One of the most painful things about the manga grinding to a halt is never knowing whether Guts truly was battling against fate and the Idea of Evil, or if his rebelling and survival were also parts of the grand design
@giovanniluisbarrantesl9563
@giovanniluisbarrantesl9563 2 года назад
That's a good thought!! Guts said that he is a 'struggler' and opposes destiny(see chapter 91 "Vow of retalation) However, the idea of evil as the video says 'he' controls everything the collective conciousness and the destiny but not humans' willingness and decisions at all because Guts is a clear example of that but sometimes is confusing because thanks to his own decision Griffith went down as we know when Guts fought with him to leave the hawks by pursuing his own dream but as we know it is part of the causality and The Idea of evil plans and God hand plans. Contrary to that, Farnese, Serpico, and the group decided to follow Guts because they saw his willingness to survive against the evil, except casca because she is not in conditions to decide until she recover his 'mind' and we don't know what she will decide now. In few words, The Idea of Evil doesn't control everything, I would say 10% is for Guts decision and willingness, also, Moonlight boy decides to be with Guts and Casca. In the chapter 142, Skull Knight told Guts that he is a fish that can make waves in the water and he knows about causality and I think he may know about idea of evil and he bets an occassion when this world and the darkness will be united it is a little moment when there's no control but he tried that when he attacked femto before the world collides but failed and Femto told him that he was waiting for him and that is the interesting of Berserk because there are no tricks or hacks to kill God hand easily but just we know that they are weak against magic and dragonslayer but as we know, Dragonslayer creation is controlled by causality but in Guts hand, there's a chance to defeat the God Hand and Idea of Evil. Sorry if it's too long.

@@giovanniluisbarrantesl9563 that was a long comment and was good but the Godhand isn’t weak to magic or the Dragonslayer. In fact we don’t know any weaknesses they have, if any. No one except Griffith and the Godhand would know about the IoE
@RisingJericho
@RisingJericho 2 года назад
If anyone's wondering, my primary trail of thought for this is, even though Guts did survive the Eclipse, he was also instrumental in the reincarnation of Femto to the human world. So is he really an outsider to the forces of Causality as Skull Knight makes him out to be?
@whitedragoness23
@whitedragoness23 2 года назад
I don’t think he was full part of the grand design. Sometimes he was swept into the currents of the grand design but he was able to break the current and swim a different direction. Skull knight knew guts would be participating in the ellipse but the skull knight broke into the stream. Griffith tried to control the process of making a new body and wanted to eliminate emotions but the demon child wasn’t supposed to be there but Griffith was the one who corrupted the child by his “actions” so his emotions costed him his perfection. I think guts is fighting against the fate destiny and he has some wins and some losses, but it’s a struggle and seems like a almost no win situation.

The Idea of Evil is possibly the biggest reason that Miura dying is so depressing. I've always felt that when he fully explored this concept and brought everything to its conclusion, I would straight up learn something...idk...something deep and insightful about humanity that I've never thought of or that I have thought of but could never put into words. Basically, I really feel that Berserk says something spiritual about the human condition in such a unique way and now we'll never know what masterful words Miura would have written when revealing everything about the idea of evil and the godhand.

The Idea of Evil is the most Lovecraftian concept of the series. It is an unimaginable, intangible force given a physical manifestation that is beyond comprehension, but being given a tangible form made it too much of a known-unknown antagonistic force of the series that did explain too much too early. I would have liked to see Miura revisit this lost chapter during the climax of the series, even if were to be republished as a dedicated flashback chapter, including its title being "Part 2" to draw readers back to the first chapter where it picks up from.
@DIEGhostfish

I don't think it's truly lovecraftian. Well, it is and it isn't. Lovecraft usually focused on things well beyond humanity that did not care for us at all Causality causing misery on its own fits, but as an entity the "Idea of Evil" is almost, well it's Humanity trying to cope with the "Lovecraftian" indifference of nature to us, and our own moral failings and in their efforts to create a scapegoat, causing the birth of something that is *deeply* concerned with humanity and the intentional creation of our misery.

