One of the most impactful moments in Bleach is The Lust mini-arc, also referred to as 'The Dome' mini-arc by fans. Here, Ichigo falls - his spirit and will aren't enough to overcome his enemy and he's actually killed in battle. In this video, we'll take a look at the dome sequence of the Ichigo vs Ulquiorra battle and how it made for one of, if not the darkest scene in all of Bleach.

@@rainnseras6562 I can't say how much, but part of that animosity is the fact that Orihime and Ichigo are together in the end. I won't defend the ending as a masterpiece but as far as Ichigo and Orihime's relationship is concerned, Kubo did an excellent job placing a romance into a shonen series. This fight in particular forced them both to face some tough realities: for Ichigo, his determination to win for his friends (Orihime) was warped when he reached the limits of his strength, which I think played a role in him accepting the cost of using the Final Getsuga Tensho; and for Orihime, seeing Ichigo die, being unable to help, and the resulting transformation guided only by the instinct to protect her and only her (sorry Uryu) made her realize that she had placed too much on Ichigo's shoulders and led to her growth during the Fullbringer and TYBW arcs. The culmination was Ichigo relying on her in their battle against the Quincy King.

@@rainnseras6562 Well people who call Orihime dump don't know Orihime actually ranks above Ichigo in their school where Ichigo was maybe at top 25 but Orihime went to top 10 which was shown in first arc of manga and Anime as well. There is a different between characters being dump or characters being too much goofy or ignorant. Orihime is goofy to keep audience entertained but she never shows lack of awareness in any situation. Ofcourse she oftens acts dump but that just keep her character more comedic or else she would turn into personalityless character like Hinata. Also a lot of fans forget that how Orihime represents another aspect of people living alone. I mean since her brother died she was living alone and only one she had ever to talk was her dead brother's photo frame and that itself showed how lonely it was for her to live alone and how lucky Ichigo is of having a father and sisters that he can spend time with. Also regarding why her character writing is not as good as that of other female characters especially Rukia and Rangiku and that's becoz of the writer's fault of not investing enough time to give her character development. Arrancar arc could have been a perfect arc to give her a character development but it was total disappointment for her character development as she had no role in that arc. Like what the hell Aizan was think of kidnapping her if he wasn't going to use her power. In my opinion it would be better if Orihime would have been responsible for Hogyukyu being fused with Aizan. For example if Hogyuku required time to be fully usable to unlock and Aizan didn't had that time to wait so she kidnapped Orihime as to use her power to fully activate Hogyuku while Orihime having her own plans of tricking Aizan and destroying Hogyuku but by doing so she falls right into Aizan plan and does accidentally she activates the Hogyuku. By that atleast she would have any involvement in the plot than playing only Damsel in Distress.

What makes this fight so hard hitting for me, is that anime usually has a trope like this . Main character is near death and unlocks his terrifying demon powers only to shut them away at the last moment once the villain is defeated . But zangetsu taking over here doesn’t feel like ichigo, White is truely the most terrifying character at this point. Ulqiorra getting wrecked felt good for the first couple of pages but as the fight went on, it felt like watching a brutal overkill. REAL DESPAIR for the reader is LOSING the what we LOVE about the main protagonist. and for a brief time ichigo really was dead as zangetsu used his body to fight. Scary shit

That's a great point about how it felt to watch Ulquiorra lose. You definitely get caught up in the moment when White takes his arm, but then it keeps going and just gets more and more unnecessary. Great moment.

The moments where the hero is overkilling the villain in a fit of rage, "shifting" the roles they had the beginning of the fight, are always fun to watch/read. That's why Gon vs Pitou in HxH, for example, left such an impression. You don't feel like the good guys won, despite the villain being defeated.
@luciussakura5031
@luciussakura5031 3 года назад
I also think it's important to remember that zangetsu is ichigo and that some part of ichigo is capable of those acts, which is one of the best parts of this fight for me, seeing just how far ichigo could go.
@ninboy01
@ninboy01 3 года назад
@@luciussakura5031 People do lose that perspective, especially those who didn’t finish the last arc when Ichigo recognizes both White and the Old Man are part of himself. Zangetsu isn’t some souless monster that is operating separate of Ichigo’s will here. It’s Ichigo’s own soul reacting on pure instinct to survive, and is responding to his desire protect his friends; even if he is unconscious of his actions and is uncharacteristically brutalizing his opponent. I always see a lot of people pushing the narrative that “Ichigo lost his soul/humanity while Ulquiorra gained humanity.” As if the only thing important here is Ulquiorra’s character growth. Especially with the benefit of hindsight, that argument mischaracterizes Zangetsu’s nature. It’s fighting to save Ichigo’s life here. And despite how monstrous he seems, it’s only to protect Ichigo, as that’s been it’s goal for the entirety of the series. So there is more depth here than just orchestrating a scenario for Ulquiorra to become humanized by comparison.

