We moved to 12 volt refrigeration for camping a few years ago. Not worrying about running out of ice or your food sitting in ice water is super nice. It’s also good as a backup refrigerator/ freezer. Our neighbor’s refrigerator went on the fritz and they were able to save at least some of their food using our 12 volt unit. Larger 12 volt refrigerators need wheels or it will be too heavy to transport once full
@Jasonoid

I'm glad you were able to help out your neighbor :) I'd say anything bigger than this one you'd need wheels, this one isn't too heavy, it's the size that makes it awkward to move it around by yourself though. Hitting door frames and such haha

Very nice; makes me wish I were in the market for another compressor-cooler. Two of my four are in use, and we want to cut one of them down a lot so we have it for emergencies. One 54L keeps my stock of nuts at 45F so they don't get rancid, and the other 54L is a backup freezer which has some food in it but is also used to freeze flour to kill bugs and their eggs before we store it elsewhere. Other than the use for flour, that's the one I'd like to stop using, so we have its space for emergencies. My two small ones, 37L and 15L, are idle right now.

Anticipate using this as a single zone most of the time, but nice to have the option. I know other dual zone fridge's can have two fridge sections, however, this is very nice since you can remove the divider and not lose space when doing so. My question is, would you not use the baskets anymore because they are designed with the divider in mind and would move too much with the divider gone? Would be nice if they offered a larger basket for non-divider use if that is the case. Just something I have noticed after watching a few of these videos.

Great video and equally great review. I look forward to watching your other reviews. 2 comments and a couple of quick questions before I head over to Iceco's site: Have you considered going higher for your ambient temp efficiency tests, for those of us headed out to the desert? External dimensions would have been a help. I am new to the community, converting a minivan to an rv, and would appreciate knowing if this would sit beside me in place of the passenger seat. Can either side be set to freezer zone? Do you know if Iceco makes a shallow basket, to hold drinks while you are driving, for instance? Finally, do you have a sense of how efficiently the unit runs with the lid closed, but not latched? (Likewise, for that driving down the road, wanting easy access to drinks or snacks? Thank you, again, for a great review.

Hey Don, lot's of questions to answer, I'll try my best to get at most of them: -Testing at 85-90F is as high as that electric heater goes, I can't go any higher for my inside testing. It's winter where I am right now so I couldn't complete any hot outdoor testing either. I live in Utah (high desert) and I use these fridges in temps above 100F all the time, they are designed to work in temps up to 130F. Just keep the compressor vents unblocked so the air can flow. -External dimensions are on their website, along with many other great specifications you may need to know. -I tend to use the smaller zone as the freezer and that's how I was testing it in the video. I believe either zone can be set to whatever temp you desire. -I don't think they make a shallow basket specifically, but if you have the basket installed, it keeps things on the shelf from falling off. -During all of my testing I never had the lid latched. The lid is heavy enough to seal off the fridge without the latches.

I just got one and ran it for a few hours on my Ecoflow River 2 Pro. Freezer side set to 0 degrees the fridge side set to 35 degrees. The freezer side only got down to 35 degrees and the fridge side never changed from 68 degrees ambient temp. I assume this has to do with shipping and maybe the fridge sat upside down for quite a while. The fridge is now off and I am letting it sit for a day or so to see if I can get some better results. Hopefully this time will allow the compressor to lubricate properly and resettle.

@Jasonoid Год назад
The EB3A is a pretty small battery so you won't get that long of runtime if it's hot outside. Were you able to see it charging off your car battery while driving?

Will it automatically switch to 12V when 120VAC is not available if both are hooked up like my old VL60D?

Yes, it has priority with AC power, DC will be the backup.

Is it a list of 12v refrigerators that use the BD50F . I’m trying to decide on a purchase for emergencies and I don’t know where to start, so I guess I’ll start with the BD50F Compressor
@Jasonoid

The BD35F is also a great Secop compressor, it's slightly smaller and for smaller fridges. If you look on my comparison sheet online it shows all the compressor models for every model I have reviewed.

a question about the display. does the temp readout in normal constant mode display the set point or the actual internal temp ... in other words does one have to have and additional thermometer to know the actual operational internal temp. I've noticed in my 12v fridge the temp will vary quite a but from place to place inside the fridge. Probably due to inadequate insulation. By the way I am assuming the "usb inputs" statement was just a little mind glitch.
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid Год назад
The display shows the actual inside temp, unless you push the settings button to change it, then it shows the set point temp. Some fridges are more accurate than others and this one seems to do really well. I think it's always good to have an inside thermometer just in case the fridge isn't very accurate. Then you won't have your food freeze or spoil. Regarding the "usb inputs" mistake... lots of people have commented about it LOL... Basically after recording that one section of video 15 times over and over I finally decided that it was what it was. There's so much that goes into making these videos (especially since I'm not reading a script) and sometimes you just leave a little mistake in the video because it's 2AM and you're done trying to make it better. But hey, at least I got the other 3000 words in the video correct LOL
@eandm8982
@eandm8982 Год назад
@@Jasonoid thanks for the reply. that is how i would expect the display to function but in my experience it hasn't always been the case. A couple of thoughts re the baskets in my lesser quality fridge without hanging baskets any produce or product that touches the sides can get frozen by the cooling coils during the cooling cycle(even in a fridge set to ~40'f, well above freezing). a basket would prevent the touching of the extra cold side? Another advantage i think baskets might provide is improved air circulation. In my rather poorly insulated fridge i've noticed large variations of temperatures depending on how the fridge is loaded and where i place the monitoring thermometer. Sometimes temps vary 10'f or more and is majorly influenced by ambient conditions.. Any incidental direct sun exposure is a problem. air circulation would probably mitigate this somewhat. really do appreciate all the time you put into your testing and reviews.
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid Год назад
@@eandm8982 those are some great thoughts about the baskets, I bet they do help in the ways you mentioned. If a fridge had built in air circulation via ducting or a small fan system, that would be pretty cool. Probably would make it too complicated, the baskets do a good job.

Can it work as a single zone freezer at 0 F? And at what sort of power consumption in room temperature?
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid Год назад
Having it set at 0f as a single zone is possible. Running at room temperature wouldn't add much power at all. I'd guess somewhere around 23-26 watts on average. Very low power draw!

You would have to have a very tall vehicle for that lid open all the way up.

Yeah, good point! It's designed for a truck bed or fridge slide that pulls out. If it was in used in a cabin or tent the tall lid wouldnt matter either.

It seems to prefer AC power as a priority, so if AC power is lost if should swap over to DC input automatically.

Depends on where you go camping or how you use the fridge. We go camping 1 to 2 hours from a store so getting ice is a pretty long trip and uses a bunch of gas. If you go camping near civilization, crowds, and traffic, doing an ice isn't a problem.

Yeah the black stainless doesn't do it for me. I'll be honest I'd either use it as a fridge or a freezer. Not as a dual zone. If I'm needing a dual zone...I'm going BIG. I'm surprised you haven't had Iceco send you a big dual zone to test. Power efficiency really doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Efficiency doesn't do you much good if it can't keep up with the ambient.

@@Jasonoid Exactly. And ice isn't always available when and where you need it. In new jersey at the shore in summer, good luck. You will end up buying tiny bags of ice from a small liquor store for a small fortune per bag. I purchased an older Engel from retired man for 20 dollars. It runs like a top non-stop for 2 years but isn't efficient enough so I'm upgrading.
