Together with "Mache dich, mein Herze rein" from the Matheuspassion and "Schlummert ein" from this cantate, this is the most beautiful aria Bach has ever written for bass bariton. I've heard this music hundreds of times, and every time, like this time, I'm moved .

I understand why listeners like the oboist more 🙂. The oboist is just a live person, and a jew, if i am not mistaken. The German performer is so perfect, he looks like a God, or right to say 'Got' 🙂, watchers can feel themselves 'untermenschen' 🙈.

Meh......all the instrumentalists are doing the show of 'getting into it', and yet the playing is basically rather sloppy. The oboist is often 'off the beat' in ways inconsistent with the score, and not really appropriate for this style of music. Give a listen to the oboe (Meyer) in the Thomas Quasthoff recording, who plays it as written but yet artfully and it will bring tears to your eyes.
Agreed exactly. There are a lot of musicians who don't really "get" Baroque music... and think playing in a Romantic or modern style is hip... when in reality it just sounds ridiculous. Mayer's oboe in the Quasthoff recording is, I agree, infinitely more beautiful. The oboist in this version seems like Kenny G playing a slow jazz solo, all over the place, soft then hard then too slow then too fast. It's almost hard to listen to.
I'm not really satisfied with the oboist's performance either, but these are some of the most difficult fingerings ever for baroque oboe (much easier on modern oboe for Albrecht Mayer).
The oboe in this cantata is not an accompanying instrument. This is an oboe-baritone voice duet, so the oboe should be played just as stylistically as the aria is sung. However, why the hell was he dancing???
