ULQUIORRA'S BACKSTORY, EXPLAINED - Nothingness and the Void | Bleach DISCUSSION

Pretty ironic that Ulquiorra only believes in his eyes, when he is a bat arrancar; an animal synonymous with being blind

All according to plan.

Another interpretation of his bloody arm is that he killed those other hollows. And if you look at the picture after the one of the arm, you see a few blood splattered on his face and neck. And those don't look like he injured himself, but rather he killed something else and the blood prayed on him. Also, in an earlier panel... doesn't it look like the other Hollows are closing in on him?

I interpret this as more of a look into how all hollows feel in general. They’ve all found some way to fill that void. Ulquiorra didn’t.. He couldn’t really make sense of his surroundings or his own existence and may have originated in Hueco Mundo rather than being a powerful soul that hollowfied and became a Menos. Thematically this works for Ulquiorra because he grows attached to his identity as a hollow a being whose emptiness is a defining characteristic of its existence, even keeping abilities that most hollows discard like his regeneration factor and lashing out at anyone who contradicts what he perceives to be his nature.

It's sadly ironic that he died just as he understood the meaning of the heart with Orihime's influence. He was easily one of the most interesting and badass Espada. Arrancar are typically violently power mad, others flat out reject Heuco Mundo's kill or be killed state of affairs, Ulquiorra embodies that world's dark despair. Still at least he got a trickle of light in those final moments.

Interesting how he believed in only what he could see, but ended up following Aizen, a man who could show him anything.

I like how ulquiorra basically embodiments. how hollow feel all the time which is emptiness.

Two things are certain in this world 1. Ulquiorra is the best Espada 2. MrTommo is the best Bleach RU-vidr

It just made me sad. All i can say is that, he's a perfect character kubo ever made.

I've always felt the chapter was more of a metaphorical representation of how Ulquirroa was able take control of the Vasto Lorde body and the tree represents Aizen and the Hogyoku giving Ulquirroa a purpose and meaning.

I don't think that Ulquiorra harmed himself in that panel to feel something. It looked like aftermath of a battle against other hollow. And it's not obvious that the other mocked him. It was just shown that they took notice of his differences. They could have mocked him or they could have gone "ooh that guy looks tasty"

Love Ulqiorra . One of my favorite anime characters of all time!!!

At this point in my life, I can actually find Ulquiorra’s emptiness relatable.

Damn, I actually feel bad for the guy. He had no friends or family, was deaf, numb, and walked around the place for King knows how many years. And he liked the tree because he saw himself in it; dead, empty, and meaningless.

Orihime was such a blessing, honestly. I dont doubt she treated everyone with respect and kindness even though she was being abused and tossed around. She not once resented them or blamed them.

I need to double check and confirm, but, CFYOW spoilers I think Ulquiorra was born in the old world, that is, before Shinigami Nobles/Soul King split the dimensions. Which may explain how unusual he was (born in a pit directly as a Vasto Lorde without going through the other stages, as well as having Segunda Etapa). Simply, the rules were different back when he was born compared to the more 'modern' Menos who have to evolve via cannibalism. If anyone can confirm this, that would be great.

Ulquiorra, from the moment I saw him was and will always be my favourite character in all of anime.

The thing with the dots actually have a deeper meaning. In his backstory there was a light dot surrounded by darkness which shows he was lost in the darkness, in this nothingness with only a white dot of light and feeling. And after his death or while his death he was surrounded by light and emotions with only a black dot left, representing his hollow hole and just underlining how much he has changed

7:25 it looks like Ulquiorra killed those black creatures, not that he wounded himself, since he also has blood on his face.

I was pissed when they didnt show his backstory in the anime. I felt lo Iike they did him dirty

Maybe adjuchas start ganging up somewhere eating each other in crowds, in a near bottomless pit, and whoever’s left becomes the Vasto Lorde, maybe if a particularly “empty” bunch of hollows group up sometimes they’ll eat each other until there’s no one left, and from whatever bits of blood, gore and spiritual energy reside in that place eventually they manifest as new, more powerful hollows, some of which may be Vasto Lorde (with an entirely new personality and identity, with little to no memory of what came before, the line about being pressed into existence by darkness itself made me think of how it could feel to be born with adult faculties and physique, whilst still being a newborn with just instincts to go by) while the others remain as just malformed shades, leading whatever’s stronger coming out of there kills all the others before leaving to do their own thing and leaving all that nasty hollow gunk just laying there maturing in the darkness, waiting to be used as breeding ground for more horrors. This could explain why some vasto lorde are more powerful/arrogant/depressed than others, as they were generated by stronger or a greater numbers of particularly nasty hollows. I could go on on greater details and complement with some stuff we seen on the other Espadas’ flashbacks but this is quite long already so, cheers.

