This is the ULTIMATE Iceland road trip! We drive Iceland's Ring Road in one week and see it all including the Westfjords and the Icelandic Highlands!
In this episode of Mapping It we drive around Iceland’s Ring Road! We only have 7 full days (and two partial days) to see as much of Iceland as we can. We start in Reykjavik and then move on to the Golden Circle. We trek into the Highlands to see some cool geothermal activity and make sure to stop for every waterfall we can! We visit the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and make a detour from the Ring Road to visit the Westfjords and Dynjandi waterfall. We spend a couple days exploring Northern Iceland and all the cool hikes, falls, and geothermal activity we can fit in. In Eastern Iceland, we make a pitstop in Seydisfjordur and drive through the East Fjords region on our way to the incredible South Coast of Iceland. We make stops at glacier lagoons, incredible canyons and black sand beaches. Finally, we wrap up our trip with a relaxing visit to the Blue Lagoon. It was a whirlwind, but it was so worth it!

Great video full of useful, practical information. I would like to ask what city or town you stopped in each night. It would help give me (and others too) an idea of just how hard it can be pushed each day. Some places it is clear and other places I’m not exactly sure. Anyway, thanks for a great video and I will be sure to check out your others.

Thanks, I'm glad you found it helpful! Here's where we stayed each night: Night 1: Hotel Gullfoss - near Gullfoss Night 2: Fosshotel Reykholt - near Reykholt, not far from Snaefellsnes Peninsula Night 3: Guesthouse near Grundarfjordur and Kirkjufellsfoss on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula Night 4: Sunnuberg Guesthouse in Hofsos (if not going to the Westfjords, you could potentially stay further north near Akureyri or Myvatn) Night 5: Fosshotel Husavik - if not detouring to Husavik, could stay in the Myvatn area instead; Myvatn could even be your base for nights 4/5 while exploring the north Night 6: Hotel Snaefell in Seydisfjordur (east Iceland) Night 7: Hotel Smyrlabjorg, near-ish to Jokulsarlon glacier; you could push further south on this day, but we really wanted to be near the glaciers for sunset/sunrise Night 8: Bru Guesthouse near Seljalandsfoss We went into the highlands on day 2, so we wanted to position ourselves well, hence staying near Gullfoss on Night 1; but if you don't plan on doing that, you could also stay in Reykjavik on Night 1 instead. Also, if you don't go to the Westfjords, you could shorten the trip by a day, or add that day to another part of the trip, either north Iceland near Myvatn, or south Iceland near the glaciers would both be good ideas. Also, just want to say that you could probably push this farther, but we didn't because we were working with limited daylight hours in September. If you're there in summer when the sun is up later, you might be able to get a little further each day. Hope this helps!

You can definitely cover a lot of ground if you're up for the challenge! It's always better to slow down when traveling, but sometimes we just don't have that luxury and we really enjoy showing people what's possible when you have limited time to explore. I've "done" Iceland twice, 4 weeks of hitch hiking and camping alone in September 1988, and 4 weeks of hitch hiking and camping with a girlfriend in July 1994, hitch hiking the North West fjords in September 88 was "pretty grim" as there was just one passing vehicle, every 1, 2 or even 4 hours, back then, the "ferry???" from Stykkisholmur was basically a small converted fishing boat, with space for ONE car, that had to be lifted onto it, (after driving onto a metal plate), by a mobile crane, the "crew???" of this "ferry???" consisted of identical triplets, UNLESS the Captain, Deck Hand, and the dude that sold me my ticket was "the SAME person"

Oh wow, that sound like quite an adventure! Times have definitely changed. It sounds like we saw much more traffic on the road to the Westfjords when we visited compared to when you visited. We're glad you enjoyed our video! August is a great time to visit Iceland! The weather should be fairly mild compared to other times of year (though we still recommend packing layers and having a windproof/waterproof outer layer). There will still be plenty of daylight for sightseeing. If you visit near the beginning of August, you have a pretty good chance of seeing puffins (something we didn't get to see when we visited in September). Thanks for watching!