You can tell Miura really knew what he was doing philosophically in creating the Idea of Evil, because instead of doing the ignorant “what if God actually evil???” Thing he retooled the existence of the supreme divine being from being the creator like God (who, due to His very nature as the origin of all existence, cannot be evil) to instead being the created, made by the desires of mankind. Eh, he's not the first to do that. "We've created our own gods" has been a thing for a while, it's honestly how most fiction seems to be treating the concept of the divine for decades. But this "god" this Idea of Evil is like a scapegoat that truly grew into what we were blaming it for, that's an interesting twist on things.

I think the weakness of the idea of evil is that it's born of humanity's negative desires and need to have something to blame the cruelties of the world on. As such, humanity also has something benevolent that they can (and do) give thanks to for the good that also happens. The Idea of Evil clearly isn't malicious, it doesn't even seem active. It's just doing what humanity wants it to do. I suspect that's why Miura decided to omit that character and the chapters featuring it, because he wanted to expand on the idea a bit more.
@DIEGhostfish

Well, we humans are all too inclined to credit purely ourselves or maybe those close to us for our happiness. That's why there might not be an "Idea of Good" in Berserk's universe, at least to the same degree as the "Idea of Evil"
@someoneelse3456
@someoneelse3456 2 года назад
Perhaps the Idea of Evil can be beaten. Not physically fought or slain, but conquered through changing humanity. If humanity somehow was to change; to start accepting responsibility for their own actions and to also accept that 'negative things' do just happen, there wouldn't be a need for the Idea of Evil. The final battle of Berserk wouldn't have necessarily been a physical one, but more so ideological as Guts and Griffith pit their opposing philosophies against each other.

Really well explained, bro. Made me consider some things about the place of The Idea of Evil in the world and lore I hadn’t before. I also think there is no Idea of Good because people would be more likely to attribute the good in their lives to their own efforts, unlike the bad.
@darkhobo
@darkhobo 2 года назад
My theory, Its all very Jungian. There is an Idea of Good, but unlike the Idea of Evil, it isn't separate and in a place like the astral world. Its inside people. Ill explain. The idea of evil is the parts of our collective unconscious that seeks someone to blame for their misery. Then the idea of good is the parts of our collective consciousness that seeks to leave the world a better place. The easiest way to explain it is to say that we saw the "Idea of Good" before we saw the "Idea of Evil" but we didn't know what we were looking it. The Bonfire of Dreams is the foil to the idea of evil. People sharing their individual dreams making those different dreams become one collective dream of a better future. Back then Griffith was stealing that fire from the band of the hawk. Using his charisma to turn their collective dream into his dream. But if someone could say, influence the minds and dreams of people directly, and got all of humanity together in one place, you COULD use them to defeat the idea of evil, by giving them a shared dream. Just saying. Griffith is setting up his own downfall
@thegk-verse4216

To their own efforts ? The people in this world are constantly talking about gods, luck, blessings and whatnot to explain abondance of good. It is not possible to think about the origin of good and evil in two separate manner, it's the most inconsistant a thing can be. People believe in fate, and it goes both way, the problem is that it goes in one way more than the other, hence the name. I think the idea of evil does the two.

Isn't that so interesting yet hurts your head to put into view. That negativity (evil, suffering, etc) accumulates and lasts in such a thick and heavy way that people could end up causing the creation of an entity that represents the collective ideas of evil. Yet good, goodness is always depicted and given to us as a thing that comes to us, pops up in a person or figure and their deeds and nature, and then just fades. The "idea of good" exists physically, through people and ends when they do.

@@Lucas-hd4st The idea of evil is always there within people in the Berserk world. When they think of doing bad things, it either lingers in their mind, or is acted upon. In contrast, the idea of good is much harder to maintain. The Berserk world is fucked up so when people think about doing good, it's much rarer. As a result, there is significantly more evil than good. This created the idea of evil. There could also be an idea of good but in Berserk it seems like this idea can't exist. Thats just my 2 cents on this.
@DIEGhostfish
@DIEGhostfish Год назад
@@Lucas-hd4st The Idea of Good might not have been created the same way because humans are very quick to take credit for our own happiness, and to place blame for our misery or our own darker thoughts on something outside ourselves and our control. And a lot of the people in Berserk seem either bad in their own way, or just pessimistic, even beyond those of the real world. Thus the idea of them giving thanks to something greater than themselves seems less likely, even the Holy See faith is twisted up.