The difference in this fight unlike all other fights in bleach is that nobody felt like a winner in the end. It ends with a quite letteral a "hollow" ending. Ichigo wins, but it hardly feels like a victory. Ulquiorra is defeated, yet no one is happy about it. Everyone is shocked, saddened, and emotionally scarred from the situation. There was no heroic ending, only an empty win, that "hollow victory" I mentioned before that I think wraps up this side-story so well.

If there's one thing that really stuck with me about this fight, it's how right after Ichigo stabs Uryuu, he turns to Orihime and mindlessly repeats "protect... her..." it's like his desire to protect is taken to its most negative conclusion here and that was just haunting to read

I actually felt Orihime screaming for Ichigo and the whole time is really well thought. I mean she’s already weak mentally being kidnapped for how long? And she is like only 16 in this, and she is watching the person she loves not able to survive. The best moment is when he’s dead on the floor and she is dealing with loss of her savior. I don’t know it’s really really human and a very intense moment.

@@rainnseras6562 Orihime willingly joined Aizen in Las Noches so that she could destroy the Hogyoku. That disproves her lack of knowledge. She was aware her powers would have thwarted Aizen's goals. She saved Tatsuki from that perverted Hollow, healed Ichigo a million times, and saved the former from a premature death. Ichigo's willpower was crushed by Ulquiorra. He never gave up, but his willpower was wavering. Ichigo would have stayed dead had he not listened to Orihime's shrieks, because at that point in the story, she was the most he cared for. I would like to make a small observation regarding Ichigo's nature, which is relative to his relationship with Inoue. Ichigo has got the heart of a warrior, he loves battle just as much as Kenpachi, though Ichi is a lot more composed, but he still is a maniac. It is noticeable when he fights Renji for the first time, he is relishing in all the power that's flowing within him. He arrogantly laughs and exclaims how good it feels (notice how he somehow sounded like a villain there). When he fights Grimmjow for the second time, Ichigo tells him that he has come to settle things, meaning that not only was he there for Orihime but also to beat the shit outta him, because that's what he likes doing. He seemingly struggled a bit in the fight against Grimmjow, but when Orihime cheered on him, he become determined to stop toying with Grimmjow and remembered what he was really there for, to save his beloved. My point is that Orihime is not only a lifesaving goddess (who cured hundreds of Shinigami after the war as stated in the novel Can't Fear Your Own World), but also the one to tame Ichigo's incredible wild side. Notice how Ichigo's scowl slowly disappears throughout the series as he becomes closer to Orihime. I can't think of another couple in manga that has added actual character development to the protagonist other than Casca and Guts.

I don't think Fullbring was that dark through. I mean just think what would have happened if Rukia and other's didn't came to help Ichigo. Tsukishima never wanted Ichigo's friends, he only used them to get Ichigo and take his powers. Also being stab a second time would return their memories and restore their past but if Tsukishima would have done that to Chad and Orihime, then it would be totally devastating for those 2. Those 2 who became strong to support Ichigo used their powers to hurt him and support his enemy. I think that's why they killed Tsukishima as if Tsukishima dying erased their past with Tsukishima and they don't remember hurting Ichigo like that.

