me get started.
I have Crohn's and I am going through the fodmap process now. I love how you said come up with one phrase for other people. People like to socialize around food, there have been many times I don't eat but I know others are uncomfortable.
I've had colitis for at least 10 years (i'm 26) and I was diagnosed with IBS last week, I really loved finally KNOWING why my pain was so recurrent, but also I am so new and so surprised everytime I find out a high fodmap food that I thought was healthy or I loved, like bread, watermelon or mango! I was also cutting meat out of my diet and now that I can't eat all types of beans, including soy, it's been hard. Finding this video and your channel right now was a blessing! Thank you! :)
My short explanation phrase is "Low Fodmap is an exclusion diet where you exclude all sensitivity foods like dairy/gluten/corn syrup at once". People understand immediately that it is difficult.
I don’t really cook so starting low Fodmaps has been really hard. It’s been a 1.5 year nightmare for me so far. I’m always in pain, don’t get out of bed a lot, not working much did you it, and always worried about my finances and health. I lost 30 lbs due to Gastritis, SIBO, and low pancreatic enzymes. Also, severe constipation. I didn’t expect my life to turn out this way. I’m trying to take steps to feel better but one wrong food and I’m in extreme distress. My anxiety doesn’t help either and def fuels all of this. I’m glad to find your channel and can’t wait to explore more.
Was just diagnosed with IBS a week ago, found this video, and it's so helpful! Low-FODMAP seemed very overwhelming and still does a bit right now, so thanks for posting this video! :)
So glad I happened along this channel. I am not diagnosed yet but no doubt this is SIBO. I had been dealing with silent reflux and finally was getting a grip on low acid diet then got shingles and i think antiviral medication got me here along with low acid in my gut. I am surviving on potato and zuchinni. It has been difficult with without plant based guidance. Thanks for posting. I am hopeful. -j
My addition to the label reading tip: Read the label every time you pick out a food. The manufacturers can and will change the ingredients with no announcement. My experience was with a cranberry oatmeal snack bar that was made with cane sugar the first time I bought it. Then one day I ate one that made me sick. I found the box for that purchase and discovered that the manufacturer swapped out the cane sugar for agave syrup that doesn’t agree with me. I’ve been dealing with IBS for 20+ years. It’s always good to review tips. Thanks for your list of 12.
As someone who has been on different levels of this diet for years these are great tips. Especially pre preparing snacks and lunches. When your on the go, it's really easy to not want to take the time to make something that your belly will appreciate so preparing stuff ahead of time reduces the likelihood you'll eat something you regret later.
Lol, I was in that phase where I was feeling good and got cocky and ate a dinner FULL of garlic and had a glass of wine. Now I feel terrible and I can't sleep so I'm here watching your videos. I haven't been officially diagnosed but it definitely feels like I could have IBS. It's only been two months of having major gut issues and it seriously sucks so I am not feeling optimistic about living with it potentially for the rest of my life (not even sure if this is how IBS works - need to do more research). It's nice hearing from others so I feel less alone. Read some comments where people say they have dealt with this issue for years and I just have to say wowza you guys are strong and inspirational!
I have celiac and IBS and I'm going to start eliminating caffiene, alcohol, and fried foods starting today. If that doesn't work I'm going to start doing this. It's so depressing to be so restrictive but I can't live in pain anymore.
I have a friend who was diagnosed with celiac. At the beginning of her journey she had to eliminate not just gluten but also all dairy products so that her gut could heal. Eventually she was able to add the dairy back in. Hopefully your gut will be able to heal so that you can have some of the foods back later that you love
Look at gluten! My issues were onions, garlic, lactose and gluten and eating too big of a meal at one sitting. Smaller meals with snacks in between helped me.
I honestly feel like I have IBS, and I haven't been diagnosed, just got referred by the GI to pelvic floor therapy which was too expensive after a while, and advised to take Metamucil. I got a blood test which didn't reveal anything and they didn't know or really test anything else like my stools, so they said I could have IBS but there was no diagnosis. I'm trying one of my first Low FODMAP recipes and this is the first time I actually enjoyed my dinner without being in pain or bloating or constipation and diarrhea together. It's pretty hard since my family only eats my trigger foods and my dad makes fun of me for eating veggies instead of meat and pasta like a normal Italian (surprisingly i can stomach garlic but not pasta or tomato sauce). I just feel so happy i made and ate something with no problems! This video was really helpful, thank you!
