❤️❤️ I'm Kenyan. In 1997 I led the ICOC church planting into a neighboring country, Uganda. I was 3 years and 9 months on staff, 8 years as member (I left in 2001- twelve days before 9/11) then was embroiled in two years of trying to get leaders and staff to clear my name of false accusation as well as compensate me for time and income lost. Henry Kriete's letter when it came, hit really hard and suddenly I was not all alone.
Welcome to my channel! If you feel comfortable to do so, I would love to hear your story and share mine. My info is at ;hopeafterreligion.blogspot.com/p/contact-me.html
I just read the H.K. letter for the first time this morning. I was a part of the ICOC for 7 years. Becoming a christian, and with that also a member of the ICOC. I was a part of the church planting of OSLO Norway, seen in the first KNN video back in 94. I left the church in 98 after "hitting a wall" personally. I left the church in 98, but I promised God that someday I would be back, following Him and not any system, with the drive coming from the heart. It took me 14 years to open the bible again. I still have some friends (a few) in the ICOC that I rarely communicate with. I came back to the Stockholm COC in 2014, feeling that it had changed, just to leave it again 6 months later, seeing and experiencing that there were still important stuff missing. I stil felt that I including others were like "projects" who were to be "secured" in the Kingdom and then let alone, just like before. There are still stripes that are not taken care of, imo. As I now have a burning heart for the Lord, and not a "system". Me and my now wife (also former member of the ICOC) are very driven to be a light and form your hearts according to His will. God has a lot of grace and patience - that I have learned. When I was a member, I heard that people from other congregations said that "watch out for the ICOC members, they know their bible". Today, I see that there are so many things that we read past, not understanding God's (Yehovah's) greatness and the whole picture at all. We pray today, that YHWH will open our eyes to see clearer and to understand the times we are living in. Lift the lid of our religious shoe box and see. This off includes many christians and denominations all over the world. #SkywatchTV, #MichaelRoodTV (ARoodAwakening - channel), #Hagmann & Hagmann Report May YHWH bless you all.
I was in "leadership" and was accused of sin that I didn't commit during this time (right before the Kriete letter) I was treated extremely harsh, I left the ICOC right as the letter was exposed, it confirmed my reasons for leaving. I had my own convictions before joining the ICOC so my faith in God wasn't affected as it was with many. My goal now is to help present members to not forget the "Letter" because it will all repeat itself as it's happening with the ICC. I think the actual members truly want to serve God but most leadership continues with the crap Krete wrote about.
"Doing a 10 years to life sentence in the ICOC" LOL!!!! I'm going to use that! That's what it was, good, bad, or indifferent. Glad you got out. I haven't looked back, either. Much peace and success to you!❤
@@losingmyreligion654 1990 -2003 When the HKL letter exploded it just confirmed my thoughts that I'd kept to myself for at least 11 yesrs. I realised it's been 20 years since it was published, so I read it again over the weekend.
Omg!! Grew up in the ICOC and just finding these videos. I’m 10 years out and still healing. Just started a channel to talk about my healing journey, would love to connect with you!!!
The letter came out in 2003. I was rehearsing with he songleaders when it came out. The worship leader Chris Adams came in crying about it. Then all hell broke loose.
Jacob Ramseyer WOW! I left in 97 or ‘98? Anyway I never knew anything about all this. Everyone that I got back in touch with on FB won’t speak of it. I’d LOVE to know what happened, what it was like in that first hour, first day, first month, etc. Which city/state were you in? I was in Long Beach,Ca.
I want to thank you for unpacking this letter and the effect it had. I was part of the LACOC (Los Angeles Church of Christ, and the AMS (Arts, Media, Sports) Sector and was up close to Kip and his Family as our Sector was his Home Sector for a long while during the late Nineties. I was part of the Church from 1990-1997. I left isolated from my friends and community and it’s been quite a Journey of Healing. I still have a hard time hearing or reading the Bible due to the Spiritual Abuse of the ICOC. Grateful I found your Channel. 🙏🏻
Wow, he was dead on. I was in college at that time. So I "knew" about the letter, but didn't really read it all. As an adult now, I totally get what he means, in that snippet you just read. Galatians 1:6-8 let every man be accursed if they preach any other gospel....... Hello! Jesus is not the foundation of that church. Its all about man and control amongst other things.
