Ice Road Res-Q Tow... The Calm Between the Storms Sorta'

Removing a car from an ice covered county back road so the Highway Department could clear the snow and ice from the roads. The car got stuck between two icy hills and couldn't make go forwards or backwards. The driver left it there and the Sheriff's department had us move it so the roads could be plowed and salted. This wasn't all that interesting of a job, but after many hours of working these storms, even a simple job such as this can become dangerous. These conditions wear on your body, mind, and emotions after a period of time. Fatigue and complacency can get you hurt, or worse. NO INJURIES!!! Please SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

I think that's just one of those habits like wiggling the gearshift again before letting off the clutch when idling with a manual transmission. Tiny effort to avoid an at least embarrassing and potentially serious mistake.

The stress alone having to be on your p's and q's the whole time dealing with the ice. I've mention it before snow and ice I avoid at all cost. I make sure I have sufficient supplies before the weather upsets and stay clear of driving until Mr. Sun melts the snow. My prayers go out to you and your crew at MidWest. All of Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas has had a brutal February. If I think about past winters I usually have our coldest temps in February and end up with frozen pipes in my kitchen for about 18-20 hours.

Scott, I was pleased to see how carefully you eased down that icy hill. I was born and brought up in New England. It’s always the down side of the hill that gets you when it’s slippery. So many people think because they have 4wheel drive and antilock brakes that they don’t have to be careful. Wrong! There are places you just don’t even want to try going down if it hasn’t been salted or sanded.

You learn it. Back in the day I use to drive a coach, and I was new to a certain route, and made a wrong turn. It was 2am, dark, and the road kept getting more and more narrow until it ended in a culdusac, and a small one at that. There was no way to turn around a 45ft coach, not even using any driveways. And the road was long, no intersections. So I had to back up for 2 miles without seeing directly behind me. Had to stop a lot anytime I saw some shadow in the road that I couldnt identify. At least it wasnt during the day when a kid could jump out after a ball or toy... Yeah, some passengers freaked out, but nothing bad came of it. I was 21 back then. It was an exciting job though, every day was different, and I met nice people, back when that was still a thing.

Rotators and rollback are a thing of beauty, these 2 inventions made recovering vehicles so much easier. Not to mention the millions of jobs a rotator opened up for their owners. Essentially providing a mobile crane in a compact package to an industry that needed to evolve as the trucks and trailers evolved. And that is why these 2 trucks (but mostly rotators) are so cool to me. (Also not to mention rotators just look so mean)

Live in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth Metroplex and I remember that pike up so well. It happened on the Express Lane heading north on I-35 right next to downtown Ft. Worth. That express lane should never have been opened that morning. The expressway had not been worked by crews, it was completely iced over, and most of the cars and semis crashed into the pike up as they topped a rise, many of them going way too fast for the conditions and when they had to suddenly stop it was way too late and they piled in. I want to say there were 70 or so vehicles and at least nine people were killed. Many lessons to learn that day. State and city officials took hell over this one. You’re right, Ron, an awful tragedy!

Great video Ron!👍👍 Enjoying it with my morning tea and sausage, egg & cheese bisket. When I was driving OTR, I keep a full set of chains in the truck from Sept. thru March. More or less just to comply with the chain laws, if I need to chain up, it's to hazardous to drive. But sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do! I thought the message notification on your phone was the plush Mater on the dash but then I always wondered why I could hear him outside the trucks. Not as straightforward as it looks. Why? Because of the treacherous conditions! Another well executed recovery safely completed. You're right, the pictures I saw here in the UK of the Texas pile-up didn't look good. The only 'good' thing about it was the amount of work available to the recovery teams, but the cost of lives will always leave a bad taste and feelings of great sadness, methinks. May God rest the souls of the deceased and bless the workers and families involved. God bless you, Ron.

I would imagine that the shoulder of the road would have provided the traction needed to carry the car over the next hill. Even with an ice storm, the non-paved ground would have more "give" to it (as in the case of the semi-truck rescue video 4 days ago).

Ron, You should ask the PD's/FD's/Customers if there's a "what3words" location for the incident, what3words has divided the world into 3m squares, it's a precise location that has a unique name for every square. As an example, the location of this job I believe is in "///endpoints.tweeted.liberty", and your shop is located across various squares, with your rotator parked at "///deprive.fragile.central". Hope this helps. Stay Safe and God Bless from God's Own Country - Wales.

Got kinda a funny story for you, I was called to assist the county on an accident, the road had a hill on it that had another road deadended into it, on the main road at this intersection there was a hill, driving a normal speed no problem, but if going a higher speed the car could go airborne, a lot of kids would purposely go that higher speed to go airborne, one night a sixteen year old kid jumped the hill, his car ended up flipping and landed on its roof spinning down the road, the measurement we took was from the landing of the car to its resting point was just over 150 feet, it had a sunroof it which shattered on impact giving us the starting point, the kid flipped over inside the car with his butt hanging out of the sunroof, when the medics got there we got the kid out and once in the ambulance being evaluated he had some severe road rash on his butt, it even ate through his jeans, his dad showed up on scene and asked his son what happened and he made up a story why he had a wreck, when dad talked to us he got really mad at his son, dad told him when his "butt" (dad said another word for this) he was going to beat his "butt" again, the ambulance transported him to the ER so the could clean the wounds, he was not driving impaired just under the influence of stupidity, he did get a ticket for failure to control and dad grounded him by taking away his driver's license for six months making him ride the bus to school everyday, when his friends found out about his injury the taunted him mercilessly, dad did say after that the kid did learn his lesson, the deputy said when he went to court for the ticket the judge even laughed at his injury

Even a set of 4 studless snow tires, with good rubber compounding, might have given that BMW the edge it needed. I bet it had only all-season tires on it. Its amazing what a decent tire will do, in marginal conditions. But I understand that in Missouri, one hardly expects New England weather.

Here in the UK, more driver's are having standard "Mud and Snow" tyres fitted seasonally, they store them at a local tyre shop, they are a fantastic help, even though we may only get a few weeks maximum where they are needed. I have both wheels and tyres, and run them October to March. I've worked in Sweden, and Germany, to name a few, where they are legally required, you can use studded tyres in certain conditions, ref heavy show. But you're spot on, they would be a great investment for the North and Central USA driving. Regards John.

Bless you for letting us know at 16:06. The voice has bugged me for years. Reminded me of a crazy used to CB broadcast in the Everret stretch of I-5 in Wa. pleading: "Are you out there? Billy Bob, are you out there?" over and over, pumping out at about 10 watts swamping the channel. FCC could not find them. On the lighter side, well and carefully done.

I think you were looking at the ratty bottom part of the body. I suspect that was dried salt that collected since the last wash and wax.

That road looks bad. You are a good backwards driver 😄.
