In this video, Lloyd explains how to do a forward outside 3 turn on ice.
The forward outside 3 turn is a key fundamental move on the ice. It can be quite challenging at first, so don't be disappointed if you don't master it straight away.

I've been attending ice skating classes and had learn less that what you just taught us here. Simple technicalities make all the difference. Some "coaches " can show you but can't teach the actual technique (or is it that they don't really want you to learn it right? Still does not make sense!) . I am learning a ton from this channel and I encourage you to upload as much as you can, to help forming new ice skaters the right and unharmful way. 👏🏆

Thank you for your kind words. We try our best to help people understand exactly what they should be trying to do when learning each move. If there is anything in our videos that people don't fully understand, if they let us know we will happily find another way to explain it to them. In our eyes, the the goal of a coach is to find a way to make the student understand what they are trying to do and how to acheive it. Feel free to go to our community area if you want to follow what we're up to and vote on future releases.

I have also wondered about the sincerity of coaches during ice class. It also sometime seems to me that they are not teaching as effectively as they can, like they are holding back on you. One thought that occurred to me is that they are using class just as a teaser to get you in to lucrative private lessons. Of course it could just be that, like in many things, excellent coaches are rare.

@@TheLarryBrown yes, You said it rigth: " like they are holding back" something, is exactly my feeling. I think that is very selfish of them.

Just found these great tutorials. Damn, I wish the ice arena would re-open. Dying to practice these. Being a senior and not skating regularly causes a great deal more muscle memory loss than for younger people. I'm guilty of so many errors demonstrated here.

@@IceCoachOnline Thanks for the reply! Still struggling to keep my hip and shoulder against the rotation after the turn :(. Any tips or exercise that would help my hip from turning please?
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 года назад
@@kinchang987 are you making sure to turn your entire torso block the rotation? Sometimes people think they are, but in reality they are just moving their arms and not moving the torso as well. Also, make sure to keep your free leg controlled. If your free leg swings out uncontrollably, you'll really struggle to check the rotation.
@kinchang987
@kinchang987 4 года назад
@@IceCoachOnline Thank you so much for the replies :) Yes it is most likely problem with my torso. I can't help but close my hip uncontrollably after the turn, which causes me to fall into the circle (free leg touches ice). I've been struggling with the checking after three turns for months so any exercise/tips for strengthing that hip/torso/shoulder check position after the turn will be highly appreciated! 🤗
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 года назад
@@kinchang987 how stable are holding a backward inside edge on a circle ? If you struggle to hold that comfortably, then you will struggle to hold it after a 3 turn. If you feel comfortable on your backward inside edge without the 3 turn, you might find it easier to control the turn if you bring your free foot toe to touch your skating foot heel during 3 turn (as opposed to bringing your instep to the heel). Let me know if this made sense 😅 If not, I can try to explain it better!

The information on the checking motion and keeping shoulder and hip open is very helpful. I'm currently having trouble controlling my turns in general and it's probably because i'm not checking correctly or not checking at all. Thanks for this information! Great tutorials.

@@IceCoachOnline I've tried it and I'm struggling a bit with the arm position. I've gotten used to doing the arms like in chasses but will keep working on it! Noticed though that I'm not gliding as fast after the turn. Does that mean I'm going too much on my toe or the entry needs to be faster?
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 года назад
@@heidemallett9676 are you struggling to move the arms into the position before you turn? Or struggling to hit the correct position after the turn? If you are starting the 3 turn from standstill using just one push into it, even batching the toe just a little bit will stop the speed very fast. I would hasard a guess you are a little too far forward perhaps with the hips back. Make sure your hips are underneath you and you are not too stiff in the skating knee. If you have a video of the 3 turn, upload it to RU-vid and drop the link below in a reply. I'll take a look and let you know what the exact problem is.

My coach is having me use the opposite arm in front. Now, I am thoroughly confused on which arm is actually suppose to be in front for stepping into the the turn.

Thank you! I was able to do the outside 3 turn with the help of your video (still a bit sloppy with the open sholder, I tend to deviate on my weaker leg). But, for inside 3 turn, I am completely stuck. Can you cover that as well? I am not even sure how to practice it...
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 года назад
We’re thrilled to hear you managed to do an outside 3 turn with the advice from this video. We are preparing a video for an inside 3 turn, it will be uploaded in the future. To practice it, you can do it on the semi circle like the outside 3 turn. For the right leg start with the left arm in front, right arm to the side. Rotate to face the centre of the circle before the turn, then use the same movement as the outside 3 turn to make the turn happen. All this will be covered in a video we are preparing! Hope this helps :)

Do you have tips on how to remain on a straight line after the 3 turn (entry into flip)? My left outside 3 turn curves in way too much and ends up bringing me in a circle ):

What does it mean to "check"?
@TheLarryBrown
@TheLarryBrown Год назад
At 3:25 he uses the term "check." It means to "arrest your circular motion in a precise way, at the intended limit." So in this case you are doing a half turn of the lower body, while the upper body does not turn. So you practice with a goal of getting that lower body to do the half turn precisely and then stop turning right at the half way mark.
