I made this video for a client who wanted to know exactly how the A5 get onto the A5 Trailer. The video itself is long and boring, but the A5 trailer isn't cheap, so I wanted to demonstrate the engineering behind it.
I used to work for a construction equipment trailer manufacturer and after seeing the design and features of the Icon trailer the price is reasonable for what it does, not bad.
This has got to be the coolest plane and trailer ever made for sport general aviation. I so wish I could go for a ride. I'm 68, and I would love to learn all about this plane so that I could sell them. :-)
Very informative but it would have been good to have seen the rear work on the trailering preparation, maybe with a second camera set up behind the aircraft.
I found a job that I qualified for, applied, interviewed and the offered the gig. I got a bunch of sales experience in order to sell planes though and then I got my license
Hey Buddy. Great video thanks. 3 Questions. Does this trailer have it's own battery? Is it a 7 pin electrical connection and what size ball hitch does it fit. Cheers for a great video.
1. Yes 2. Yes 3. Fairly certain it’s a 2” ball but it’s the only trailer I’ve ever towed If it makes the difference on a sale right now I’m happy to find out though
Hey Gary, any idea when new trailers are supposed to become available? I’ve been on the “top of the trailer list” for a year and a half. I’m excited to get one in my hands!
It’s been one unforeseen challenge after another getting these things built man, we’re closer than we’ve ever been right now and COVID is only making things more challenging in terms of supply chain. I definitely understand the frustration Kenny, if all goes according to plan, we’ll be building your trailer next month. So sorry to keep you waiting man, we’re so close on this.
@@GaryJamesKnight No excuse to not own one in Houston. Just look at the ground funny and it fills with water. Would be so fun cruising down the intercoastal to corpus of south padre.
Can you use the trailer to launch and recover the plane on a boat ramp or other natural boat launch areas? That would greatly increase the value of the trailer. Especially since you could probably DIY one for about half the price, possibly less.
It is amphibious, and I have launched and recovered using the trailer. If you can build it cheaper I will sell it, I don’t make any commission on the trailer.
@@GaryJamesKnight Trudat, maybe your company could sponsor your channel since you're doing a great job advertising the plane haha, nice video nonetheless👍
@@GaryJamesKnight Btw, you did it better than another guy who didn't keep a close eye when winching and the plane skipped off the track a bit, which made for a bit of drama haha. Nice video, I dunno how many times I've rewatched it lol. I think I've ran out of A5 videos to see on YT!
@@spendingtimetogether8428 haha! I hear ya, definitely could always use more. I’ve had my share of mishaps with the trailer as well, fortunately nothing that caused damage. *knock on wood*
@@GaryJamesKnight Didn't know much about the A5 before. Thought it was just another exotic little plane. But your video showed that it its very easy to handle and to store.
One thing to consider...what is the gross weight of the trailer with the aircraft loaded? If it exceeds 10,000 lbs. then you will need a noncommercial class B drivers license, need to check your states regulations to be sure.
Thanks, just so you know, we don't make a dime selling this trailer, so any cheaper and we lose money. If you can find a cheaper way to build it, lets talk!!

@@GaryJamesKnight thanks for the quick reply. I guess it is a matter of economies of scale and where it is being manufactured. Thanks for your great videos.
Gage Himes just saw your comment, it’s just a piece of plastic that’s molded to fit the space between the hole in the wing and the tail, it’s like 6”x8” and the road is a bumpy place so you definitely want that protection 💯
Giga Auriski Khatulistiwa unfortunately no, there are a few flight schools who have A5s that they do training with, but we only train people who are buying them.
MUITO LINDO AVIÃO , PENA QUE O CARA FAZ UM VIDEO PARA AS PESSOAS NÃO VER, COLOCA A CAMERA DE LONGE E QUEM QUER VER O SISTEMA DE DESMONTAGEM CONTINUA NA SALDADE
I’m trying not to spend time editing videos. Especially because Icon has someone on staff to do the polished versions. I just recorded this for a client and hit “upload”
Such a cool plane, but those prices man... My dad got an entire hangar for less than half the cost of that trailer. Heck, you can look at a good number of planes for the price of that trailer.
xpeterson I hear what you’re saying, but believe me, if we could sell it cheaper we would because we would sell more. Fact is, it’s expensive to build. A brand new C172 costs $429,000. A brand new Cirrus is $800k+. So unless you start comparing us to cheap planes that are cheap to build, we’re pretty competitive. Takes a lot less to buy a hangar than it does to build one new out of steel. I know we’re not overcharging for the trailer because we don’t make a dime on it.
Nice video for the most part. However, I have to take exception with you stepping "OVER" the winch cable, ESPECIALLY UNDER LOAD! This is NOT an acceptable or SAFE practice at all! If that cable snaps, it will slice you in half without anything to stop it at all! I was a recovery mechanic in the Army and was trained in winch operations. If you have to reposition yourself during the winch operation, walk around the REAR of the aircraft ONLY! Yes it's farther to walk but, it is SAFE. Also, do NOT stand or allow other to stand near the tongue of the trailer either. Everywhere from the point of the winch where the cable comes out to twice the length of cable pulled out in a 360 degree arc centered on the winch is the danger zone in case of a winch cable failure! Inside the tow vehicle "may" be safe but, keep in mind that the windows will not stop or slow down the cable much at all and can still injure or kill people there!
The plane only weighs 1080lbs and the cable is vinyl not steel, if the cable snaps it would sting but it wouldn’t even break the skin. Great advice, but due to the lack of weight/load the risk profile changes as well.
@@GaryJamesKnight Do you really think it's worth the risk instead of being safe about the operation? And if it hits you with one foot on each side, it'll do more than just sting even if you are lucky! LOL
@@dalemckenzie3223 same odds that the line would snap and the airplane roll me over while walking behind it. Everything has a risk associated with it. There’s not enough tension on that line to do anything more than tell an embarrassing story. I know because under load I can still push it to the ground without putting my body weight on it and plucking it under load doesn’t even generate a tone. You are absolutely correct and I agree with you that it’s not an example of a safe practice though.
Expats of Azeroth lol, too broke for the plane, I sell these I don’t own one, I recorded this on my iPhone for a client and I get criticized for it 🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@GaryJamesKnight HA!!! Not criticized lol, I'm just jealous, I really like these planes but it's just as reasonable to me as buying a super car, same price, same usefulness, doesn't stop me wanting one, sadly all the motorized $200k investments I make have to pay for themselves.
@@GaryJamesKnight Troll? Really? Definitely not a troll just extremely concerned about a marketing campaign for a plane that is targeting the wrong buyer.
@@tomtom6319 So you're saying that bad marketing changes how airplanes fly? I missed that section in physics class, please provide a source so I can study.
@@GaryJamesKnight good for him as it couldn't have been a hard fix concsidering the camera was at the distant front and all I saw was your ass at the back.
