This is by far the best Documentary on Ida Haendel's amazing career I've found on RU-vid. I admire her beyond words both as a virtuoso Violinist and as a Human Being. What would have become of her if she hadn't had the love and support of her family? Love is as important as talent. What would have happened to the whole family if Nathan, Ida's father, had not fostered her career, become her music agent and travelled to London during WWII? Her immense passion and talent for music saved her life and that of her loved ones . Dearest Ida, may you rest in peace... @violinviolin, thank you very much indeed for sharing this extraordinary Documentary with us all !!!!

I miss her a lot already. Thankfully, she left behind such a legacy - even here on RU-vid with her violin/piano recital performances in Miami and elsewhere in her older years - that she's impossible to forget. There was just absolutely no other musician like her. One of my teachers said, "She played EVERYTHING well." A true violinist's violinist.

Incomparable, inimitable, and always uniquely compelling and enchanting, Ida stands forever among the great violin artists of all time. I’ve always loved and admired this beautiful lady and treasure the several times I met her in Miami. Ida, you’re always in our ears, our minds, and in our hearts.

Great person .. Magnificent stories teller -- still using the childhood Polish language phrases f. Ex . " buciki " ( little booties ) or " mamusia " the sweetest description of how she called her mother -- There are few of the videos in which she described her family --life in Poland 🇵🇱 -- I watch them again and again -- FASCINATING !! Absolutely great lady ;; smart , sincere and very friendly --- Admire her as one of the greatest violinist , teacher , and great human being --- ❤

Not only a great virtuosic violinist, she was a superb musician; after all, she was taught by two giants, Carl Flesch & George Enescu.

Pro cellist here. Wondering if any violinists out there could discuss her left hand technique, especially the way she uses her thumb which to my eye seems to move independent of her hand and sets up for upcoming shifts. I think Geminani discusses this sort of thing in his treatise on violin playing. Thanks.

It's a lot because she plays without a shoulder rest and puts more of the weight of the instrument in her hand than those that play with one. The thumb and fingers sometimes move independently because without squeezing tightly with the chin, the violin would fly out. :) Depending on the notes or desired outcome of sound, you can either shift the weight to your collarbone and chin by quickly tightening down to let the left hand move freely, or you can move your thumb and fingers independently to 'walk' down the fingerboard. A lot of modern players don't really use this technique too much if they've played with a shoulder rest their entire life. Of course you can also do the 'pull the tablecloth' trick by moving your left hand down really quickly while loosening the left hand's hold for a split second to shift down with both the thumb and fingers at once.

I really wish that they had taken this documentary and separated out the commentaries while she is playing. I want to hear her playing. I don't want to hear their words until after she's done. I hate it when they do this stuff and it's everywhere now. Everybody thinks there has to be music going on in the background while people are talking. Well, if the music's going on, you can't necessarily hear the words, and vice versa. They need to stop being stupid this way and separate it out. I want to hear Ida, not a bunch of talking heads. I don't have a copy of this recording.

She does not appear to use shoulder rest/pad--not even under the gown--
