This summer I spent a month driving across the entire state of Idaho. I experienced 400 foot white quartz sand dunes that span 20 miles, hiked into north Americas deepest river gorge, climbed 10,000 foot peaks in mountain ranges that never seem to end, photographed waterfalls that give Niagara a run for its money, drove through bright green and vibrant yellow farmlands, and enjoyed 3,100 miles of beautiful rivers in a state that holds the most contiguous wilderness area than anywhere else in the US outside of Alaska. Idaho is hands down the most outdoor enthused state and has one of the most diverse landscapes of anywhere I have visited over the last year. Contrary to popular belief, and even though Idaho is responsible for the production of 1/3 of America’s potatoes, the state offers much more to see than just fields of potatoes. Idaho is made up of nearly 34 million acres of public land, that’s over 60 percent of the state! One word to describe Idaho, “Wild”.

First off, thank you for all the positive feedback! All drone footage was flown in accordance to FAA rules and regulations! I have had a few people contact me about the wild life scene and I just wanted to clarify that I used a Dji Mavic Zoom and the footage was cropped/zoomed in 5 to 6 times in post. The drone was not flown directly overhead or relatively close to the animals! I'm sorry if it seems like harassment at first glance, that was not my intention and not something I promote.
@MatthewSaville
@MatthewSaville 4 года назад
I don't believe it. The last clip of animals clearly shows the wide angle perspective of a very close-up vantage poin; the bodies of the animals have a strong, obvious visual direction towards a vanishing point similar to a keystone effect of any straight lines. You were clearly very close to those animals, and it's pretty clear that they're running from your drone. The thing is, you'd be just as popular without those last couple close-up clips. Re-edit the video to only include the truly distant stuff, and set a good example of how to behave with technology in the outdoors.
@drewsimms

@@MatthewSaville Those scenes were shot with the dji mavic zoom! You can believe what you like, I'm just telling you how I achieved those shots.

Matthew Saville at least we are having an open dialogue instead of deleted comments. Those who own and operate these devices should be exposed to comments like these so they can think before they act unethically even if Drew may or may not have with this instance. I guess what I question is how does one come upon a herd of animals running and capture it with a drone like this unless it was you found a herd of animals and regardless of how close the drone was the animals picked up on its presence which is unnatural causing them to flee due to perceived danger. I have a hard time believing that the animals were running like this prior to a drone being flown behind and overhead but what do I know? I’ve never taken my mavic and flown it over a herd of wild animals before.
@MatthewSaville
@MatthewSaville 4 года назад
@@27777BigRedBarn my rule of thumb is, if weak human ears can hear a drone from really far away, then most wild animals can probably hear it from way farther. Amd they don't have the advantage of knowing what it is, so they're likely terrified of the sound even from very far away. The bottom line for me is the perspective is clearly very close. Legal or not, disclaimed or not, it shouldn't be done and it definitely shouldn't be shared for thousands to see.
@MatthewSaville
@MatthewSaville 4 года назад
@@drewsimms I believe what I like because I understand perspective and vanishing points. You can't fake a vanishing point and perspective with a zoom or post-production. Look closely at the animals in the last animal running clip. You can tell how close the camera is by looking at the animals on the left and right edges. It's too close. You may have used the Zoom, but you're too close either way. Re-edit the vid without those last couple close ups. It's a hassle, but it's the good example that social media needs right now...

"...largest contiguous wilderness area.." that's Federally managed. You need to swing back up to NY and check out Adirondack Park. It's 6.1 million acres in size (three times larger than Frank Church) making it the largest state parks in the US. It may not have 10,000 foot peaks, but it can still be challenging (just ask any NYS Forest Ranger or SAR team)! :)
@drewsimms
@drewsimms 4 года назад
I was just up in the Adirondacks this past fall. Hit it at peak color change! Such a beautiful area
@roosa68d
@roosa68d 3 года назад
You need to look up the definition of contiguous. A contiguous wilderness area has no roads. Adirondack Park contains several wilderness areas separated by roads, the entire 6.1 million acres is not a contiguous wilderness. The largest contiguous wilderness in New York state is only a little over 275,000 acres, tiny compared to the Frank Church and dozens of other large wilderness areas in the west.
@ericsvalland4417
@ericsvalland4417 3 года назад
@@roosa68d You need to re-read my comment, as I did not state that the Adirondack Park is "contiguous". I only stated that it's the "largest" "state" park. But, if you're going to throw roads into the mix, yes the Adirondacks do have roads, but in looking at topographical maps, and a quick search, Frank Church does have 32 forest service roads within its boundaries. They may not be paved, but they are still roads non the less. Also, again I stated that the Adirondacks are the largest "state" park. Frank Church and others you refer to are all "Federal".
@roosa68d
@roosa68d 3 года назад
@@ericsvalland4417 your comment starts out saying "largest contiguous wilderness" that's Federally managed then you bring up Andirondack Park. So yeah you did imply that it is contiguous. There are no roads inside the Frank Church or any other Federally designated Wilderness. There might be forest service roads along the borders or old roads that are closed inside the boundaries but you can not drive in Wilderness areas, period.
@ericsvalland4417
@ericsvalland4417 3 года назад
@@roosa68d the original poster states in the video, the the Frank Church Wilderness is the largest park. Period. My first sentence corrects/clarifies that it is the largest "federal" park. The next sentence (notice the period after my first sentence) I "recommend/suggest" the original poster visit the Adirondack as it is the largest "state" park.

@@drewsimms The filming was fantastic. As an Idaho native and lifelong resident, I cringe at these kinds of movies because we are losing the beauty at an alarming pace, but I also appreciate seeing it documented. As an avid outdoorsman, there are plenty of parts of this beautiful and rugged state that I will not see in my lifetime. Regardless of your intentions to not harass wildlife, it appears that you were following them - your drone appears to turn with them rather than letting them be. In the interest of the movies you make and hopefully continue making, I urge you to be mindful of your intentions versus the perspective of those watching.

@@drewsimms I am new to your channel and have really enjoyed your videos so far but I was definitely disappointed when I saw the video with the pronghorn. I can see your point that you weren't close to them because you used a drone with a zoom lens and cropped in your footage but they were obviously running from something and I have no doubt it was your drone. You didn't just happen to be filming the herd as they ran flat out across that meadow for no reason. Regardless of whether you thought it was close to them or not they felt threatened enough to run from it. I have seen elk run from a drone that was over 200 feet in the air. I am a Conservation Officer in a western state and if this had occurred in my state I would likely be issuing you a citation with a hefty fine for harassing wildlife. I am sure my colleagues in Idaho would feel the same way.
