My ICF blocks had a shallow dovetail groove on the face side to provide a mechanical bond for the stucco. Can't wait to see the porches in place, will change the whole look of the house 👍🇦🇺🦘
I have been watching for a while off and on about 3 years. It was always my husbands dream to homestead we did a little. He had an entrepreneurial heart, more than anyone I have ever known. He passed away in dec 2019 with pancreatic cancer, so he did not get to see this dream out however near the end he LOVED watching your videos. I just watched the one where you all were discussing and answering questions about your finances and really personal questions ... I just wanted to tell you I am praying God’s blessing for you and your family pressed down shaken together and overflowing. Keep up the hard work and as I learn and try to adjust to a new normal I will continue watching and learning, Thank you for what you do!!
I am so sorry to hear about your husband. I lost mine a year ago today to colon cancer. We also did a little homesteading, wanted to move but then... . Cancer. I'm happy that I got a victory garden planted and kept most of his trees alive they he planted last year in our food forest. Also just got rabbits and meat birds. It's a lot of work to do alone (plus 5 kids) but I know he'd be pleased.
My Grandma's house was 100% chicken wire with stucco. It was close to 200 years old. No leaks. You just need to maintain it and keep it painted. She lives in southern Missouri with no a/c, lots of heat and humidity and wood stove heat only for most of the winter. Good quality stucco applied correctly is a great choice.
And the finishing starts. Sometimes I think there is so much more work at this stage, but I also think it comes with much more satisfaction. So glad your grass is coming in now too. I can totally picture that property as it will be in a couple of years. Y'all are doing a great job at being patient! Hang in there! It really is coming together. Feels like forever, but it will so be worth it. You've worked so hard for this; sacrificed so much for this; and endured/persevered super well for all of this and it is coming together. I'm so excited for y'all!
Evening from New Zealand... the build is REALLY coming along and looks terrific - amazing work so far and super quick!!. The house appears to be built to a really high standard. Have truly enjoyed watching your journey thus far (been tuning in for a long time now) and appreciate you sharing all your trials, challenges and wins over the years. Inspirational! Stay safe during these very challenging times and I look forward to watching this and your many future projects.
Missing you and getting worried. Are you all well? Know you are busy with real life but I am concerned when we don’t get you for several weeks. Stay safe!
I came to see if I had missed any videos, but see in the comments you're just taking some time off from RU-vid. Hope all is well and am looking forward to your return.
WOW!!! Things are looking great!!! It's been terribly hot & humid here in the Northeast. Thankfully it does'nt last long, but while it's here we trudge through it with our day to day life. Thank you for sharing. Your dream is coming true!!
LOL. Growing a lawn is like growing a beard. I can relate. For me, it's mostly weeds and bugs with the occasional sprout in between. And the lawn doesn't look so great either.
I am sure you have received criticism about how slow you build in going because you chose to be your own general contractor (GC). The bonus is, you have been able to hire true craftsman who care as much about the finished product as you do ! Looking good !
Cool, we used the corbel/brick ledge on the inside of our basement wall to support top hung open web main floor trusses... very simple to setup and add a sill for trusses. Very strong(2000lb/linear ft) and solid...
Hi again! Prep prep and more prep! A must though to have a nice finish. House is looking so nice!! Can hardly wait for you all to get settled. You deserve the peace and the comfort finally! You're on the last parts of the build so keep hanging in. Too bad it has to be so hot and humid but can't do anything about that part. Stay healthy and safe. Thx as always for the update. And yes ARIAT is the Best!!!
I have been trying to catch up on all these videos ever since I found your channel. Came for canning information, decided to hang out and binge watch everything. Love the videos!
I cannot believe how much of my extremely valuable time your videos are taking up. This must be what drug addicts endure. I gotta get my fix! I cannot say how much I have been enjoying all of these. I don't know what I will do when I have seen them all. You guys are the best of what makes America great! Cheers, Vic
Work hard for 20 minutes and your sweating your shorts here in central Kentucky. I’ve been digging and chopping out a stump in my backyard 30 minutes at a time for the last week and a half. At 64 it’s a little harder than it was at 30. On a good note, Our spring was extended this year with some great weather !
I agree, it is hard work digging stumps. I like four or more feet of tree trunk left on for leverage. They are also easier if the trees die before they were cut down. Last week my sons and I ripped some dead trees out like grizzly bears. The biggest one was about 30 foot and I t was so weak it broke into 3 long pieces as it fell. I am only 48 but beginning to feel my age. I got to hand it to for doing that at 64.
I do not get on here and comment as much as I probably should. if I may take up a couple of minutes of your time and just tell you how much I appreciate your videos and content. If I may ask you if you are going to make some update videos at a later date on your solar array and possible any updates. Once again thank you for all that you do and much respect.
Thank you for the video! Both of you are excellent models for Ariat! I'm glad that the stucco is finished, and I look forward to watching you build the porch.
If you are in a humid climate you should really be wary of James Hardi's products which are paper based and disintegrate in moisture. These include their tile backerboard, Hardiplank siding, Hardi panel, etc. Just a word to the wise... Anything that snow lays against, rain gets on, water etc. will not hold up. They also have a history of not honoring their stated warranty.