I just found your channel and I subscribed immediately. I have suffered from IBS my entire life and never heard of the low FODMAP diet. I am nor vegan but am not apposed to eating vegan meals. I am going to be watching a bunch of your videos. So excited to start my FODMAP journey. :)
Wow it's so great to see this! I started low fodmap in 2016 and wasn't aware of these kinds of resources - it makes me happy that maybe people who are starting out can watch and feel that they are not alone / have useful tips! As someone who's been on it for some time I'll also share some thoughts! Some might be more applicable to the long term/modified diet instead of elimination phase. - not just take care of your physical but also mental health. Depends on the person of course, but be aware of what restricting your food does - and find ways to feel free with it (for example by having green options that you can eat as much as you feel like). If you mess up and get stomach ache, it's ok! Don't get down on yourself too much, you're trying and therefore helping all the other times! - I really really recommend the first tip. It's super overwhelming to start and having to think of meals while hungry. I had a sort of week planner /recommended meals from my nutritionist for the first week. - instead of thinking of restrictions / foods you CANNOT eat, think in terms of foods that you CAN. You will feel less down and missing foods, and it's easier to be creative with thinking of what meals to make. - for me it works best to have only one restricted food type per meal when I cook for myself. So I can just make sure to stay orange with that one and then only have green foods with it. Otherwise it becomes complicated and I make mistakes and cooking is less fun. - get Monash University fodmap app!!! Actually this should be tip number one haha. It will save your brain. - just good to be aware that soy and rice are quite complicated in terms of which products you can or cannot have. A short Google search helps clarify things - try to make your fodmap diet as close to your natural diet as possible. If you normally like snacking or less healthy foods as well, make sure you have some low fodmap alternatives. It's a medical diet, not one that is meant for losing weight. - for going out to eat, poke bowl places are great as they often let you choose what you want. There's also more and more pancake places with gluten or lactose free options. In general, maybe let go of the want to go out to eat for the six week elimination phase. After that, calling beforehand could help, and in general restaurants that don't have the meals prepared yet can usually be flexible. That said, some places are quite rude about it. Keep in mind that it's not your fault and laugh about it with your friends. - decide before going to a restaurant if you feel like keeping to the diet and to what extent. For example, these days I go gluten free and no garlic or union - but if there is a tiny bit or garlic or union in for example a sauce, I eat it. I get a little bit of symptoms sometimes, but not nearly as much if I would have let go all the way. And I'm still having a fun time without worrying too much if the restaurant has options for me or if I'm eating something I can't have. - don't be afraid to get creative and flavor sauces etc. Most basic flavorings are actually allowed, including soy sauce, vinegar, rice water, miso, soy bean paste, Sesame oil, all types of herbs and spices etc. In the end its cheaper and you get more variety than hanging onto the one sauce in the supermarket that didn't have garlic. - lastly yes it definitely gets much easier!! Once you're used to it, tbh when I'm cooking for myself I don't feel that restricted anymore. I go to the supermarket and pick up whatever I feel like eating. Yes, the first time I did groceries for fodmap I was in the store for two hours trying to read labels and looking everything up. But you really get used to it and these days I read labels automatically and know if I can have it from the top of my head. It doesn't take me extra time anymore to read the labels (except if I'm looking for something really specific that they don't have a lot of) I'm about to try and make millet milk, as a vegan alternative thats green fodmap. Let's see if it works! Good luck everyone, you got this!! Edit: also the tip about having a one-sentence explanation ready is so good I can't believe I've never thought of doing that. I'm definitely gonna use it!
Hi, I used to be strictly vegan for years, but found my digestive issues were still not being addressed. Finally, a dietician told me to do the FODMAP elimination diet and I am about to embark on a new food discovery journey! Thanks for your tips, I shall certainly be taking them on board as I start clearing my cupboards, researching and gathering so quick east go-to recipes. I already have a snack stash container system :)
Yes! So excited for you to get back to vegan 💚 I felt terrible when I first went vegan but I was just way over doing it with the FODMAPs. I hope this diet helps you as much as it has me xx
Just went LowFODMAP, (been vegan for a while), and I love your channel! I have been struggling to watch my fav youtubers "what I eat in a day" or recipes because a lot of it I can't have. Your channel has made it easier to see what other LowFODMAP vegans eat! It sucks to have stomach issues and try to explain to friends my problems, (which can be embarrassing), or there is just so much that its hard to explain. Im sorry you have to deal with this like others have to do as well unfortunately.. Hope you had a good 2017 and looking forward to 2018!
