It's funny to me that "I want to be a barbarian," is a player desire, rather than something like, "I want to be strong enough to knock down trees," or, "I want to wade into brutal brawls and collect scars like trophies." Classes are just archetypes that include cool things we want to do. Multiclassing exists to let players do things that aren't bound to a preexisting class, but a new custom one.

This video provides the answer for those of us who dislike the prescriptive feeling of D&D 5E classes. I love the idea of ignoring the prescriptive “level ups” and instead talking with your players to ask, “What will make you feel that your character has grown and become more capable?” Another commenter mentioned that this is the root cause of players wanting to multiclass. They want character growth that is personally meaningful rather than prescriptive. Bravo!

I have just picked up the books this week after watching you for a few years. And you sold me a toolbox and supplies, not a prefab and an instruction book, and I love it. I also think this would make a great intro to rpgs for kids, newbies. Thank you for a great product.

The open-endedness of ICRPG really threw me off to begin with. After spending a couple months with it, this has become one of my favorite systems. You say it's the type of game for creative types, and I'll say that ICRPG has made me become MORE creative in my approach. I love this game. Thanks for making an RPG that's just plain fun and ENCOURAGES having fun!

ICRPG gave me the energy I needed to go back to some projects I had anandoned. It's so imbued of the DIY spirit it just propels you to take things in a more hands on approach. People who go to it looking for a more traditional RPG will read it with the wrong eyes.

Love the idea of loot providing the stat boosts, providing abilities, etc. I'm thinking of Nat 1s to weaken gear until they break or become unusable. Also, just got my copy of icrpg master. i like to have in my system a set of traits, some sort of one-word descriptor of a thing about a character. for instance, if my character has a trait "scarred" you can have a slight advantage in an intimidation check, or the master can give a slight disadvantage on persuasion. now, traits are fluid, that means that in some occasions you can give or remove traits to the characters (you can also make a vote between players, if someone is worthy or not for a trait during a campfire event). so yeah, i totally agree with a system that doesn't have levels but only dynamic stuff that define characters' choices

You had me at the idea of experience not equaling more hit points. I understand why mechanically that works, but the idea of super powered septuagenarians running around always seemed off. Experience doesn’t help you take a bullet better. Unless you Teddy Roosevelt. All rules bend around him.

I’m getting TONS of use out of the loot tables in my normal 5e game! It’s fun to offer original compiled items and spells that my player’s don’t know or expect. Such a beautiful “toolbox” to use in ANY homebrew diy game! Love it!

I only came across ICRPG recently and it looks pretty cool, though I have to admit that the "progression through loot" approach doesn't thrill me. In essence, it says that a character is only as good as what they carry. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it makes more sense to me that an amateur pilot would become a skilled pilot, then maybe a stunt pilot, rather than staying an amateur who simply moves on to better planes that fly themselves. Or to put it in superhero terms, I like characters like Daredevil who rely on skill more than Iron Man, who could be anyone who puts on the armour. I like the character to be special. Then again, I also don't need a lot of progression, becoming a demigod. That was always a tumoff in D&D. It can be a tricky thing to balance.Personally, I like to gradually build characters wide and deep. But there are a number of things in ICRPG that look appealing so I may end up giving it a try.
@Runehammer1
@Runehammer1 2 года назад
yep. ICRPG has 'skill' style progression too if desired... even branching ability trees and the like. email me
@clintfockler1113
@clintfockler1113 2 года назад
I’m with you, Craig. For RPGs I prefer a gradual progression of character skills mixed in with a small amount of special loot. The ICRPG progression is more of a wild roller coaster ride up, down, and side to side based on the loot characters acquire. Conan becomes Gandalf becomes nobody because they lost their gear. But don’t let that one progression element scare you away from the many many absolute gems in the core mechanics/system of the book. It is a simple task to modify the progression to what pleases you and the latest Master Edition includes class-based ability milestones you can use instead of loot. Hank says it over and over…DIY! I think my preferred fantasy blend would be the ICPRG core system, OSE progression with 3 or 4 class-based skills added in, and a simplified version of the spell system from Dungeon Crawl Classics. And don’t forget ICRPG gives you 5 different genres/worlds to explore and new monsters to encounter all using the same simple core mechanics. It really sparks the imagination.
@jcraigwilliams70
@jcraigwilliams70 2 года назад
@@clintfockler1113 for sure. Like I said, there are many things that I really love here. I will just have to adapt things to my own style. The "Ever Stronger" milestone on its own indicates the character is progressing in terms of their inherent ability. It's things like Weapon Gem that don't make a lot of sense to me (add a gem to your sword and it now does extra effort) unless we assume everything is magic. I think for something like that I would instead say that the weapon itself is finely crafted, providing the bonus. In other cases (Path of Iron's Mark of the Falcon) the item is clearly magical, but if it was being used in a science fiction setting, it may change from being just a symbol to some kind of cyberware that inhibits the user's ability to feel pain, thus making CON rolls easier for them. Or something like that. I don't want to sound like I am totally against loot-- I am not. But one of the many reasons I had issues with D&D when I played (years ago) was that a level 5 fighter only differed from every other level 5 fighter in terms of their stats and loot, and the stats were a relatively minor difference. This made the character semi-irrelevant because you were, in essence, just playing their equipment.