Moreover, you mentioned the fact that he didn't give up in the battle with Ulquiorra, but he did give up against Aizen and Yhwach - maybe this fight had broken his will. Theres no way he could defeat Aizen when he couldn't beat the strongest Espada. He didnt achieve growth by his own. Ofc turning Vasto Lorde was a big jump power boost but it's not like he could use it consistently and control it. Therefore that power boost is forfeited. This is what caused disharmony between them following this fight because Zangetsu wanted to protect Ichigo rather than Ichigo’s friends. The main reason why Ichigo lost hope against Aizen was because he literally watched all the captains get taken down as well as his dad, Yoruichi, and Urahara. He felt if they couldn't beat him how could he? But, there was never no sense of dread or terror built when Aizen was winning. It was just like "ah this guy's just too strong he's just going to go about his way when he beats all of the captains". I never sensed any bloodlust or ill intent when Aizen fought them also. He just wanted to prove that they were beneath them in terms of power and ability. I think the battle between Ichigo and Ulquiorra was more darker because we there was a lot of despair and foreboding built up that something bad was going to happen as you said. Seeing the mental breakdown of Orihime and Uryu's rage when Ichigo died confirmed the climax we were waiting for in that despair. Ulquiorra actually had the desire to not only break Ichigo's will but wanted to kill him also, unlike Aizen who only toyed and tested Ichigo to see how far he matured. He became bored and disinterested with him after he had nothing else to offer, so he just told him to literally leave.

Something I find really interesting about the Ulquorria vs. Vasto Lorde Ichigo fight is that there are basically three versions of it: manga, anime, movie. The manga is a straight up curbstomp, Ulquorria in the anime tries to go toe-to-toe but Vasto Lorde does the same thing to him he did to Ichigo, and in the Hellverse movie they’re throwing each other all over the place.

Normally shonen has the main character almost lose and gets some insane power, but Ichigo legit dies and it’s not him. While everyone loves the fight everyone has this salty feeling of “ichigo didn’t win that...”, the same back with Byakuya. Ichigo died causing Orihime to cry, Orihime: a happy character that only lives happily because of Ichigo, started to break down. Ichigo literally dead here’s the cries, and he becomes a literal monster with no control with the only resemblance of Ichigo is his one desire to protect Orihime. It’s a battle between the main character who became a literal monster, and a literal monster that became human. Neither side is good, but if there’s a villain it’s white. I could talk about this fight for hours and why Ulquiorra is one of the best written characters anywhere in anything

Although I have my personal complaints with Hueco Mundo as a location, the setting couldnt have been more perfect for this battle. Ulquiorra, the very embodiment of nihilistic hopelesness and despair, being overwhelmed by a monster driven by its desire to kill (maybe it was called "The Lust" for White's lust for battle? Idk) with the landscape of an empty and hollow world at the background. All ending with that same nihilist finally finding out what a heart is before vanishing into oblivion. It's really poetic and it shows Kubo's range as a writer.

Ichigo started to lose hope after the Ulquiorra fight because of Ulquiorra. He knew for the first time what it was like to lose himself. That’s why he’s so worried and shaken towards the idea of the fight against Aizen. He’s basically stumbling over himself when he returns to the world of the living and it’s because he knows now that hope is far from enough to win against some opponents.

Kubo's artistic use of the color black deserves it's own video honestly. The shading used the give characters darker expressions.The way darkness is used to convey grief, regrets, and despair. The subversive use of Black and white contrast to depict conflicting goals like light vs shadow (Lille baro vs Kyoraku) and white vs black (Aizen vs Ichigo; Ichigo vs Byakuya). The name Bleach is associated with the contrast between white and black, as it dissolves the boundaries between them.

I love how the chapter titles for this battle reference the Seven Deadly Sins, and how the animals in the post-chapter illustrations reference them in some way (bear is sloth, coyote is greed, scorpion is lust, etc)

One thing I love reading/watching this again post final arc is the little nod to Zangetsus true nature. Upon seeing Ichigos transformation Ulquiorra asks "who are you?" and then Hollow Ichigo puts out his hand and summons his blade which in its own way answers his question as after all, he is actually Zangetsu.

The reason he losses hope with Aizen is that Ichigo losses control of White after his evolution. Its shown after Ulqiorra's fight when Ichigo tries to hollowfy, but the mask carries a lot more pressure than before. He begins to panic and is scared of his hollow side again.