What a great video! You two are so adorable. I’m planning a family trip to Iceland in September for a week as well and this video is definitely helpful to see so many things you can do in a day. We were hoping to see northern lights too but it seems to be a lot cloudier than I expected, did you manage to see it at all during your trip?
@MappingIt
@MappingIt 3 месяца назад
It was regularly cloudy out during our visit, but the weather in Iceland changes constantly, so even if it's cloudy during the day, it may end up being clear at night. We didn't see the northern lights during our trip, but that doesn't mean they weren't there - we just didn't think to look. One day during our trip, we realized the northern lights happened the night before and we missed out. So, if it's a goal of yours, make sure to always check the northern lights forecast each day of your trip for your specific location and set alarms to make sure you remember to go outside and check. You never know! But if you end up missing them like we did, think of it as an excuse to go back someday in the future! Hope you have a fantastic trip!

Did they have the elf houses on the side of the road still. I remember that from when I was there, they built tiny houses for the elves when I was there. It's like a whole tradition.

Love your video! Any reason for your choice on going clockwise vs anti clockwise on the ring road ?
@MappingIt
@MappingIt 8 месяцев назад
We're glad you enjoyed it! That's a great question, we thought a lot about which direction to go and we very deliberately picked going clockwise. From our research (and then our experience on our trip) the scenery just kept getting better and better in the clockwise direction. You start off fairly "small" with Thingvellir and Snaefellsnes. Then build up to Dynjandi, Myvatn and Dettifoss and finally you end with stunning glaciers and several incredible waterfalls. Also, it was nice to get a feel for Iceland in the early days of the trip by visiting less popular spots and ending on the most popular south coast. We also wrote a blog post about our trip if you're interested in learning more: karinandjeremy.com/blog/the-ultimate-one-week-iceland-ring-road-itinerary

Hello! Thanks a lot for the detailed video and itinerary! What week of September were you traveling in? How many hours of daylight did you have each day to explore?
@MappingIt
@MappingIt Месяц назад
We visited at the beginning of September. Sunrise and sunset were different each day based on the location we were at (sometimes by as much as 30 minutes difference). On average, we had about 13-14 hours of daylight each day. Sunrise was usually between 5:45am - 6:30am, and sunset was usually anytime between 7:45pm - 8:30pm, depending on where we were. We had quite a bit of daylight, but we pushed our itinerary to the max and had to pretty much be on the road by sunrise every day. Which is why this itinerary is much easier to do in the summer because you can stay out later at night instead of waking up really early.

Hey! Your video was quite detailed and impressive. Iceland looks so stunning! We are also planning to go there mid September till 2nd-3rd October. Had two doubts in my mind. Will the F-roads be operational during that time and in general would things be open? Also, would there be high chances of seeing the Northern lights around the Autumn Equinox date?
@MappingIt
@MappingIt 4 месяца назад
Iceland is great during the fall and the perfect time for a trip! Be sure to pack layers and make sure to have rain gear - it could be quite cold and rainy during your visit, but you never know what the weather will bring, you might also have beautiful sunny days. And the fall colors should be starting to pop at that time too. As for the F-roads, they should still be open during that time, but it really is weather-dependent. If possible, try to plan any time in the highlands or on F-roads near the beginning of your trip to have a better chance that they will be open when you visit. As for things in general, you shouldn't have any problem with access to services and facilities - everything should still be open at that time of year, but again, this may be weather-dependent. When we visited, the northern lights happened once but we didn't see them because we didn't keep an eye on the northern light forecast. Since you're planning to go at a later point in the month than we did, you will hopefully have a couple chances to see the northern lights. Our biggest tip is to keep an eye on the forecast everyday so you know if they're happening that night. Best of luck in your trip planning!

