The musical tells the story of Elisabeth ("Sisi"), the Empress of Austria, from her engagement and marriage in 1854 to her murder in 1898. The musical never went to Broadway, even though this song in particular was translated to English. It is the most famous and best-selling musical in German language.
The show opened in 1992, in Vienna; with Pia Dowes playing the role of Elisabeth. Willemijn Verkaik (famous for playing Elphaba in Wicked) also got the role in the 2000's.