I am a Bleach Fan and have read a lot of the manga and am currently working on purchasing my own volume set of it to read, but your insight and knowledge of the series is always extremely interesting. I thought i'd comment today finally because of the music you added in during this video really setting the mood of the discussion, I feel I had not quite read the Ichigo vs Ulquiorra fight properly until watching this video, due to your analysis and editing. Best analysis, of my fav mini arc. thanks Tommo. Ulquiorra is my all time fav character. Kubo put a lot of time and thought into this character from the very first time we encounter him. We always were made to feel like he was a powerful being, even before he announced that he was espada #4. You put it well when you say that he was a mountain that ichigo had to climb and overcome. Best battle in bleach history if you ask me, powerful, emotional and eventually very satisfying. Thanks tommo big fan, keep up the good work mate! Congrats on the 40k btw!!!

I still remember watching it the first time.(yes I watched the anime before reading the manga) The setting and build up was amazing. But seeing the crucial moment was where it got real. I remember watching Ulquorria go Segunda Etapa and destroy Ichigo. And when he charged the Cero Oscures I was thinking "There's no way. He'll pull something. This is anime" And then I watched as it flew through him as I just had to blink in shock. It's not something a lot of Anime do. Back then or Now.

I still get a shiver when I watch this battle. The anime portrays it in such a way that the character that we all find relatable suddenly becomes something else, something sinister and alien, terrifyingly powerful and for me, seeing Ulqiorra so easily suddenly overpowered shows that true raw power in Ichigo, but the cost is so well portrayed that it feels both sad and thrilling at the same time.

I know I'm late to this video but fantastic job! I've been going through your videos everyday. One thing I wish would've been explored more is Ichigo's hollow powers through the end of the series. You do get that taste with his final bankai so maybe the anime adaption can explore it just a little bit further. If you see this can you share your thoughts? If you already have can you point me towards a video you've done on his hollow side?

What I think is a very interesting detail is in the design of Segunda Etapa; Ulquiorra states that he is the sole espada that achieved a second form and that even Aizen hasn't seen it yet. An interesting detail is the lack of the tattoo displaying the number 4 in his second release, further supporting the theory that Aizen may not have seen the form or played along with it. Even when Yammy transforms you see the tattoo change numbers, but not for Ulquiorra. Kinda makes me believe that he may truly have been the ultimate espada, just my 2 cents though

I agree with you, I don’t get how Ichigo kept hope in this fight when he knew no one could possibly come to his aid and actually help but he loses hope when he has all his comrades later on. This fight was raw as hell though, man was it sick. Great fight. Great dynamic between Ichigo and Ulquiorra; I actually liked their rivalry more than the one with Grimmjow. Ichigo and Grimm were very alike but he and ulquiorra were so different, it was great to see them with their different philosophies try to win out. Love how it’s the opposite of the SS Arc which theme was control and mastery while the theme of this arc was letting go and losing control, from suppressing the demon to letting it take over completely. It’s strange too how in a way Ulquiorra is the winner since he finds a sort of peace in his loss and Ichigo is affected very negatively from this point on because of this loss of control.

I almost feel like this is what weakened Ichigo's spirit, having come down to Ichigo's death and White's "takeover" planted seeds of doubt in Ichigo that grew into the despair later against Aizen/Yhwach.
@corruptangel6793
@corruptangel6793 3 года назад
Aizen was simply inhuman to Ichigo as he broke into the next realm of power. Ulquiorra was OP, but Aizen was something else, something more. Yhwach drove him to despair because for the first time ever, Ichigo was maxed out. There were no more powerups left so that despair was him giving up well and truly due to him understanding that this is his limit and it's still not enough.
@blinders6729
@blinders6729 3 года назад
I'm not debating that, what I am saying is that without this fight, I don't think Ichigo would have been so quick to dispair against Aizen. For the first time in the series his indominable will had been able to pick himself up and keep going and not only did he just get killed/humiliated in this fight, but also, his death and white's takeover of him ended up seriously hurting people he really wanted to protect. He'd went up against Aizen before and was soundly thrashed but for the sake of his friends and protecting people he carried on and fought the odds again and again to do what needed to be done. After this, however, we see him constantly doubting his power, second guessing his decisions, and backing down where he normally wouldn't. You see it with the Gin fight where Gin remarks that he is far less interesting this time around not even giving Gin a challenge.