I think at some point in the story Guts raw will to undue the Godhand or Griffith would create an unlikely fissure in "the idea of evil" making them vulnerable to defeat. In the one panel "the idea of evil" says "I weave every mans destiny by obeying the will and essence of human kind".. well what if that essence in guts carries so much conviction that "the idea of evil" allows a situation where Guts can defeat them? One instance where this is hinted at is during the eclipse in the Netflix movies where Guts is able to physically push beyond Femto's psychic abilities for a moment almost impaling him with the broken sword. Although Femto was easily able to regroup and push Guts back, the fact that Guts was able to do this at all (like walking on water briefly) even shocked a couple of the Godhand members. Who to say this couldn't happen again in a much more pronounced way? I also tend be believe the simple fact that Guts is still alive defying literally all odd's implies there is grand purpose to his existence that we have yet come to know, meaning that "the idea of evil" could be more on his side than we realize. Moreover, all the interactions Griffith has with "the idea of evil" he never once is given reassurance of safety, only that destiny has lead to him becoming Femto.
@s0uldr4ke31
@s0uldr4ke31 3 дня назад
While I do not appreciate the mentioning of the anime (an existance so vile it makes the Eclipse itself seem beautiful by contrast) to underline your point, I have to say the proposition of how Guts can be able to overcome Femto is by far the best one I have heard. I think there are some issues with it, but I still love the idea and would be happy if it became reality in the Story.

With how heavily Berserk leans into the dark side of life it makes sense an Idea of Evil would be the “god” of its world, but even in Berserk I feel there would _have_ to be an Idea of Good. Judeau doing his darndest to make Guts feel at home with the Band of the Hawk and unite him with his soulmate; Puck relentlessly trying to help Guts and those he encounters; Roderick being the ultimate pal during Fantasia; Even the small act of that priest in the Black Swordsman arc regretfully giving Guts a lift. For what reason did these people act so selflessly if not the Idea of Good? People overlooking the Good of the world is just a weak argument in my opinion. I’m pretty sure most religions have a reason for good things, and if they don’t have one I doubt they have a reason for bad things. We can forget about Good from time to time, but good things make us feel good just as much as bad things make us feel bad, and we can also forget about Evil from time to time. I’m personally glad Miura retconned this but it is very interesting to discuss. Also, minor nitpick, but at 8:32 it sounds like you explain how an Idea of Good would serve the purpose of the Idea of Evil.

People don't just overlook good or forget it too quickly, but they don't look for something to *thank* for good nearly as much as they look for something to *blame* for suffering. We're proud beings, quick to take credit for our own happiness and good fortune. Without this externalization, this search for a "Why are we happy?" that burning need for joy to have a *cause* the Idea of Good might never form in Berserk's world.
@Ok-kk8ei
@Ok-kk8ei Год назад
Late and all but I personally have no doubts that there is some sort of God beyond the Idea of Evil. Miura didn’t shy away from taking ideas from Plato’s concepts, and the concept of a demiurge is surely one of them. He seemed to take a lot from the Gnostic thought of the Demiurge in specific. In short: a demiurge is a god with a lowercase g. It is in charge of the physical universe, and can be either malevolent or benevolent, but there is usually a flaw that causes this figure to create a tainted physical world with sin, unable to perfect it, hence all the evil that we experience on a day to day basis. A demiurge is not the true God figure. The Demiurge of Gnosticism is an abomination. It is a created creator who either cannot see the true God or is arrogant enough to ignore it, proclaiming himself as the true God. His mere existence is sinful and he is animal-like. He wishes to keep humanity in his control, having created the physical world to do so, and uses 7 Archons who serve him to help him with this. More importantly, he is the jealous God of the Old Testament. In some sources, one of the Demiurge’s sons, Sabaoth, repented. This caused the OG Demiurge to lose his position as… well, the demiurge of the physical world, and be cast to Tartarus (equivalent to Hell in Greek religions), where he tortures the sinful. The Idea of Evil is an abomination who calls itself god and is a created being. The Idea’s mere existence is evil, and thus far it seems animal like, doesn’t seem to have a will of its own, only carrying out humanity’s wishes. It keeps humanity in its control via destiny and causality, and uses five members of the God Hand to carry out its will. It is worshipped by the Holy See much like how the God of the Old Testament, YHVH, is worshipped by the Christians. Lastly, it resides in the Berserk equivalent of Hell, torturing the inhabitants by taking their identities away from them. I think this is cemented by the fact that there are straight up actual archangels in the universe. The Four Kings of the World are essentially the Four Archangels Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel. Enoch Village is named after Enoch the Patriarch, a figure said to have walked with God and was taken alive into Heaven because of it, where some believe he was transformed into the angel Metatron, becoming a lesser God, though I wouldn’t be surprised if this was just a God Hand member’s origins being described.