I really enjoyed this video. You sure covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time! I have a trip scheduled for Iceland this summer. I really want to visit Dynjandi but am afraid of that dirt road. How long are you on the dirt road for? I am also feeling overwhelmed trying to book places to stay. Am having a hard time trying to gauge how much time I need in one spot. Did you prebook all your hotels or just plan as you went? Thank you.
@MappingIt

Thanks for watching! We were on the dirt road for several hours, it's a long journey to get to Dynjandi. We weren't sure how much time we'd need in each spot, but we pre-booked all our accommodations before we went on our trip. Overall, we wished we had more time in each spot, but we couldn't take a longer trip so we had to make do with the time we had. Since you're going in summer, at least you'll have more daylight hours to explore, best of luck!

Wonderful video, thank you! Great drone footage too. Is there any advantage of going anti-clockwise versus clockwise?
@MappingIt
@MappingIt 5 месяцев назад
We're glad you liked it, it was an incredible trip! We specifically chose to go clockwise for two reasons: First, it allowed us to avoid crowds for as long as possible. The south coast of Iceland is the most popular area, so saving that for last allowed us to avoid crowds for the majority of our trip. Second (and more important to us), each day kept getting better than the day before. The scenery, the waterfalls, the hiking, the views, just kept getting better each day of our trip. It was so nice to save some of the "biggest hits" for last, like visiting the glaciers. We were so impressed by the scenery on our last few days of the trip. If we had gone the other direction, we might not have appreciated it as much. Thanks for watching!

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching! The drive took about 2 hours but we stopped a couple times on the way so that added time (there’s a cool waterfall you can check out on the way as well, right next to the road). The horseshoe bend is right next to the road but it’s not really marked in any way so you just have to keep an eye out. There is a small pullout where you can park and check out the view. Great tour of Iceland video with usefull tips and info. Thanks also for sharing accomodation info earlier. Going there in Sep this year, so really good to see a video from the same month. May I ask, which drone you have?
@MappingIt
@MappingIt Год назад
Book your accommodations soon, everything fills up months and months in advance and you don't want to miss out! At the time that we visited, we had a DJI Mavic Air - the first Air that was released - and ours was a refurbished model that we got in 2019. It has served us well for a very long time and really stood up to some of the strong winds in Iceland. But we've since upgraded our drone to the DJI Mini3 Pro and all our current drone footage is filmed on that. We love the smaller size and the much longer battery life and haven't seen any quality issues with photos or videos. If you plan to bring a drone to Iceland, and you'll have a car, you might want to consider buying a power inverter that you can plug into the cigarette lighter of the car to charge extra drone batteries on the go (be sure to test it before you go to make sure it works with your batteries, we've used a sine wave power inverter and it works well with drone batteries). Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

That sounds like it's going to be such a fun trip! We visited in September. When we were there, we went clockwise around Iceland, and we specifically chose to go that direction because when you go that way, the things you see just seem to keep getting better and better each day of the trip. That is our drone footage! We made sure to follow all local drone laws when droning in Iceland. Also, we are certified drone pilots in the EU and have registered our drone as well. There are lots of places were you can't fly a drone, and rules may have changed since the time that we visited, but even so, there are still many great places to fly a drone in Iceland! Easily the best activity we did on our trip and we would absolutely do it again! We got up close to so many icebergs and saw lots of seals! That was a main highlight for us. We did the Zodiac boat tour and had so much fun! They have amphibian boat tours, but those are much slower and don't get nearly as close to the glacier. Hope this helps you plan your trip!

We flew our drone in places where it was allowed, but that was a long time ago and those places may have new rules now. If you plan to fly a drone in Iceland, be sure to read up on the local drone laws and fly responsibly. The good news is that if droning isn't allowed in a particular place, there will usually be a sign saying droning is banned. As long as you pay attention to the signs and follow local laws, you should be able to fly your drone in many places around Iceland and still get some fantastic shots. Thanks for watching!