Amber Rose Thank you! Do you know, since doing this channel I’ve had to be way more open about having IBS and it’s taken away so much of the embarrassment. Most people say either they think they might have it or someone close to them does. And a lot of my friends (say) they have no recollection of me being a bit, erm gassy years ago 😅 clearly good at hiding it haha. Hope you have lots of luck with lowFODMAP and happy 2018 xx
I know this video was posted a year ago, but thank you! I’m starting a LowFod Map diet in a week or so, and I am terrified. It means a lot to have calming resources like yours
I’m in so much pain from a flare up - thank you for this. I really need to try this. I’ve been diagnosed 2 weeks ago after suffering with this for the last 3 years. I keep getting flare ups every 3/4 weeks. Wish me luck!
I would accept it to my son so I just say he spends way too much time in the bathroom. But if he's around then he goes into detail until they try to get him to stop
I have followed the diet and it helps so much! I’m so thankful for the good information that is available- once upon a time, one just continued to suffer or have high medical bills.
I’m now starting this and your video has helped me feel less afraid. I’m not vegan but I am celiac so I know how exactly how hard it is to navigate at this initial stage. Thanks.
Thank you! I have just been diagnosed with IBS and have been trying this low FODMAT diet for a week now. While some of the harshest symptoms have been alleviated a good bit, I am a long way from feeling well and normal. I spend most of my time exhausted on the laz-e-boy arm chair. Being a bachelor has made this especially hard as I have had to work this all out myself while I've been flat out sick. I've been getting disheartened, honestly, and this presentation has helped me galvinize my focus and determination onto getting on top of this. Yours is the first audiovisual presentation I have seen on this subject, and it helps a whole lot! Aside from the actual practical tips, just seeing a healthy looking, intelligent young woman talk about this helps in normalizing it. Thank you! P.S. I have been thinking of pretty well starving myself just to feel normal. The massively restrictive diet I am already on (Though I am only recently diagnosed, I have been cutting things like caffeine, sugar, meat, alcohol and also quitting smoking for over 6 months) has not yet gotten me feeling ok enough to function. Will pretty much starving work, if for only a day or three?
So glad my video has helped motivate you... Its just a restrictive diet! Especially when, like you said, you feel unwell. I'd encourage you to find some lo-fodmap recipes you enjoy (lots on my website/channel) and avoid starving yourself. If you are feeling some improvement already that's really really promising!! It should continue to improve 🤞xx
Thank you SO much for all of your videos. I’m a new vegan diagnosed with ibs and my doctor told me today to start the Fodmap diet. I was feeling so discouraged and down but after finding your videos I feel so prepared! 💪
I'm so glad I could help! It sounds like your dr could have been a bit more helpful but at least they've sent you in the right direction ☺️ Let me know if you ever have any questions and if you're on facebook come join the private group because everyone's so helpful on there! xx
Thankyou for these tips. I can so relate. Yes feeling overwhelmed ATM with choices, eating out, feeling left out etc, etc. as a newbie. Great tips. I’m following the fodmap Monash Uni app which is helping with choices. Red is Stop and Green for Go! I will do a diary
I’m so grateful RU-vid exists. It’s finding content like this that helps a ton! I’m trying to wrap my head around this before starting so will probably watch your entire playlist. Do you have a video where you tell your story?
I love your channel!!! You' ve give me hope. I 'm struggling with IBS for about 3 mounths and now i've decided that i want to be stronger than this health issue. Thank you!
came to this video after damn near killing myself with veggies :-P I added Shallots, Asparagus, cauliflower, and Brussel sprouts to my nightly fresh mix which already included shallots and copious amounts of Garlic. I had already suspected garlic was an issue but had no idea about the others. I was diagnosed with IBS years ago but never informed that there was a diet involved. The results of eating the above mix were not only stomach pains but a severe skin break out all over my body. In just a few days of following the fodmap protocol, my skin is nearly fully cleared up, and I haven't experienced any brain fog or stomach pain. Sure wish I knew about this stuff 30 years ago. Thanks for the info! SUBSCRIBED!
This is really calming thank you! I have an appointment with a dietician/nutritionist to get started with this in a couple of days and I was freaking out, but this helped a lot!
Thank you so much, I just got diagnosed with IBS and have to be on a low Fodmap diet, finding it pretty hard considering I have to give up a lot of foods I love
Oh my God I'm so happy I found your channel I literally have tears in my eyes! I can't wait to peruse your channel! Thank you so much!! Bell Noti's ALL THE WAY ON :D
I got diagnosed with SIBO. Now I take herbal antibiotics and I'm giving the FODMAP diet a shot. But in addition to that I am also not allowed to eat nuts, tomatoes and pineapple (since I am allergic to those). So atm I am Vegan, Glutenfree, Low-FODMAP, No nuts, No tomatoes, No Pineapples and low sugar... I don't even know what to eat anymore lol
Ah man, yeah that doesn't leave much! You're going to need a very creative dietician to help you 🙈 There are slower but less restrictive protocols for seeing which FODMAPs are your triggers so they will probably opt for that xx
I have ibs, and I am sick and not feeling well EVERYDAY. I’m so fed up with feeling bad and not being able to do most things. So I am trying to switch over to this new diet! It’s much harder to because I have about 6-10 food allergies, and pollen food allergy syndrome. So that makes the diet more limited. But I feel motivated to do it now.