I have strong mixed emotions while listening/looking at this video. Im from ICOC Philippines. Got babtized in 1993 and left (was counted out in 2010). I witnessed the rapid growth of the church, the "cruelty" of the system, the revelation (the HK letter), the confrontations and the reformations. That was a roller coaster of events and emotions. The leaders of the Philippine church chose to repent and listened to each disciple/member. Those who decided to forgive, stayed and they are to this day helping to build up the church. I feel sorry for those who were really hurt and left the church brokenhearted. Another big group of disciples/members do not want to accept the changes in the system. They find it lukewarm. They are now part of ICC. I personally spent my life in the church as my venue of my relationship with Jesus Christ. I was just inlove with what I was doing. Being part of the fired up campus ministry was the best!!! When I moved to the singles ministry I started seeing "irregularities" and began questioning my discipler and my immediate leaders. I kept hoping for changes but the hurts grow when my "disciples", friends and even my own family are leaving the church. :( Until I myself also left. The system was trully harsh and oppressive in many ways, but the soulful people I was with and the wonderful, honest and sincere talks/bonding with each other overweigh the pain. Thanks to the social media, we have daily "jubilee" of the faithful, the "fall-aways, en the returnees :) The bond remains the same.
This was heartfelt. Thanks for sharing. I do understand the duality of both good and bad aspects of our ICOC/ICC experiences. It's difficult at times to process how both can exist in the same space and yet we still need to remove ourselves from such a toxic culture.. Peace be with you on your journey.
@@losingmyreligion654 because love and hate are inseparable. We cannot identify one without the other. In each circumstance, the choice is always ours...and so the consequences of it. The peace gladly receive. Thank you! Same peace I send you
I was a part of the NYC church at that time but I was on vacation in London when the event started. It was at a leader’s meeting there. And the leaders called out the hypocrisy of especially Boston towards the London church and their expectations for them. It was incredible to see as these are things that needed to be addressed but at that time it was only the London church willing to speak out. This letter then followed. It was amazing to see everything go down as just a visitor to that leadership meeting from NY.
I joined in 1993 and left in 1997. I was in the Wichita Kansas Church and was a "Bible Talk Leader" and dating a girl who was also leading the Bible Talk with me. I went to the church to get permission to marry this girl and was denied permission and she broke up with me shortly afterwards. She married another member and they now lead the Oklahoma City Church. Was a very troubled time for me.
I understand. Sorry you had to go through that...Glad you're out, now. And P.S. please don't take this the wrong way, but you probably dodged a bullet. Imagine if you married her and you left. Thanks for sharing.
You should marry her. Don't ask permission from your leader, they are not your parents. It is your own decision. It is God gift for you to marry a woman. Not leader's decision. They are so robot. Insane. Thanks for sharing.
I remember the HKL. I was relieved to read it- at last someone called out the abuse and hypocrisy in the leadership. And, HK was a legend and couldn't just be dismissed as a "disgruntled member." Since the leadership spent so much time building themselves up and training the members not to question them, any effort to reform was squashed. And the pressure slowly grew until a small spark set it off. Glad to have left at the time.
You're right about that. They couldn't just dismiss him because he was a world-level leader. I remember reading it at our Bible Talk Leader's house. We didn't have internet, I don't think.
I joined the church in 1983 and once spent an afternoon in traffic with Henry. I remember when the letter came out and a sister came over and we wept and prayed and we're so grateful the truth came out! Ii appreciate your posts so much as I have an internal pain between the pain of the truth in scripture vs the truth of how it played out in real life living and also vs. the hypocrisy in some of the leaders.
I'm curious as to their state today. We were there from '93-2000 and bolted from there, just one morning we sat up and shared with each other- which was forbidden to gossip. We were kept in a box in ways. The leaders in the KC Church exhibited everything the H.K. letter said. I cannot believe that with such THEN problems, that everything is fair and correct there. Thank you for your post.
