Still in Juneau Alaska we head out to Mendenhall Glacier or Aak'wtaaksit, to the native Tlingit people which translates to the Glacier Behind the Little Lake. We spend an entire day exploring and ice climbing with some new friends. After getting to know the glacier we head back out for one last adventure into the the ice before boarding the ferry to our next destination.

You two are probably my favorite people to watch on RU-vid. Your ability to share your story and capture the emotion is truly beautiful. Not to mention your photography and film quality are striking. As a 9-5 worker, weekend warrior adventuring in the NE states, it fills me with joy to see the diversity in landscape you get to explore. I know you're cherishing it; thank you for sharing.

I'm glad our love and appreciation for these places are coming through in the finished product. It isn't lost on us how lucky we are to do this (even with all the work it takes to keep this show on the road, both literally and figuratively). So the best way we know to show that appreciation for it is to return the favor and get other people to fall in love with these places too.

So, to me the most amazing part of all the vids, series, gram posts, etc. that y'all do is just you and your husband. I used to smile and laugh in every episode of yours. I still do, but I cry now, too, and it's not an unwelcome change. As others have said, your storytelling is above most people's (certainly everyone in your genre) and getting better and better every time. I think your production level has already been top-notch for a long time, with a dynamic mix of cinematography and personality that really works. You're my favorite filmmakers on RU-vid, for sure. I vacillate between wanting to binge every episode one after another and the desire to stretch out my discovery of your content for as long as I can. Thank you for being such an inspirational example, and with any luck, we'll meet down the road.

For the first time I saw you on TV, your films are being played on one travel channel. I somehow immediately got into the unhurried rhythm, a good picture and a voiceover narration. Great animation ! Thank you very much for your creativity, you motivate, success in the future! It was very sensitive about the feelings inside the glacier 🙏

I appreciate that. I think you've picked up on what our long term goals are. We feel like we make these videos and they end up on RU-vid just because they have no other place to go... which is a strange way of saying that we don't make it necessarily for this platform but because we're flexing some creative muscles in preparation for some "bigger projects". Being that this is just one episode from a larger series, I don't know how well suited it is for a film festival, but I will look into it ;)

Nicely done. I too love the Mendenhall Glacier, as my wife did also. It's different every time I see it and I've seen it many, many, many times over the years. In fact, 8 years ago I spread my wife's ashes on the shores of Mendenhall Lake, where she used to cross country ski with our little Siberian Husky in the winter. 30 years ago when we moved here, I thought I'd said a "fond" farewell to snakes of all varieties, but was sadly mistaken. That happened when I discovered the dreaded Alaska snow snake, up on the Juneau Ice Field. The snow snake is white and blends completely in with the snow and ice.......it has a natural antifreeze in it's blood to keep it from freezing in our winter temperatures. They attack people in a unique way. You'll be walking along in the snow or ice and not see them laying in wait for you.............then when you get close.......they slither up yer pantleg and freeze yer ASS off!! lol

I think that is what is important about travel. We learn to care for things that are otherwise untangle and too distant to wrap our mind around. It just takes one big experience to change the way you think about how you fit into the world. That leads to small changes that add up over time, and at this juncture the world and our environment just needs people to see the connection we have to it.

I am finally catching up on this series. your cinematography is stunning. I can relate to your feelings regarding the glacier. Just before COVID shut down world travel, I got to explore Mer de Glace (lake at the glacier) on the North Slope of Mont Blanc. Seeing the markers of just how far the glacier is retreating every year was just shocking. Even if I go back in a few years, the view will be totally different and many more sections will have to be added to the walkway that is attached to the side of canyon to provide access. It's deeply profound to see climate chance in action... up close and so personally. Please keep sharing your amazing travels.

Nice. A different, very changed world. In May 1979, 2 buddies and I spend a couple of weeks on the Llewellyn Glacier system with XC skis and pulks starting from northern BC (dropped by helicopter at Atlin Lake). Climbed a few smaller peaks. At the end, we came down Mendenhall with very few serious ups and downs (boy has that changed!). Then walked out the trail, pulks on our backs, to get a ride into Juneau. A great trip. Back in the day - no communication. Deal was for a helicopter to fly over in 2 weeks to see how we were doing :-) if they could find us. We took 3 weeks of food & fuel (concerned about getting out in 2+ weeks) and two 3-person tents as we worried one might be shredded in high winds. Had 3-4 days of complete whiteout and couldn't travel much. Super trip!!

Glaciers are awesome. When you think about they used to reach to southern Illinois at one time and the water in the great lakes came from glaciers it is wonderful. The last mini ice age was during the war for Independence, Washington had a frozen Delaware river to cross and there was a couple years with little to no summer. That was the last time the glaciers really built more ice. When Canada was last covered in ice the North sea between England and Europe was dry land. The glaciers have had a major and magical control of the earth multiple times covering much of it in ice melting and then covering it in ice again. The power of water and ice is magical and scary.

We love your videos and we really appreciate you sharing your raw emotions of how the receding glaciers affect you. My wife and I have been on a journey of trying to learn how to reduce our impact and reduce our contribution to climate change. One of the big ones is going vegan, since animal agriculture contributes greatly to both to emissions and forest loss (not to mention suffering). We hope that nature continues to teach you as it continues to teach us.

That look/feeling you had coming out of the ice cave is what I feel like in giant stands of old growth. It's very difficult to explain and if you do have to explain it to others it's probably pointless. I've not been to Alaska yet but have a pack rafting trip planned in the Brooke's Range in August of '23. I'm not even there yet and am planning a return. I watch a lot of similar content and this was exceptional footage!!! There's only so much you can do with a bus trip through Denali, but you can be VERY proud of this one!!!

Love that you are still shooting with a 35mm film camera. Being a bit of a study of what makes for good photographic composition via one of my many careers the difference between film and digital just doesn’t compare. The skill required to capture images on a very limited number of frames on film vs the “just press the button, capture 100 frames and we’ll fix it later in editing” is lost on most. Every video is a slice of your souls being shared with the world. Thank you.

Amazing work. I live in Juneau and I worked for AMHS in Juneau. It’s nice to see visitors using the marine highway and spending quality time in town versus the few hours most cruise ship visitors are only fortunate to get.

Very powerful episode. Amazing to see the glacier and its beauty. So sad it’s slowly withering away. The section where you showed the markers really moved me.

Yeah it was a pretty touch two days out there on the glacier and to so plainly see how fast things are disappearing. As sad as it is, we are thankful for the knowledge which is why we wanted to share it

That cave that you went in, about 5 months after that opened up and tiny hole that you could crawl through, and the ice was crystal clear. i found some pretty cool things. i hike the Mendenhall every winter about 20 times. it's amazing. i'm glad you were able to experience it. be careful coming back because you won't want to leave. i've been here all my life, never going to leave. i'm happy you enjoyed our home on this beautiful peace of land❤️

A place to feed your soul...where you feel the presence of ancestors...not my ancestors...not your ancestors...but...our ancestors...and you show me Haines...where I grew up...that pic of Haines taken from Rapinski...or...Gei San by the local indigenous people...many stories surround Haines (Deishu) Day-shoo...I'm so grateful to be seeing the lands of my grandfathers...

Oh wow, that is so special to hear that we can take you home for a little while next week. When in places that feed your soul like that, it makes us as humans make more sense to me in context to nature. I will carry this place with me for as long as I live
