We have a new synth in our rotation! Icarus 2 by Tone2!
This thing is a monster of a synth! In this video we go over a few of the cool features and introduce it, in case you don't know about it.
Icarus 2 is one of those synths that is very deep but also easy to get the hang of. The filter selection is quite vast and there are lots of cool ones to choose from.
The glitch section is a very cool concept that we talk about as well.

Yeah so far it's crazy how deep icarus goes. I've been reading the manual since I got it, super cool synth. I haven't tried out the other ones yet. Would absolutely love to though.

So there is going to be a Icarus3. Looking over the specs on KVR something caught my eye - Under filters: 'Band-pass: Digital 12dB, Digital 24dB, Analog 12dB, Analog 24dB, Boobs.'

Definitely a very nice looking and sounding VST, Jon. Synth VST makers should ask UVI to license Falcon and build their user interfaces on top of that, I mean it becomes kind of pointless to reinvent the wheel again and again. But that is for another video (I might make) lol.

I feel Tone2 have always had a very saw heavy 80s analogue emulation sort of sound. I obviously know there are different oscillations and wave shapes, but I’m disappointed how 10 years on their voice engine sounds the exact same as Gladiator did 10 years ago. I don’t hear any reason to add their collection today into my U-he, Roland, Korg, Arturia or Xfer collection. Virtual synthesis and plug-in’s have come a real long way since 2010. Disappointed this sounds identical to that era’s Gladiator. I tell what Tone2 synth was a standout surprise, Firebird!! As made famous by Timbaland for two or three of his signature sounds in that era.

I havent tried firebird before, sounds very interesting! I think at the end of the day, synths have gotten so good to the point where it seems the UI carries a little more weight ya know? There's always exceptions for sure. Like you said, since 2010 soft synths have come a huuuuuuge way. It's pretty mind blowing!

Does this synth do anything unique, when considering Pigments, Serum and Hive as immediate competition and synths like Phaseplant and Harmor also in orbit?

It has lots of different synthesis methods (even additive via the wavetable editor), drum sequencer, vocoder, glitch section, resynthesis, proprietary filters, wavetable editor. There is definitely some overlap from the synths you mentioned for sure. I'd say icarus could be a good addition to those as well. I do have lots of synths but I still like using different ones because even though there is overlap lots of times, sometimes using something different can spawn creativity and make patches that you otherwise wouldn't have. There's some stuff I've done in vcv rack that I never would have thought to do in other synths ya know?

I did save the homepage of tone2 but never really looked into those, not the cheapest synths. Looks powerful but not sure if that is actually the sound I am looking for...

Out the gate it reminds me of VPS avenger because of the rad drum sequencer(which I LOVE!) . But then that Glitch sequencer reminds me of Thorns..so yeah. Fuck hive. I want this one instead 😊

They're different. I own Phaseplant, which is my GoTo when making custom patches. This seems to have more sound generators and a crazy amount of filters (plus arpeggiator and drums). But it's not flexible or modular like Phaseplant so there's a lot of room for serendipitous magical discoveries. To me, this is more of a Pigments killer (which I kinda felt HIve 2 was before I met this beast) which I've always used along side Phaseplant for years before I started getting the bad case of the softsynth GAS

@@buckycore yeah phaseplant is a beast ,I still have so much to learn I didn't get the multi pass with it as I didn't have the money, do you use multi pass much? Yeah the sequencer on iccarus looks pretty cool and I like the fact it has a lot of filter types

Okay but too complicated to program sounds, too many options, users want better sounds and easy to program with AI, this synthesizer has no A.I.

I suppose complicated is a matter of perspective. I didn't find this one to be complicated. As far as AI goes, that's a personal preference, I haven't felt the need that I need ai in any synth to get the sound im looking for