Apart from Urahara, he's the best and most intriguing character in Bleach!

Ulquorria is easily my favorite Bleach character, and even after all this time he’s still on people’s minds! Gotta love Bleach. I wonder if his Second Release comes from him being a born Vasto Lorde? His Second Release is basically him becoming what he hadn’t been when he was a Hollow. Either way, there’s no question he was the secret strongest Espada. Aizen left Ulquorria to guard Las Noches because he knew Ichigo would eventually fight him. Why purposely plan for that confrontation and see if Ichigo was worthy of fighting him if you don’t set him up against your greatest weapon? Don’t even get me started on his character development! **Chef’s Kiss**

That's why he was so devoted. Aizen saved him from the void of nothingness and gave him purpose through his ranking as the secretly strongest Espada

I love an interesting back story. Some are meant to make you think others cry and some leave you unsure about many things. This one made me think and also unsure which I think was the point.

I like how Orihime is being a maid and being helpful to the enemy when she was KIDNAPPED TO BE USED AS BAIT.

Born in a pit with “Comrades” and curious, suffering even. He ends his journey in a mound instead of a pit, alone instead of with comrades, finding peace instead of suffering. I believe all these opposites is poetic and that the idea of this mound tearing him apart and damaging him (making him a natural arrancar) is a way of him achieving Nirvana, completing his journey as a hollow. Maybe this act of reaching Nirvana is kind of like a Minus soul (which hollows are minus) becoming a neutral soul or maybe even a positive in some way. Something to think about…

I find it funny how Ulquiorra kills ichigo twice when grimmjow couldn't do shit.

Ulquiorra actually became a natural arrancar after meeting with the mysterious white tree branch

What I find quite interesting is that after he came into existence. He can only BUT knows he should also have other senses.

In the very first episode it is also Ichigo who said to Rukia that he too if he doesn't see it with his own eyes he doesn't believe it.

Ironic that Aizen has the ability to manipulate everything Ulquiorra believes to be true

I hate how the vasto lords were hyped by Toshiro, then in the arrancar arc... Barely a bankai was used

I'm actually really upset that he never came back, even in a flashback. They seemed to just forget about him after the fight and it was a bit disappointing. Thanks for at least showing my favorite character some love. Was a bit refreshing because it's been so long since anyone has really talked about him

Not sure where, but I think it was implied that blood is his kin's; and that Ulquirra killed them in self-defence.

What i find cool about Ulquiorra's back story is that its an adaptation of a song: Moonshield by In Flames.

I think I get why ulquiorra didn't want to be human because of emotions are a weakness and something he sees anyone can manipulate, or maybe hates because of how horrible they are and the other hollows with he when his was born were nothing but guiltness pigs and human were in his point of view very selfish to not try to think what's best for their friends and family and be ready to fight so they won't get caught in the cross fire.

I can't say I ever loved this character to me he felt way too much like Byakuya 2.0 The whole nihilism angle was pretty cool though and his dynamic with Inoue and Grimmjow were pretty interesting and engaging. At one point I actually thought that he would be the one to rebel against Aizen with Grimmjow as the misdirect not for typical reasons but just a rejection of Aizen wanting ultimate power and to that extension purpose. It was never clear to me why someone like him would follow Aizen, like did he think Aizen would give him purpose? I didn't get what the end game was with him in that regard.

Am I the only one who thinks ulquiorra is one of the most underrated characters in anime or it's just me, see I used to think that he was your average emo anime villain who just have some complex, but as I look into the void of that is his world and what it's too him and his past, it made me wonder what happened to him when he died as a human that made him into a vaste lordeo it's that how you say it, anyway it might be a life of darkness's and sad and then wanted to be hollow that feels nothing at all, I don't think nothingness should be his aspect of death, tragic be a better fit for him. If you think about it I wonder if stark and ulquiorra could be friends in hueco mudo.

To be fair, Ulquiorra's Nihilistic World View isn't as bad as it seems. Perceiving something that you cannot see and what you can no longer or cannot really feel is what i believe to be alot of what we were at some point in our lives. For me, personally, Ulquiorra embodies what i would've been eventually if i had not found my own solace and the true meaning of what it meant to be alive, what it meant to have purpose.

Ulquiorra is my favorite Arrancer within the Espada he is intelligent and really strong. His character development is well written.

Great video... FYI in hueco mundo there is nothing to eat other hollows. Hollows are condensed reiatsu , which is delicious to them. Minor hollows do not need to eat, they get enough reiatsu to eat from the atmosphere

Ulquiorra was one of the Espada I wish had survived. His death was powerful, but I think he could have added something more to the series if he had lived longer.

For anyone who wish to see bleach as a rewrite that fix the problems that the original series had, please go see the throne of heaven.