We took three lenses with us on this trip. Two Nikon lenses, one was a 70-300mm telephoto, one was 35mm prime, and the final lens was a Sigma wide-angle 10-20mm. It was great to have so much flexibility, and having a car meant we could store our gear easily. Thanks for watching!

Enjoyed your video, thanks. I'm going in April. Questions: 1)Footwear recommendations- You mentioned walking through mud a lot. How did you clean them? Hard to pack multiple pairs. 2) You appeared, at times, sun or wind burned. Do you recommend sunscreen? What did you use to navigate (GPS, map, etc.) and how was the coverage?
@MappingIt
@MappingIt Год назад
Thanks for watching! Answers (slightly long winded, lol): 1) We brought two pairs of shoes on our trip. Hiking boots and regular sneakers. We wore the hiking boots 90% of the time while we were out and about, and the sneakers anytime that we wanted a break from our boots (like when we were driving). Not every trail was bad, there were only some that got super muddy. When our boots got dirty, we mainly cleaned them in the grass after the hike, or in a stream if one was available. Overall, the mud wasn't that big of a deal, but I would certainly recommend hiking boots! Side note: in September, all the mud was due to rain, but I imagine that in April the mud would be from snow melt + rain, so there might be more mud when you visit. 2) We definitely got wind burned - the wind is super strong! Part of the rosy cheeks would also be redness from the temperature (and when paired with the wind, it's quite chilly). Sunscreen would be a good idea. 3) We downloaded google maps for offline use. We downloaded the maps to cover all of Iceland and never had a problem with getting driving directions even though we kept our phones in airplane mode the whole time. It even worked to get us to/from more remote destinations in the highlands so the coverage was great. Tip would be to star things in the map before your trip, so that when you look up directions, you can find starred locations a little easier. Highly recommend the offline maps for Iceland! Hope you have a good trip!

I have watched your video several times because this is the exact itinerary we are trying to put together. You have all the spots we want to hit. One of the biggest points of interest on our list is Hverandalir geothermal area in the highlands. We are staying our first night near Gullfoss but I am having a hard time finding the correct driving time and directions to Hverandalir by using Google maps. Can you give me the amount of time it took you to drive there from Gullfoss? I am getting anywhere from 1 hr 30 mins to 8 hrs plus lol. Your insight will hep tremendously!! Thank you P.S. I added this last question... I cannot find Horse Shoe Bend on google maps either. Any help on this would be helpful. I read somewhere that it can be easy to pass by if you don't know what to look for? Thanks again

The highlands in Iceland are so much fun to explore but they can definitely be hard to plan! Using google maps to help plan your trip can be a great start, except if you try to use it in the wrong season (like if you're planning a summer trip but doing research in winter) - we've made that mistake before! It won't have accurate routes or drive times because the F-roads are not open in winter. For us, it took about 2.5 hours to drive from Gullfoss to Hveradalir. That includes the 10 minutes along the way where we stopped check out a waterfall. Another thing to note about driving in the highlands is that you're going to need to be a confident driver. We passed many cars along the way where the person driving was not confident on the bumpy dirt roads. Having said that, use caution and don't be reckless - there are certainly times when you'll want to slow down and drive carefully, the road really deteriorates closer to the parking lot for Hveradalir. For horseshoe bend, we found it by looking at a satellite view on google maps and saving the pin. We definitely drove past it and had to turn around! It should be near these coordinates: 64°40'23.0"N 19°17'06.1"W If you have any other questions about the trip, or in case it helps in any way, we also wrote a blog post with a ton of details about our trip: karinandjeremy.com/blog/the-ultimate-one-week-iceland-ring-road-itinerary Have a great time in Iceland, it's a beautiful country and so much fun to explore!

