Good point. The camera guy never even showed the radiator when they were talking about it. I don't think ICON wants people to know everything they do about making this conversion. Remember, money was not a problem for whoever wanted this conversion. I'm not sure if they really accomplished much, since the problems in CA with electric supply and water shortages are all factors. Goof ball Gov. Gavin Newsom was telling people a couple weeks ago NOT to charge their EV's at certain hours, due to their self inflicted energy crisis. The woke crowd has succeeded in shutting down about 5 major power plants in the North West that supplied power to CA, and other near by states.

Jay and Jonathan just shot the breeze cruising all over the place in this stunningly beautifully built car. It runs so silent and comfortable, they never had to raise their voices once. And that low mechanical rumble actually fits the cars character. NOBODY will EVER see it coming in it's true form. I LOVE that. The interior work is simply stunning. Because it works together and nothing sticks out as odd. The entire car has a fifties hot rod vibe to it. It's perfect.

"Stunningly beautiful"? You've got a really weird sense of beauty. A shiny, completely restored 1949 Mercury -- or even a restomod of the same -- would be a thing of beauty. This thing just screams, "Nobody bothered to wash, wax or put this car in the garage for the last 60 years." I mean, who wouldn't want to own a car that the builder itself describes as a "derelict"? There are two good things about this car. First, nobody needs to know that you just paid at least $200K for this ugly junk when restored originals or restomods are available right now for a fraction of that price. Second, you can continue to leave leave this thing outside for another ten years without bothering to wash or wax it and nobody could tell the difference.

Cost was never mentioned in this video. They never mentioned what the distance was either on the car if fully charged. @@scottmeeker9971 Why would you say "I'm not too concerned about the cost of gasoline or diesel project cars? First, I know nothing about diesel project cars. Second, the reason Biden's poll numbers are in the toilet is because he has caused the spike in gas prices. CA gas prices are almost twice per gallon of what we currently have in FL. The prices of gas will continue to escalate if the US doesn't start producing more of it's own oil. The problem of the highest gas prices in US history, and the problems of electric shortages in CA are both man made. A good part of those problems are because government scraped perfectly good technology to suit their climate change agenda.
@tompastian3447
@tompastian3447 Год назад
@@1DEADBEEF1 Tell that to Joe Biden. Joe just tried to get the Saudis to keep the price low till after the election. The Saudis chose to stick it to Biden, and reduce US exports by 2 million barrels. I did mention in other posts under this video, that gas is at an all time high at the pump because of policy, not availability, i.e. Joe caused this problem. CA currently has an electrical supply problem, because over that past decades, their woke policies have shut down 5 power plants.

Conversely, there were 120,000 of these '49 Mercury coupes made. There are still a lot of them around today so its okay to take a couple of them and trick them out. In addition, it was an average car many people owned. But the Rolls, besides BEING a Rolls, are so few in number that the ones left should be preserved as stock. That particular vintage Rolls is almost like a work of art. As are most of them made before the '70's. Its not the type of car one should make into something it was never intended.

He starts talking battery tech, 400 volts, next time 800, independent 4wheel etc., Jay's eyes glaze over and he moves to trying to open gas fill cover. It is truly a beautiful car just left the way it is. Nice work getting this one on the road.

The seats and door trim are absolutely incredible and I wish we got a few more shots of them. Look like it could have easily come stock in '49 but actually a much more eye-catching design than factory.

Only do it on a classic where the engine was horrible or drive train has been thoroughly destroyed. I'm a massive BEV fanboy but I also love special engines. Some old cars should not be swapped, this does not include a dime a dozen 911.

My son and I have been looking for the last four years how best to create a personalized EV out of an eye catching classic with just the right pátina. The melted jellybean modern car is BORING. We came close to grabbing a 48 convertible Cadillac but felt daunted taking something so old and modernizing it without breaking the bank. I lust after how they’ve done this old Mercury. Bravo! Truly, an icon.

Shoulda put it on the lift. I wana see that drivetrain. As a "petrol head" i still love my old manual cars but know electric will be faster if already isnt. This is resto mod electric like it should be. The noise ok electric is great if u amplify the gear and motor wine its still cool

I think classic conversions has a GIANT FUTURE! Outdoes Tesla on cool, BY FAR. Some companies doing conversions, crate the original engine, and related systems, and the conversion is fully reversible. Makes a lot of sense. I'll bet many end up selling the engines off. All crated up, and ready to ship... Also, a way to help the seller defray some of the conversion cost.

I also think such a future could be very appealing to anyone who appreciates old things, and, because of the freedom from ICE complexity, not just be limited to car enthusiasts. I am hopeful I can steward my old 2003 convertible corvette well enough to avoid the crusher, and , although I won't live to see it, one day in the far future , when battery or systems technology has advanced far enough to not screw up the car, it will be converted to run as modern , and continue to bring usefulness and joy.

'Crazy 'Bout the Mercury'. K.C. Douglass, 1952. Ward's a creative genius. Love that Icon builds could blockbust MOMA but live cruising the PCH. Understated, detailed timeless beauty + engineering. [What happened to American auto design? To abandon all that wonderful WWII airplane design & voluptuous solidity seems like willful incompetence.] This masterpiece renews a life affirming love affair with the American automobile. iViva Icon!
