Nothing about ice spice gives y2k at all.. she gives modern day IG BADDIE WOW this video title read my mind

Unpopular opinion...I'm kinda tired of the Y2K nostalgia, it was pretty cute back in 2021-2022 but it kinda got oversaturated.

No cause lately, Ice Spice has been acting above everyone lately, like how she stole Central Cee from his gf and how she bashed Nicki. I don’t know HOW she isn’t cancelled yet, and her music is sooooo mid. I miss 2023 Spice when she had that down to earth vibe but now she acts untouchable and all her vids are about shaking her cake 😭

While her aesthetics aren't awful, I feel like they're very derivative and plain, especially now that there are other artists who also draw from the Y2K era while doing way more interesting things with it, like PinkPantheress or even JT's OKAY music video. I also feel like her use of the aesthetic isn't telling us anything, it feels very shoehorned in and not organic if it makes sense?

Different Types of Y2K Aesthetics (From My Knowledge as a 90s and Early 2000s loving Gen Z’er) Futurism Y2K: think like TLC’s No Scrubs, Aaliyah’s We Need a Resolution, Incubus’ Pardon Me or it’s album “Make Yourself” etc. McBling “Trashy” Y2K: What Ice Spice is mostly close to doing and it fits her ironically Dark Y2K: Think of Nu-Metal bands like Korn, Deftones, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Evanescence, or Emo bands like MCR or 30 Seconds to Mars. Webcore: Windows 95, 98, XP. Tell me other types of aesthetics missing or any corrections.

Icespice should have not dropped an album. She's a singles artist. She needs to just release hit songs only. Thats how her career should progress.

She’s clearly going for the trashy Y2K vibe not the futuristic aesthetic from the music videos and artists you mentioned. Those were two separate aesthetics of Y2K

I think Ice’d vibe is very cool girl - like “Mean girls” would’ve been a better vibe for her to lean into, but it has been done by other’s already. With that said, I wouldn’t expect her to be able to obtain the maximalists effort of true Y2K bc she would have to seem like she’s trying. Which is a big no no for Gen Z popular girl. It’s more so giving MySpace, Razor, Paris Hilton vibe, which is the consumerism aspect of Y2K you referred to

I know this is an unpopular opinion but recycling y2k and 90s things is what is stagnating music. When ppl look back this era wouldn't have anything that was groundbreaking.

i think people underestimate/dont get how much japanese culture and aesthetics impacted the artistic direction of a lot of these y2k artists visuals. when japanese street style & black/hiphop culture meet something truly special is made. & no one is capturing that because none of them seek inspiration from anything they didnt see on tv as a kid which was already probably heavily inspired by something else

The issue is there’s a HUGE group of people (especially corporations) that compares the y2k aesthetic more to the fashion/style of 2010s. Y2K is a heavy blend of the end of the 90s with a mix of futuristic digitized graphics. Almost poster board like, but not cyberpunk. Does that make sense ? What they think of being y2k is basically jersey shore and MySpace, but that’s not really what it is.

I collect vintage tech & I found it unusual how they try to pass off a CRT TV as a vintage PC MONITOR. I was just so confuse because I was wondering why is PC Microsoft home page graphics on a TV? Than the graphics received a FaceTime call?? It’s not a computer it’s a TV. But I doubt anyone would caught that. Let’s just say the aesthetic is futuristic.

Rt, I think panthress pulls it off alot better. I agree, it's poorly executed, when I know Ice could also pull it off if she wasn't so tied to the sexualized aspects of what she's bringing to the table. She started that way and now whatever management she's with is kinda just playing it up because they figure it'll work over and over. When you're lyrics are weak though, people will notice alot faster how little you contribute. She isn't dead yet, but this route isn't it either.

I'm just an old lady from the Caribbean who was 30 at the turn of the century.... Hence, it should not surprise that I find the rise of Ice Spice to be quite odd. I'm here out of morbid curiosity!

Ice got her fashion inspo from her mother when she was young. She said that. Also, Y2K while it is an era, the year 2000, is still her birth year. Its probably a play on words, not a full fledged aesthetic shes leaning into. That said, Y2K as a trend is on its way out anyways. 2010s is coming back with stuff like office siren, which is just 2024s version of the business casual trend. Since the year 2000 is her birth year, i think using the name is cute enough, and I’m not expecting a full era aesthetic lean in from her first ever album rollout when people who have been around forever barely even get good rollouts these days. I’m interested to see what she does sonically throughout the album.

this is the thing about past aesthetics or styles there will always be people who never experienced it that desperately want to use the aesthetic/style but don't want to put in the homework and learn where it came from, why and how to use it properly kind of like how goth was appropriated and ruined by people desperately wanting to take it for themselves without knowing anything about it.

I mean i get it kinda. We have seen artists do similar things with 80s revival and 90s revival. Usually the revival is kind of a romanticized version of the era. But even with that said i dont think she is even giving a very good romanticized version of Y2K

As someone who went through the Y2K eras as a child in middle school, she is not giving what she thinks she’s giving. Personally, it feels like the only people think this is why 2K are the people who did not actually live through Y2K. And that’s fine…but just know that it’s not lol. To be fair, the late 2010's 80s Nostalgia aesthetic was also a weird exaggeration of what the 1980s were actually like. 2020s Y2K is much pinker and less chrome than the actually early 2000s aethetics.

One thing that’s so interesting to me is the Nicki Minaj comments. While I do think in Ice Spice’s case it may be more so copying then influence. With other artists, they’re pushed so hard to say that Nicki Minaj is there favorite female rapper, how much she influenced them and to bow down to her, but then when those influences are actually shown in the music and visuals, then it’s “OMG she’s copying Nicki.”