Thanks for a great video, guys! If you had to do it all over again, would you have still gone in September or earlier (such as in August) to have the chance of better weather? Cheers.
@MappingIt
@MappingIt 5 месяцев назад
Great question! The weather in Iceland is super unpredictable and there's pros and cons to each month. You could go in September and have (mostly) decent weather, or go in August and end up being rained out the entire time. We're pretty lucky because we didn't really have too many problems with the weather on our trip, and we had a lot of layers to keep us warm and dry. That said, one of the things we missed out on was seeing puffins. They leave Iceland in August, so by the time we got there, they were long gone. If we were to visit again, we'd try to go at a time when we could see puffins and have a little extra daylight for exploring. But going when we did helped us avoid some of the peak summer crowds, which was really nice. Thanks for watching!

@@MappingIt Thanks a lot. Understood. The weather is totally unpredictable so you just have to go when you want and hope for the best. We want to go in September also to avoid the crowds but also in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights. If you don't mind, I have one last question. Can you please tell me what type of drone you used for those amazing drone shots?
@MappingIt
@MappingIt 5 месяцев назад
The Northern Lights are definitely on our bucket list! We missed out on seeing them while we were in Iceland because we fell asleep(!!) On that note, be sure to check the forecast and set multiple alarms if the weather is good. For this video, we were using a DJI Mavic Air - the original version, which we bought refurbished. It was fantastic for a very long time, but after a lot of use we upgraded to a newer model. Now we use the DJI Mini 3 Pro. It produces great photos and videos and it's super compact and easy to travel with.

was it in the start or end pf september? I am going to iceland in end of september and trying to understand if its worth to take a 4x4 or F-roads will be already close
@MappingIt
@MappingIt Месяц назад
We visited at the beginning on September and all highland roads were still open. Many roads may stay open through late September and even into early October, but it's entirely dependent on the weather. If you're at all considering going into the highlands, even if you're not 100% sure, we highly recommend renting a 4x4 just in case. It is more expensive than a regular car, but if the weather works out, you'll be so happy you have it! Plus, many of the regular roads that lead to waterfalls (not even highland roads) are a mess and we were so happy to have a high clearance vehicle for them. You're going to have a blast in Iceland and thanks for watching!

You're guess is spot on - we do have a Scandinavian background, it's cool that you spotted it! We both have Norwegian and Swedish heritage, with a couple other nationalities mixed in as well. I (Karin) have studied Norwegian since I was a kid, and leading up to our trip to Iceland, we both practiced Icelandic pronunciation and did some research to do our best to pronounce things correctly. With all the effort we put in to getting the names right, it's awesome that you noticed! Thanks for watching.

It really depends on what the weather's like when you visit. Some of the areas might still be covered in snow making for difficult driving (F-roads might not be open at that time of year), and hiking trails might be closed in some areas. That's exactly why we went in September: decent weather and all roads and hiking trails were still open for the season. Thanks for watching!

Nope, the only place we've swam in Iceland was at the Blue Lagoon. Aside from being very cold, some of the beaches are actually pretty dangerous because they have strong undertows that can pull you out to sea. We don't recommend swimming at the beaches in Iceland, but there are plenty of hot springs around the country that would be awesome to check out. Thanks for watching!

We had a great time visiting Iceland in September. There are some pros and some some cons to it: Pros: - The weather is still pretty nice (we had some really lovely days, but it wasn't perfect weather) - Easy to drive the Ring Road - Fewer crowds than summer Cons: - Not as much daylight as summer months - The weather can sometimes be iffy (we had a decent amount of wind, and some rain) - No puffins (go in June/July/August for puffins) - Fewer chances to see the northern lights (not impossible to see the northern lights in September, but better luck if you go in late fall/winter/spring for northern lights) We really wanted to see puffins on our trip, but sadly they had all left by the time we visited in September. So we would prioritize going at a time when there are puffins. If we didn't care about puffins, we would absolutely go back in September!

If you watched the portion of the video where we drove into the highlands, you may have seen some of the extremely bumpy roads we traveled on and the car handled it so well! In fact, we are renting the same car from them again when we visit later this year!
