Iceland Volcano Update - Seismic Activity Causes Concern About Hekla

There has been some unusual earthquake activity near the Icelandic volcano Hekla so experts have expressed concern over the uncertainty that characterises this huge volcano. Everything was calm though when this post was uploaded but I am however adding some necessary links to use in case of an eruption, with a little bit of information and photos of course.

I was the same with the Askja eruption but most of the people took off to Canada back then so we Icelanders are all around the world now. You might like this story here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AOQnnc2IppY.html

Living below a sleeping volcano that historically threw out cabin sized boulders in the 20th Century, it is insane to see those folks clambering up Hekla! One burp and they could have been set on fire or flattened by a lava bomb...never mind the guy standing with steam and gases blowing forcefully around him. What they didn't know I guess didn't bother them. Great video as always!

There have been quake swarms at Högnhöfthi south of Langjökul. Some of the are shallow. It seems to have coled down now. Then it started to move at Botnahnukur north Hveragerthi about 4 km deep so farily shallow. Hope it calm down without anything happening because it's so close to the town. There where a spot on the flat land NW of Hengil that repeatedly got earthquake at the begining at the eruption at Reykanes peninsula but that to seems to have calmed down. Looks like a trend that magma is also moving furhter east from the peninsula? But nothing close as hectic as before the eruption at the peninsula so nothing to wory about.

I guess we can hope that the fissure at Fagradalsfjall is easing the pressure on Hekla. I mean, that thing is going crazy. It's insane to imagine that those huge amounts of magma are coming from the mantle of Earth and just keeps coming. Thanks for the update.

@@annakeye Thanks. Yes I’m Icelandic. Actually suffering from sore throat and headache because of my close proximity to the volcano only a couple of miles from me. ;j The mid Atlantic ridge goes through the country from southwest to north east and is divided into several fissures, each a separate sones of activity. The volcano erupting is at one of the west most area at the tip of a peninsula. Hekla is east of the middle in a sone that erupts quite frequently. Approaching Hekla in 1980, you could feel it before you could see or hear it. Sort of like base note on a large church organ. As we got nearer, lava fountains, lava bombs, smoke and ash filled the sky. When within walking distance of the lava flow you could see orange lava just under the surface of blackened surface lava. The whole moving wall of lava gave off a crinkling noise of broken glass as it advance slowly across lava plane. The ultimate show of nature’s power during my tour at Naval Air Station Keflavik. Too much fun exploring Iceland whenever opportunity arose.

Can you tell me if Hafnarfjordur would be safe from an eruption from Hekla? We were under the gas cloud today from Geldingdalur and it gave us headaches. I am getting a little worried about these volcanoes.
@kolbeinnhelgi6341
@kolbeinnhelgi6341 3 года назад
You'll be fine, usually it's just a "tourist eruption" and it's a lot farther away from Hafnafjörður than Fagridalur.

I loved Akureyri when I visited Iceland 30 years ago, and was inspired to follow those women that brought the trees and flowers there..... after our stay with Knutur at Osar, we camped at municipal campsite, enjoyed the great swimmingbath... and those blue poppies at the botanical garden. after all these years, this 6 week trip on the bus on road no1 around the island was so memorable, that my daughter's dad often feared I would emigrate there... have often thought of the context of your government allowing the Americans to dig that big hole through a mountain to rush water through to power their aluminum plant.... and the fact that soon after completion and the water rushing through, your economy went down the drain just like that.... did the ELVES have their revenge stante pedes? just a thought

Well was fun watching your videos. After the eruption, if the ocean froze (due to the density of the volcanic hashes and the lack of sun) try to drive west to Groenland. Forget about the Feroe Island, they will be covered by the hashes. Oh don't forget the compass.

Iceland seems to have the other end of the stick from Canada when it comes to climate change these days. Same here, unusually cold and wet. I guess you'll have to find other ways to get it warm up there, but maybe next year you'll be so lucky to end up in a strong jet stream dome and experience 49.6 Celcius in Rekjavik. You may want to invest in airco before that happens though.

Super speedy chicken! Who knew, fabulous volcanos, an almost unspeakable language, and high speed chickens, Iceland. And of course, there’s the footage of the three or four intrepid explorers having what is known as a caldera shindig, eggs, vodka, and toast. Damn Icelanders know how to do some SERIOUS apocalyptic partying!