At the risk of stating the obvious, this sort of discussion is VERY useful to explicitly state in the rulebook. Or, at the very least in the interests of space, mentioned in the book with: "You may be wondering about character progression... this is deliberate, here's a very brief explanation, check out my RU-vid vid for more." In the internet age I can't imagine a single buyer being too upset by links to more, free online game-related info. It's always crazy to me how many games think nothing of publishing 200 pages of spells, 200 of monsters, and yet not 5 pages on WHY certain design choices were made. I don't know if the D&D 5e rulebooks explicitly lay out the rationale and gameplay implications for bounded accuracy, for example. (5e has a big enough player base that such discussions will emerge in online forums regardless, but most games don't have that luxury). It would go a long way toward the inevitable "this is different from what I'm used to and therefore it must suck."

The Lord GM giveth and (s)he taketh away. What you're talking about here sounds and feels much more like AD&D mentality - a system that sometimes considered the monsters and challenges over the benefits for the PCs. That's a lot more appealing to me as an old school DM.

Man I just stumbled upon ICRPG a week ago and ordered my hardback, but this video got me so pumped to start a campaign and roll some toons. I really like your thoughts on progression. One thing that frustrates me about D&D is the difficulty in managing power level and a huge spell list as you work through a campaign, and this system seems to handle that well.

Mages and priest have to fight and take other actions like everyone, if their best stats are in INT or WIS some of those tasks would be harder to achive. Beside that there is spellburn ( pg.80 corebook) and backfire (pg.47 corebook). Also bare in mind that spells use loot slots and you have only 10 slots for equiped loot. I haven't played yet, I'm reading the corebook for second time before DMing a session, so there might be something else that I'm missing.

I believe the system is widely tested so everything should be balanced. Anyway after playing if anything doesn't make much sense to you just change it. I don't like the concept... It feels like the DM has all the power and can take everything characters worked for in a second. Even more, there lacks the feeling of BECOMING the hero instead of being one just because you found cool gear. Sure, being too powerful can get boring, but then you can eiter TPK or postpone the campaign and start from a lower level... I'm not saying it's bad, just not for me I guess..

Gary Gygax understood this concept when he created D&D. Items made the character unique and failing a saving throw vs a spell could set them back, but made progress much more dynamic. Undead draining character levels also had this effect.

Great point. There's a lot of subtle genius in the original rules. Another aspect that springs to mind is the notion that all hit dice are re-rolled when you level up, so that hit points could go down when you level up. In my mind it accounts for long-term illnesses and injuries that aren't explicitly included in the rules.

DnD may be written from the players POV but, in my humble opinion, it does it in a very railroaded way. I absolutely don't like the character development system with fixed features on certain levels. I started playing Pen and Paper RPG with Vampire the masquerade, where you can buy whatever you want for your XP. And I don't like the magic & combat system because it feels more like a tabletop tactical war game, where the rules are more important than the story.

Just started reading the ICRPG rules and I'm trying to understand how loot works for a modern(ish), sci-fi or horror setting where the heroes are not exceptional. I mean, they're not carrying magical items or int he case of a horror setting like Call of Cthulhu where magic can be dangerous for players to use, I don't see how this works. Other than that, i think its a very clever, fun system.

Interesting idea, but I've always disliked parts of D&D such as looting the bodies of kobolds or slime fungi, and selling away the +1 sword your father gave you b/c you randomly found a +3 mace, was kind of cheap. One of my favorite parts from Lodoss War is when Pan declines a new set of armor, but acquiesces to accept a new shield as he hadn't used one before.

I have a hexblade warlock player in my group who's patron is her master's rage and vengeance manifest as her sword. I treat some battles as milestones for her sword. At first it was kind of s cursed weapon, then a later big battle made her "control the rage" betterso the curse went away, then she was able to harness it so it added an ability to the sword. You are the DM so you can make the idea of "loot" be anything you want!

One problem my group has is that they are newer, with fluctuating players and game dates. Because of this I run a lot of one shots, and try to link them when I can. Everyone wants to make these epic characters but none know how to navigate higher level pc's, so they end up making this legendary sorcerer who is lv.1, or 2 and can't actually do that much. I think your loot and stat progression will make it simple for everyone to make the pc they want with very little baggage to keep track of!

When I´m DMing I always come up with a completely new system cause it´s much easier for me remembering rules that are plausible to me. So I keep the number of rules down to a bare minimum and off we go. Supplemental Material like a Monsters Handbook or one for loot and treasure or for spells come in handy so I don´t have to reinvent the wheel. My players are always free to let their character freely develop and I came to the conclusion most of them just hate it. They want to go through spell lists and compare stats and damages and whatnot. They lack the inspiration of creating something original. As a result I don´t DM that often and as a matter of fact I don´t roleplay as much as I´d liked.

put limitations..if my friend died I wouldn't steal all of his belongings..It would suck!I'd bury them with their "loot"..maybe I would keep one small thing (ring,amulet..etc) just for remembering them..besides you can't carry too many things after all!

That in no way reflects how adventuring works. Maybe they are not friends. Maybe the just met each other. More importantly, are the mechanics of the game broken or am I misunderstanding something?

or you can go the other way saying that every artifact only works for the specific character..

if your wizard has a rod that fires magic missiles doesn't necessarily means that works for others too..I'm just giving you some tips on how you can bypass the problem..If you don't like them find your own..but there are solutions..find what works for you better
