Icon Derelict 1949 Mercury - EV Resto Modding | Fully Charged

Resto modding is a term derived from when a classic car is restored and tweaked for a more comfortable life in the 21st century. In other words, retain the old school aesthetics but update the drive train, technology and drivability to better suit modern roads and daily commuting.
Icon is a company born to build resto mod classic Ford Bronco and Toyota Land Cruiser trucks to better-than-new. Their Derelict series of builds explores taking patinated weather beaten classic cars like this 1949 Mercury and instead of fitting the expected fuel injected V8, dive head first into the world of EV hot rodding.
Not just that, but when the bonnet is lifted there is a visual spectacle greeting you - and one that at a flash tricks you into thinking it still has a piston power-plant.
Besides the beautifully solid UV damaged paint lies a detailed new chassis, modern new suspension, wiring and cabin creature comforts to satisfy a hot day’s commute is So Cal. Is this the start of making EV drivetrains look sexy as well as provide blistering performance? Jonny Smith thinks so.
We couldn't keep making the show without our supporters, thank you all!

I don't know who's behind the channel, but all the presenters here are well-known and respected presenters on british tv, for the last 10-15 years or more. Jonny Smith here is a motoring journalist and presented "Fifth Gear" for about 10 years, Robert Llewellyn presented "Scrap Heap Challenge" and also played Kryten in "Red Dwarf", and Helen Czerski (who did the fusion video a few weeks back) presents physics documentaries for the BBC. So this channel has some high level collaboration going on.

There is a guy on my street that converts classic cars for himself and sells a few. When he passes my house in his roadster with the top down I smile... even though it runs on gas. At the time Tesla was still a babe in the woods, but I see a few classics rusting and want them restored and made into EV's. FC has shown me that my desire for these classic gorgeous shapes that had character ( something car design is still sorely missing in every segment and price point for the most part) are being loving modified for the future. I love these episodes and the fact that we won't have to loose the bright spots of our past to enjoy a future.

I hope that we get to see it again when it's finished and the paintwork is fully restored. I would be sad if this ends up in a collector's private museum and rarely driven in public, a car like this should be reliable enough to be driven regularly, and it deserves it!

I totally agree...why some video producers seem to think sudden blurring and zooming in and out makes something look better is beyond me (its not in FC yet and I pray it never is).......its not realistic as in real life the brain acts like a gimble and smooths things out....whats wrong with a tripod?....just wants to make me turn off...its only in this vid in tiny bits and 95% of it was fine so am hoping its not the start of becoming more just for the sake of looking 'trendy' like the the Jason Bourne films awful use of shaky cam it just makes it unwatchable....great vid though and presentation as always.

Cool shop and cool car. I find the "Things were much better back in the old days" story tiresome though. Cars in the '40s -'70s were not well engineered or made to last. In my teens in the early '70s I wandered area junkyards studying cars and occasionally buying one to take home to autopsy. It was uncommon to come across a junked car with even 100,000 miles on the odometer. Cars were made of huge slabs of stamped steel because both steel and gas were cheap. Heavy body panels were the only way they could keep body-on-frame bodies relatively straight. Panels were fitted together with slots upon slots. Panel gaps were enormous. Engine tolerances were an absolute joke by today's standards. Yes, they were easier to repair. That was required because they so often needed repair. No, the old Merc could not pass a side impact test. I too am enamored by some '50s and '60s design elements and I'm glad to see these old cars being converted to EV. Especially so when I look at how they help give a desirable image to electric transportation. But that revisionist history "The old days were better" storyline that so many people willingly buy in to is unhealthy for our society in areas far beyond the expensive restomod scene.

There's an amazing video of a crash test between a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu and a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air that's worth checking out. The classic car just disintegrates, whilst the modern one would leave the driver mostly unharmed.
@Miata822
@Miata822 5 лет назад
@@drunkenhobo8020 And... it's rigged. The engine was removed from the Bel Air and other modifications made to make for a more dramatic video. Yes, any car from the '50s isn't safe by today's standards. They were incredibly deadly in head on collisions. I just thought it undermined the point of the video to fake it. I guess putting in calibrated dummies and adding up the damage points would make for a boring video.
@TheAndreArtus
@TheAndreArtus 5 лет назад
I love old cars, but you are absolutely correct in your assessment. Old cars survived an impact by killing their occupants. Energy from a collision must go somewhere: if it's not deforming the vehicle's body then it's likely deforming yours. Old cars leaked fuel, oil, and water and also required frequent maintenance way beyond what would pass today. It was not uncommon to put pans or cardboard sheets under even new vehicles to see if they would ruin your driveway. Creaks whistles and squeaks were audible over the engine noise. Initially derided as "Jap-crap" it was, somewhat ironically, the Japanese manufacturers that raised the standards (instilled by W. E. Deming, an American) of vehicles.

Thanks Bill, for the clarity...it's a dangerous game comparing across era's but the false memory undermines a lot of the ability to compare details and be more precise about what worked and what didn't and why. Well cars from the 90's and early 2000's can and have successfully made it into 500k+ miles territories. Not all of them obviously, but I know far more examples of high mileage E34 and E39 than E60. There are many W124 that made it over 1kk kilometres, but not the W201. Toyotas from early 2000's, barely ever break down. Ironically most modern cars have more problems with electronics (and sometimes it's just the wiring), rather than mechanics.

17:45 Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond stand up and take notice in another second as we hear Jonathan say, "All the way to TOP GEAR!" Woot! I really learned how to drive with a 1967 and 1969 VW Squareback, 65 air-cooled horsepower and the later model showed improvement with my removal of the exhaust system and heater boxes that were replaced with exhaust headers and single glass pack muffler from J.C. Whitney (36-40 mpg, no change in cabin heat, and my first set of Michelin radials 6.00-15 XZX also helped). Then 1984 and my first new car, a Toyota pickup, 25 years after that my second Toyota truck was built, my latest drive, and since I recently bought my third flux capacitor, I know where to buy more. Back to the Future!

I would love to see him EV an old Land Cruiser, one of the early two-door no-frills type like the yellow one Jonny was standing next to at the close. Great video!

Such a beautiful work of art. I'm honestly shocked at the skill of those involved in this artwork. Congrats to the owner being able to purchase this. I'll never be able to sadly 😢

I wanted to go and have my eyes checked after watching this, then realized the cameraman is the one who needs his eyes checked. Love the video, love the interview style and want to see more, please give the cameraman a hairnet and an apron and send him on his way.