I’m not a vegan but this was really helpful and you are very watchable. I’m a coeliac and I’m just going trying to prepare myself for a FODMAP diet, so I can hopefully pin point what makes me ill. I’m just so fed up with feeling poorly!
Thank you for these things to do before we start. I am getting ready to start the diet for my 12 year old son. Doctor's orders. We will be doing it for myself and my older son also since we have a lot of digestive issues as well. It is very overwhelming at this point so your ideas are very helpful. Thank you
Thank you. We will definitely need it. We are not used to eating very healthy overall. Lots of processed food so it will be an adventure. I appreciate it the suggestions of some specific things that make it easier like the onion or garlic infused oil. My added difficulty is that we live in an RV so I'm limited on Space to store things. Was Covetous over though we will just go to the store a little more often to get all the fresh things we need.
Thank you so much for this helpful and informative video!! I have horrible bloating and have been thinking about eating low FODMAP for a while but have been a little intimidated! So happy to have discovered you
Glad I could help. My IBS got way worse after going vegan (so much garlicy hummus! 🤦♀️ If you haven't it would be worth seeing a Dr first, but it wouldn't hurt to try a few lowFODMAP days to see if you feel any difference. I subbed your channel btw, really nicely put together videos 👌 x
You're so right! When I started the fodmap journey I was thinking that every single fodmap food was bad for me, so I eliminated them all and I felt absolutely like crap😞 we have to test everything on ourselves first
So true! And even though it’s restrictive at the beginning you end up with wayyy more foods you can confidently eat rather than cautiously guessing it’s all bad. I’m also learning to appreciate for me it’s not just a single meal but what I eat over several days adding up. How was your Christmas btw? ☺️ x
Carrie Gill Quite good thanks😊 I made gnocchi with potatoes and buckwheat flour and received a lot of useful gifts, I feel grateful for this Christmas😃 How went yours? 😊
I think tips about anything based on accounts of wrong choices made by similar people are very valuable in all kinds of life experiences not just IBS. Good tips here. Thank you very much!
Heres the list she gave: 1. Gather and try recipes 2. Start a food & Symptoms Diary 3. Go in with an open mind 4. Let go of the desire to eat out 5. Have a quick explanation ready 6. Get help from a medical professional 7. Don't worry, it gets easier 8. Stock up on tupperware 9. Stock up on lowFodmap store cupboard food 10. Check labels 11. Start lowfodmap stashes
Geez you are so beautiful!! You can tell the diet keeps your skin glowing and those eyes as bright as can be!! The accent is just the icing on the cake!!
You have beautiful blue eyes, btw. I am trying to stay vegan since Dec 1. I have made almost 30 new recipes since then and my husband and I have spent most of the month in the bathroom. He really can’t have that at his job! We only have about 5 we we liked well enough to repeat. I have been reading cookbooks nonstop. I can’t wait to get the one you recommended!
Definitely sushi is the best choice for me when I eat out. I'm not vegan so my other safe choice is bacon, eggs, and potatoes at a diner. I don't eat out much, though.
moldypotatochip I could never eat raw fish in sushi but I have tried both white& brown rice with avocado & mango with either shrimp or immation crab meat Basically California rolls
Wow thank you so much for this video! I just came back from my doctor who thinks I have IBS and gave me a list with all the things I can't eat during the diet... Oh dear. I've been eating basically everything on the no go list, and I'm trying to eat more vegan/vegetarian lately, which doesn't seem to be the easiest combination. My big question now is: where to start?! Your channel is a really great discovery for me, and you have such a calm and friendly vibe around you, it makes me a bit more confident that I'm gonna be able to do this :) So, thank you! I guess I've got a lot of video's to catch up to! :D
If you can have 1/3 banana and strawberries then you could make a small banana/strawberry smoothie, and keep the extra 2/3 banana in the freezer. First I freeze the bananas in 1/3 chunks, and I think frozen strawberries taste better than fresh strawberries. I usually add coconut milk, but any milk will do. I also add a tiny bit of vanilla. Also you could make banana bread with a whole banana, and then only eat 1/3 of the loaf. It goes really good with almond butter.