My wife and I joined in 1994 and left after the Kriete Letter in 2003. It took a good solid 10 years to fully reform my way of thinking and finally leaving Delphi forum, but my life is wonderful now. I feel badly for those who did not leave on principal. Because they had told their families they had found the One True Church. And to have to go back and admit they were duped is the ultimate pride. There are some real scumbags out there. Esp. in Houston. I hear Tim Huffman is "teaching" in a regular Church of Christ. Why anyone who knows his background would listen to one word he said is amazing. Jamie Ballard is a scumbag. I know for a fact (no speculating), they after the HK letter and during the uprising, there was a PowerPoint that was supposed to be played (and was) which was a summary of all of the members complaints. Well, there was a scuffle in the back of the church because scumbag Ballard made his OWN PowerPoint which did not include all complaints but was a dumb-downed version. But one of the elders stood up to him and said they would play the full PowerPoint.
I joined in 1998 the City College Ministry ( Harlem Ministry in NYC ). I get what you mean when you refer to what it was like back then. I only lasted a year there... This letter came out after I left in 1999. So I totally missed that memo.
I remember the City college ministry back then. We used to take the train from Queens up to the place the Harlem church used to meet on 111th, I think. The church was notoriously brutal in those days. If you see this reply, what happened after a year that did it for you? The control, etc?
@@losingmyreligion654 the invasive d-times, the overwhelming pressure, the depression causing rebukes or LoL getting laid out by leaders. , the loss of control over my schedule, the friends I lost. I did get closer to my family ( I had to try and fight for that ). The campus ministry was cool as far as the individuals go, ALOT of us had the same issues with the church. When I left, it was a little after they finally got that big church space on Amsterdam. We used to have services by riverside amphitheater. I remember walking a sister home from service (I was alone with her, that was also a no no ) She complained to me about her struggles with staying in the church, then I shared the same, 2 hour later, we were doing something neither one of us could tell our decipling partners about... that’s how I left. Freed by a woman lol. I visited after that. James and Joey were still heading things up there.
@@amjnyc79 I can relate! (LOL). Glad you're out. Thanks for responding. So many of us can relate to your pain and your experiences. It was a toxic culture of spiritual abuse.
I was a member in the NYC "Arts" Sector then. I remember the forums and I remember the services being all about discrediting that letter. I tried to get out then, but it took me another decade. Almost 4 years out now. I still have a hard time talking about that 17 years. It was so damaging. I actually still have the letter printed out and in a manilla folder.
Well, be proud of yourself for finally getting out. As is life, Healing is a journey, not a destination. I suffered with so much regret for not leaving sooner. Eventually it fades as you discover yourself and your purpose. Thank you so much for being here. Much love.
Wait-did you say Kip was ousted?! And BEFORE this letter came out? I was in the church in the 90’s,I left in ‘98. I never knew about the letter or the church breaking up for years until just a couple years ago. I have SO many questions!😩😩😩
He wasn't as much ousted as demoted, he and Elena were still in ministry in Portland. Of course that only lasted so long before he decided to go start up again. Couldn't stand to be under anyone else. I hope you still walk with Jesus :)
Hello the link above with the letter is defunct. I use the to have the letter in my email but my emails was cleared out. Anyone has a copy of that letter?I was part of that ministry when all this went down.
As an Ex ICOC member and few others along with me decided to obey Christ 100%, which is nothing but holding on to the Gospel, and the same is the command of ICOC - Mathew @-20. All I understood is the manipulation of the word ("teaching them to obey everything I have commanded") Here take note of the word I HAVE COMMANDED. Jesus commandments are found only in GOSPEL, which is neglected. Secondly nowhere in the GOSPEL Jesus talks about collecting contribution. Jesus has always insisted only in giving. Thirdly ICOC has double standard. 1. The BIBLE (for their convenience) 2. ICOC standard, as set of rules to be followed in the Church. Fourthly JESUS never asked us to gather under a constructed building. Church is comprised of disciples where they can even gather in a small room and worship Christ. JESUS has set a role model, ICOC follow the leaders instruction, where a true disciple need to follow JESUS. Mark @-20 no one want to obey it, (because it is difficult - you have to touch the sick, or drive out demons for which you really need to have a great prayer and fasting. There is much more to say.. any questions mail to aldrinedavid@@t
I know this question is very odd... how old was your leadership? Just a ball park loke in their 20s or older? Were there elders in place in the church or are you just calling him an elder because he had been there the longest?
