Iceland Volcano Eruption Update; 2 Simultaneous Eruptions May Soon Occur

In Iceland, there is a distinct possibility that the Reykjanes volcano which is currently erupting may soon be joined by a second, separate eruption. This surprisingly probable outcome is owed to the low eruptive rate of the ongoing eruption being outpaced by the influx of molten rock to a 5 kilometer depth magma chamber.

Two eruptions simultaneously occurring from the same volcano is a rare phenomena. However, Mount Etna in Italy has also produced such events (highly infrequently) in the past.

If a second conduit runs from the magma chamber, for a second eruption, runs to the region north east to south west of the current eruption, wouldn't it have to enter the magma dyke which would then just increase the effusion of the current eruption?
@GeologyHub
@GeologyHub Месяц назад
@@georgobergfell Trust me, Campi Flegrei isn't yet in the end stage of uplift that would be expected before an eruption. It has uplift which is largely 15 cm/year but briefly jumps to 75 cm/year for a week or two from time to time. I would only start worrying if uplift rates maintained at the 600 cm+/year we witnessed before Campi Flegrei's last eruption in the 16th century (VEI 3).

Now that you bring this up, I now have a follow-up question: if a volcano is producing 2 distinct eruptions simultaneously, how can we tell that this is what's happening as opposed to being an additional vent that formed from the same eruption?
@kathleenmccann3120
@kathleenmccann3120 Месяц назад
Why is Three cubic meters per second the minimum? I’ve seen this metric many times but have not found anything explaining it. Thanks for all the great information.
@tomahawkk
@tomahawkk Месяц назад
@kathleenmccann3120 it's the minimum amount of lava effusion required to actually sustain the eruption 👍
@seriousmaran9414
@seriousmaran9414 Месяц назад
@kathleenmccann3120 it seems that at that point the flow is low enough for the lava to cool enough while travelling up to the surface to harden and slow. Once it starts hardening there is only going to be time before it stops. It is possible that the new lava builds enough pressure to start it up again. This is what happens at normal volcanoes where the eruption happens in the nearly the same location every time. You have that new layer on the surface but other things come into play too. This is also a series of fissure volcanoes. When one erupts, it pushes the land apart in that location. This puts more stress on other nearby areas along the fault. So it is more likely to produce a new eruption at another location along the line.
@MeargleSchmeargle
@MeargleSchmeargle Месяц назад
@tomahawkk As for the reason behind what actually causes that to be the minimum, if I had to take an educated guess, it likely has to do with the minimum pressure exerted by rising magma required to escape to the surface. Having the pressure be any lower than that means that the magma doesn't have enough "oomph" to escape at all.
@seriousmaran9414
@seriousmaran9414 Месяц назад
If another vent opens to the south west or north east of the present one it is very likely to be a new eruption following a different path. This would be because the present vents have blocked themselves. Also see other response above.

In the case of another magma run event, I think its more likely to reinforce the previous eruption vents. They still are the weakest points. While there may be "veins" as you described it seems more likely the fissure where the eruption has been happening is a single line. Unless the magma took a route to a completely different area I cant see a second eruption as likely as reinforcing current/short past vents.

@michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 Месяц назад
@@jantjarks7946 it's a ridge running thousands of miles from north to south so it is not anything like a dome. It is the point from which the North American and Eurasian plates in the north and the South American and African plates in the South are spreading from. Though I suppose Iceland is a growing dome because it sits on the spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

GeologyHub is autistic, which is the reason for his sometimes rather monotone delivery - see the intro to his Iceland drone flight where he explains that. He is actually an interesting person when you get to know him through his videos a bit (see that intro again). And as for lacking emotion and humanity - have you listened to his 'Major eruption on Raung' video about 4 days ago? His warnings are passionate, the emotion and humanity break through his normal delivery and are obvious. And by the way, some members actively like his voice, often because they find it calming. We are not all the same, and nor should we be!