We stuccoed our foam on the basement as well. I had to hurry the contractor up as turkeys were pecking away at the foam. They had it down to the concrete in a few places.
With a million dollar view like the one y'all have I can visualize That deck wrapping around that house, sun tea brewing and the grill going. I wasn't sure about the stucko at first but I like it!
Laughed out loud at your beard comment Jeremy. 🤣 I have a son named Jeremy whose facial hair also takes its time. lol Can't wait to see the outside all done !!!
Looking great ...been with ya'll from the very beging ,way b4 u got here ....love ur vlogs ....miss seeing you ...what's up ....hope all is well with everyone & everything !!! Heres wishing u Blessings
We just built our house after losing our old farm house (110 years old) to hurricane Harvey. My builder (45 years experience) told me, never use stucco in a high humidity area. Moisture will seep in and rust the metal grid and then start mold growing in the walls. I do live near the Gulf Coast and our RH stays between 75-100% most every day.
Been checking daily for new video? Hope everyone is well and no health issues but so looking forward to seeing what new things ya’ll have accomplished on your home👍please post a new video soon if possible! Thanks it’s been 2 weeks now😞
@@Guildbrookfarm We figured your were taking time off. It is well deserved as this YT publishing is an additional full-time job for your family. ENJOY!
Consider tying the porch into the house with smooth steel dowel rods instead of rebar, with some foam between the fresh and existing concrete. May want to avoid bonding existing concrete to new concrete with rebar because the slabs will try to move independently and crack due to the rebar. Anyway bounce it off some concrete people. I am no expert, just parroting a common recommendation I have seen. House looks great! ICF FTW
I'm with swedish - I'd be reluctant thing the porches to the house with rebar. If there is any independent movement of either house or porch, one or the other will give way. The dowel system allows for movement and avoid damage to the house.
Don't do stone around the entry door - it's something of a modern fad that won't look right on a modern mountain home. Only do stone (whether real or veneer) on supporting or foundation elements. Use only traditional siding above that foundation line. I know I'm just a random internet commenter, but trust me on this. You guys are doing a great job.
I tried a beard, and nope it would only grow in batches, lol. House is coming along very well especially with all that is going on with the virus. Have a great weekend
I finally got all the stuff to make your GF flour blend. Using my Vita Mix, definitely way messy, but got it done and into canning jars to store. Now to make some bread in the next few days. I also tried the Dandy Blend and love it so just got a bigger sack today. I love all the drinks you make for flu and cold season. I think the Dandy Blend is my favorite and love it cold. And the milk and Turmeric is my 2nd favorite so far.
Good thing their are skilled tradesman to do the great work. My husband and I would have killed one another attempting this. I bet you could do it. Looks great. Love the progress!
I'm kinda of curious how this works out, from what I have seen you're still supposed to use a house wrap or drainage plane behind the stucco, but I have seen people stucco straight over the foam. I have researched it endlessly and havent came up with a confirmation that stucco straight onto the foam is a good idea
Man I'd be freaking on how long it took to get finished, You guys must be spending a fortune. Hope it all comes together and is finished soon. Cheers and Peace Out
Good call. Water is the contractor's (and homeowner's) enemy. Guys, I don't know about the idea of rebarring the slab to the structure. You may want to talk to a few masons about the long term outlook for that.
Guildbrook Farm, I hope you people are ok. Not getting notifications when a new video is done. Is any one else having this problem?.I hope all is well.
Looks great. So your porches are going to be cement? Be interesting to see that - thanks for sharing and taking us along for the journey. BTW - the view is AMAZING.
How is the fiber glass mesh attached to the foam? Will water be permanently be diverted away from the wall? Will it last the lifetime of the building? Removing excess concrete when it was placed seems more efficient than trying to fix it after it is set. Very interesting, but very interesting can generate lots of questions. Thank You
The mesh is applied to the wall with the fake stucco mixture that they are applying to the wall. You can apply a thin swipe to the wall and then lay the mesh against it to hold it in place while applying a thicker coat. If done 100% correctly the fake stucco is supposed to be waterproof, but there have been thousands of fails throughout the industry over the years. When I worked in the field the EIFS was not recommended for below-grade use. Most of the fails were due to incorrect waterproofing around openings in the system such as doors, windows, and pipes.
I have a lot of catching up to do. The last vids I watched were your solar ones and they were outstanding. I'm interested to know if you've moved the system to the new house. Cheers
Do you ever get used to that kind of heat and humidity? The house looks more gorgeous overtime I see it. I wish I had neighbors like you, although I have some old school New Englanders that mind their own business and say hi. So I'll take it!
I remember my grandma making jams and sauces in old grocery store jars, and used *Cellophane jam jar covers* and rubber bands as lids. Worked perfectly. Have you tried them?
I did this on a large bald spot and it worked pretty well. I have guinea pigs so used up some hay that got damp and went bad. I dunno if the birds took it but it dissapeared pretty quick too.
Sorry this question is for the canning video. I commented there but maybe it's too old for the notifications to.come through. I just wonder if some siphoning or liquid loss is normal or usual. You made it sound like it sort of is but I want to be sure. I haven't been able to get a very straight answer about it. Thanks.