I remember this. We were told not to read the letter because it was pornagraphy. So controlling. People were telling all after this letter thank the Lord. I left after this letter. A family member was part of Kip's right hand and he broke down and admitted to all that was exposed, he left with his whole family including myself and my family. My family member that was one of the leaders was told to sell all his homes and give the money to the church which he did, but thank the Lord that his wife kept a home for her parents and when they left the movement, he was able to get a hold of more homes by hard work. It's crazy all the brainwashing that took place & still is. I haven't paid any attention to Ki bt did listen to a recent message of his n RU-vid, he sounds like a madman and gives me the creeps. Thank you Jesus for freeing my family and extended family from that bondage!
Amen! Glad youre free in Christ! I had a little chuckle about the 'spiritual pornography' line, I remember that nugget being thrown about to shame anyone who would look online for info about the church, of course I was filling my boots with it over at reveal.org, lol, I decided to leave just as it was falling apart. Trusting on Jesus for my salvation everyday and studying the KJV instead of the New Insidious Version. God bless!
There's a scripture where it says, the letter kills but the Henry Krite letter exposed a lot of things that was going wrong... Judgement starts within the churches and out into the world. Its like the movie: the Girl with all the Gifts...and she gave the wolves in sheep clothing an open door or a way to lead... As soon as she left and went to Newbury, California to unburied her spiritual head from under Joshua Tree! They all scattered and were divided! Book: Ostracized: the power of silence! I left Icoc and window shop for a new church but eventually went back to my old church, SDA! Lastly it looks like Jesus is smoking out the stink of spiritual prostitutions: phantom thieves!
When a Christian mess up s/he will do at her/his level but when a Christian Leader mess up it will be in her/his capacity. By saying this we should allow ourself to understand that we are not perfect being. That is why we all need Jesus. When a leader make mistakes or fall into sin, it seems big. The whole world will talk about it. David is an example in the Bible. A king falling into adultery seems bigger than a subject would. Yes, they are in the limelight and when they make mistake or sin it is exposed. The sad part is you allow yourself to follow a different Jesus first by becoming a member of ICOC which you confirmed in your statement. No Church guarantee our salvation, this include ICOC. Unless a Church speak or teach against God or Jesus they are still a Christ Church. Difference in the doctorine here and there among the Churches which bring division and denominations is understandable. No one can prove that their doctorine is the only true one and they are the only True Church. Yes, Kip McKean may have pride or may have many other sins which he need to repent of but again let us not forget that he is a great leader and provided that he repent of his sins God will use him over and over just like any other sinners. Let us deal the issue with maturity and don't blame ICOC for his sins. There is no perfect Church and you will not get one even after leaving ICOC. Feel bad for what you all had gone through. Infact I became a member of this church much after Kip McKean was scrape from his leadership of ICOC. All of you who comment here, wherever you are, may God continue to use you and if there are people who left Faith because of the bad experienced I will pray for them as well. God bless!
Thank you. I became a member during Kip's time . I am still a member. It's not perfect here. But I doubt you'll ever find a perfect church. Hack, just check the church in Corinth. There was adultery, there was theft, there was racism etc but they were still a church, a new testament church for that matter. I did not join the church for people..
But it has changed a lot, I am a member and I can tell you things are no longer that way, at least not as a systemic practice. Obviously, in any structure made of humans, principles will be violated, including the church. And I am not denying it was a terrible thing that happened in the past. But it is not what the church does wrong but its capacity for repentance.
So sorry, but you cannot build a solid foundation on sand. You cannot call a cult a church. You can BELIEVE you are in a church now but you are in a reformed cult which wants to PRETEND it's a church.
yes, the ICOC is the first group Kip oversaw & then was fired from....so, he started another group call the ICC. If you want more info email me at danielleyoung41@ymail.com
