Thank you. It's good to learn history -- good, bad, and ugly. Being ignorant of history never turns out well in the long run.

It's truly a beautiful and magnificent park. The rich history and landscape are amazing. We went thinking we'd be there 20 - 30 minutes and ended up spending a couple of hours.

Love the video. Knowing a little of the dark side is important. So as to not let history repeat (via awareness). Religion oft clouds our sense of reason.

We took a mini Ring Road tour that included Þingvellir National Park. We learned about BOTH people discovering Iceland and BOTH parliaments being formed. They said a woman discovered Iceland first. She was kidnapped by Vikings in what is now Norway. They sailed down to Ireland. Although locked away, she was the favorite of the head Viking. She managed to get free, stole the Viking’s favorite boat & him and his men in Ireland. He found her bathing at the tallest waterfall at Þingvellir. She still told him no even after all his effort to hunt her down. She said she could only be with him if he could survive diving from the top of the waterfall. Erik The Great survived. He got the credit for discovering Iceland, but a liberated independent woman was first. The second troll parliament was an argument over a rock in the ring road.

Christianity turned the vikings violent and intolerant. Irony... extremely fascinating. The history of Iceland never disappoints.

They were tied up and attached to stones. No amount of swimming would help with that.

The Icelandic witch trials were interesting in that the majority of those accused were men. I wonder if this is the area in Iceland where those trials took place?

Indeed. I believe there were here and different places, like the West fjords. I need to read up on it more because I want to do a video about it. 😊

The story of how Iceland became Christian is fascinating. In the Saga of Burnt Njal, it tells that during the Althing, here at Thingvellir, it looked as if there would possibly be violence over the issue. The question was put to a non Christian man, who declared that henceforth Iceland would be Christian, but that the pagans would not be forced to give up their ways or beliefs. In this episode on this channel, you are hearing what happened to religious tolerance when Christianity became strongly entrenched in Iceland. It did not follow the tolerance taught by Jesus, and essentially decreed, “THOU SHALT KILL”!. This is a lesson for us all, often those who claim to be strongly religious are really pseudo christian, self righteous hypocrites with a dual vision of what is right behavior. To whit: if someone else does it wnd shakes your faith, it must be horribly wrong. However, if you are disturbed by what they are doing, it os ok to commit violence against them, the complete betrayal of Jesus and his teachings!
