Thanks Shawn. Katla is definitely one to watch. Some of those tremors were recorded as being from the surface. Could they have been signs of ice or snow moving?

Great report, especially about the new Iceland website. As a retired Earth Science teacher, I wish we had that comprehensive site for our Cascadia subduction zone, and the San Andreas strike slip zone. Both have stresses building, but have very important local factors. The News stations can only report on what the scientists like you give them. We need Gelogical "weather" Situation Reports to educate the public.

Thank you Shawn. I enjoy watching yours and Gylfi's videos tremendously. I suppose I am a failed geologist/vulcanologist. I used to enjoy reading up about geomorphology, but could not afford varsity to study in that field. That is why I am always eager to see what your insights are. Keep well and take care. Sending you best wishes from NZ.

Pretty neat to understand the charts and maps better after so many online videos, Shawn. [Bruce, your graph shows (graphically 😉) a very interesting earthquake relationship.] Katla's event adds to our knowledge of the Icelanders' lives! Interesting but challenging. Thanks again!

Thank you, Shawn! We really appreciate your updates which are always very informative and filled with lots of news and scientific data (ty Amanda Jo and Bruce for their very valuable help :) Gylfi (Just Icelandic) just put out a video about Katla and the recent glacial flood. This event was one of the three largest Katla events since it last erupted in 1918, he said... Anyway, the floods are over now and the road is fixed (almost!): Icelanders never cease to amaze me :)

The ground rise thing, that's awesome. I do the exact same thing with Kilauea. For the most part at Kilauea, it's a range of 0.20 meters to 0.25 meters of total ground uplift before an intrusion. I also like the projection of end of August, that's what I called about a month ago. ;)

IMO stated in this update (and the July 23rd update as well) that scenario 1 (between Stora Skogafell and Sylingarfell) and scenario 2 (between Hagafell and Grindavik) are equal in likeliness of happening. They stopped favoring scenario 1 as the most likely to happen. 11:20 the EQ you point out in April (and compare them to the EQ happening now), you forget to mention these April quakes were with an eruption going on so I'm not so sure you can compare them? The closest to the current number of EQ without an ongoing eruption is the amount of quakes around May 21st/22nd, that was 7-8 days from eruption. The same expected time IMO gives for this moment.

QUESTION: They built that berm at the top of the hill over the power plant. The lava hasn't moved in that direction yet, so I assume that is a sort of saddle between the two mountains that has a higher elevation than the valley. Each eruption raises the height of the lave field, though. Are there topographic maps that show what is going on there?

Not sure if you have time to read comments Shawn, I just want to add that the 'change of scales' in the GPS data is because of some incorrect data points. You can see two data points on all three plots at 13:46 as well as some other GPS charts. Maybe they'll get corrected or removed in the future to fix the scaling. Thanks for your videos!

Is there enough suspended sediment in the glacier outburst flow to significantly increase the density of the fluid impacting structures such as bridges, dikes and dams? I think that likely, but hell, I've only a BS in Geology. I also have experience mixing and delivering concrete, and that looks like the wash-down water sloshing around in a mixer. I bet that volcanic sediment could make some high-quality cement.

Thanks for the update, I had a feeling you might be posting one around now. Looking at the defensive berms north of Grindavik, I wonder if the authorities have considered making a second berm inside (south) of the first in case lava flows over the existing berm and/or a fissure opens up just inside of it. Maybe too difficult with cracks in the ground there?

Curious on the difference between met office staing 7-10 days while others expect it to happen in weeks, If only you were to divulge when you will fly to Iceland with your lava fountain repair kit/tools, then we could accuretely predict when you would fix it so lava would flow again 🙂
@bluerendar2194
@bluerendar2194 Месяц назад
Note they said "increased likelihood" in 7-10 days, not that it's the most likely outcome. Probably the intended meaning is 'very unlikely before 7 days' but 'fair risk starting after 7 days (into the next few weeks).'

I think it’s interesting how each earth quack and eruption modifies the topography and ground composition such that the next eruption location is influenced by it the changes. One would think that the pressure would always vent through the weakest point. Wouldn’t it be great if some day they can install a pressure relief system into the magma layer - maybe during an eruption,that would offer a path for magma without resorting to the horrific explosions that have caused such devastation.

(Dec 18, Jan 14, Feb 8, Mar 16 & May 29 eruptions, lava fields, berms, hill names etc.) I wondered if you have a link that we can access to add the placemarkers to our own maps or if not, where you obtained the placemarks (I imagine you've made a few yourself.) 13:41 ...but they have recalibrated the axes... No, THEY haven't. These plots use autoscaling, i.e. the ordinate is automatically scaled to its min and max values. The two outliers around June 10 cause this problem. So, unless they manually remove the outliers this problem will persist until early September.