Thank you! Have a vegetarian guest who is on FODMAP (is that the right expression?) coming for a week in September-bit worried I won’t feed him properly. Feel a bit more confident now 👍
Happy New Year Carrie. Thanks for these fabulous tips, I wish I'd known all of this when I started. This is going to be a huge help for anyone just starting their low FODMAP journey.
So greatful to have found you! 😍 I have crohns disease which is a form of IBD and when I'm not having a flare up I suffer with IBS 😣 I went vegan to see if that would make my symptoms any better but like you I still felt like poop (😂). J just wanted to Thank you for these videos and I can't wait to keep binging on them over the next few days 😊 Also I hope you are feeling much better! 💚
Thank you, glad you found them! I hope you find them helpful 😘 And I do feel so much better these days, I was just thinking how my "normal" is actually symptom-free, which really wasn't the case before 😳 xx Btw, you're very welcome to join the private facebook group, everyone shares such useful advice and support in there ☺️ (facebook.com/groups/1649597611746021/)
Carrie Gill Oh Thank you for letting me know I'm not on Facebook at the minute but I will join and take a look. So glad you're feeling much better now 😊 Thanks again and i cant wait to see more ! 😁 xx
I am excited to start this diet, and I hope it makes me feel better! With a positive outlook and creativity, I can do this. There are so many options available in the stores if you have an open mind.
Glad I found your channel and this video. I suspect I have IBS and getting all the tests out of the way. Knowing all this ahead of time will be really useful if so. Dr told me basically to see if it's any specific food, so I guess a food diary is what she meant. I know I am sensitive to gluten (was GF previously but started eating again), can't have dairy, and many of the things upsetting me recently were high fructose. This diet seems like it would be really good for me.
I’m a year into vegan. At first my stomach was so happy from cutting out dairy but recently I’ve been starting to have really bad stomach problems again. Going to ask my gastroenterologist for more testing. Not sure if it’s sibo, ibs, garstroparesis, or something else
Me being 12 and having to start this diet is jest so difficult since I’m sort of over weight and I’ve been doing this for about a month now and doctors don’t know exactly what is happening to me with my stomach they think I have IBS and that’s what I tell people when they ask about my diet. But still really hard for me to stay with this diet 100% at all times sometimes like my birthday I had a break day but all in all this diet has helped me a little. And it’s true for the first week I felt not good on this diet but maybe even more than a month in it’s become sort of a routine.
Thank you so much for the the tips,I ve been diagnosed past 2 years, but recently I've been told to follow this diet by the dietitian Im still struggling but this vedio has helped a lot. Thanks again.❤
So glad I checked out your youTube video.Just got back from Mum and Dad's where there's nothing I can eat and it upsets them. Mum is just as sick as me but she refuses to see the diet link. Well she is 90 so be it.
another tip that helped was putting in a good solid day at the grocery store taking pictures of foods you can eat. I was surprised to find how many cereals I can eat plus... I found out eating shredded wheal makes me feel better!!! I found the off brand of frosted shredded wheat doesn't have the fodmaps and its a resistant starch so my microbiome is waaay happier now! =D my symptoms are now half and I can go weeks without symptoms and even can have trigger foods like coffee again in modest/reasonable amounts. woot! look up resistant starches like cold potatoes, cold rice, green bananas, plantains and whole wheat (not enriched!!! that has malt which can be a no no, plus no nutritional value) eat those and your gut bacteria and gut wall will thank you! I even made a mistake of eating too many risky foods last week and my symtoms were mildy annoying and only lasted one day when it typically would require me to go to the ER for antispasm injections followed by a week of pain so bad I couldn't wear clothes (tmi?) so.... moral of the story, eat resistant starch! it can change your life... plus prevent cancer and diabetes, woot!
Thank you for more info and advice. I think of this diet the same way as when I went vegan. It takes awhile, but looking at lables is a big help, but everyone's body is different. Peanut butter is allowed, but I have Gerd and it gives me reflux. I do better with almond butter.
I think that's a really good way to look at it. And in the same way, they're both dietary changes for very positive reasons so you know it's worth persevering when it's hard xx
I just started looking into low FODMAP yesterday very interesting I think I need this diet as I have very digestive issues especially with grains like lentils and beans and all those sort of foods
Man, that was really helpful. I'm about to plunge into the SIBO diet for the second time. I felt great on the first time, it but whoa...i got bored after 9 mos because I didn't have many go-to recipes as you have wisely suggested here.
I'm having an awful episode of IBS-C! I've been eating Keto for a couple of years and have been fine. It's the stress of this pandemic that is getting to me. There is just no way of getting around this stress. I'm just being kinder to myself and eating really well. Now I have to eliminate more food from my diet! I feel like crying, also.
