Jem Stansfield launches his ice boat in a mission to sail across the Solent estuary before the boat melts. The material used to make the boat is Pykrete - a combination of frozen water and wood pulp or hemp. Although the material holds firm in the water, the boat gets into trouble and starts to sink, forcing the presenters to bail out!

I wonder how many people actually think this was a real experiment? Its obvious to me they did not take the time to understand how pykrete works, they did not truly examine the original works or they would have A) got the mix right.....which they clearly didn't as you can visibly see the areas that are pretty much just ice......and B) the designs were for a FAR larger ship that would have cooling pipes running through it(similar to how an Indoor Ice Rink has) to keep the thing from melting..... Believe it or not, but they DID actually create a Scale Model of the Inventors Idea that WORKED.......and actually Proved the Design was possible.......

They made an enormous mistake of mounting the motor in this way. Also, they are using the motor as a rudder and he is pushing the rudder too far over. you cannot push a rudder to far over as you will not produce forward momentum. the problems were with engineering AND sailing (clueless). not the pykrete.

No, I mean, it's not a Pyke boat as Pyke proposed. By changing the plans, it's designed to fail. Not science. No theory was tested. RP Feynman calls this "CARGO CULT SCIENCE;" where the people involved don't exhibit bend-over-backwards honesty. To fix it, either honestly state over and over that this boat is designed to fail, and doesn't much resemble Pyke's proposed boat ...or do it right (expensive) by actually making an enormous Pyke-crete iceberg that survives weeks of summer heat.