Great video. I do love Miura’s interpretation with the IoE. He really had unique existential thoughts and knew how to capture them with art and storytelling. My interpretation of the IoE is since it is an idea then it is a constant and free flowing and wills itself with its creators to continue on being what it is. Which in turn created Causality from the intentions, desires, and will of mankind. Within evil there is a desire itself and it is to escape from its cycle which is where Griffith comes into play to be like a savior and the true intent of what comes from such evilness with mankind as all evil is just an escape towards a goal and Griffith is that goal for an escape which is why he made Falconia. Maybe Miura intended Griffith to be the savior of mankind and something more which then leaves Guts and Casca as a conundrum, namely Guts as he is the Struggler. Hmm. I really miss Miura and it is so shameful to only have an attachment to someone so great, only through a story, yet it was his intent so it should be shameless. Idk. He really went all out with such a great story and it made such an impact that so much insight always adds onto its epic telling. No wonder this is for mature audiences only. It’s so captivating and moving. Almost like Miura was studying humanity and life itself.

it's funny how people still say "it's not griffith's fault, it's just causality" when god himself said he was created by the desires of mankind; of course this is something you could expect from people who say this chapter's not canon even if the author himself said it revealed too much

Great video. I think you totally nailed it. When you talked about how the people in the tower looked for someone else to save them, but Guts was going to face them down is a perfect example of a struggler. Buddha says life is suffering and nothing is permanent. So yeah the universe doesn’t care about human BS. Lol I think those who can escape while maintaining their core values reach nirvana. I hope the ending was that Casca and Guts make it to their Nirvana. Although, one persons nirvana is another’s nightmare if they are not on the same page. It’s really heavy, it’s so sad we wiki never know. I’m worried that notes could be like what B&K did to Dune 😭

8:20 There's also the sense that we as humans are all too inclined to take credit for our own happiness, or at least thank other humans for it, we're not looking for some force to blame for it like we are with misery. And so in Berserk the concept of cruel fate and evil impulse have become this one being, this cosmic scapegoat that's gained a power of its own.

While this is far deeper, this sort of reminds me of the chaos gods in Warhammer 40,000. How the collective psychic will of humanity (and the aeldari) created the chaos gods themselves. That they themselves were the very reason for the forces of chaos in the first place. And as for humanity seeking meaning to things happening around them, and indivertibly creating the most horrible and twisted horrors imaginable (or unimaginable) is a theme that sounds an awful lot like what Junji Ito does. With everything that humanity uses in the pursuit to seek meaning in the things around us...being twisted into something...else, something unnatural. And, with this all being said, about humanity ultimately being the source of evil, and it's horrid denizens, is this true for the other creatures in Berserk as well? Like the trolls, elves, and such? Is humanity responsible for THEIR existence as well?

I was under the impression that 'the idea of evil' was more or less just that, an explanation to the world and the things that happen in it rather than it being 'the embodiment' of evil, the 'idea' is more of a neutral concept It looking like a heart and functioning as one is important symbolism, especially if you consider the whole 'causality' aspect of the story. Causality is influence by which one event, process, state, or object contributes to the production of another event. And the heart, just as it takes in deoxygenated blood and puts out oxygenated blood, the 'idea of evil' takes in people's actions, feelings, thoughts, and desires of things that happened, and puts out potential actions/thoughts/feelings/desires, that occur due to the actions/feelings/thoughts of the past, hence the idea of evil could be a symbolic representation of 'causality' There are three things that strike me 1. That the idea of evil is seen as a monistic view of god (one is all, all is one, god is the universe, the universe is god) then that means that this idea is a symbolic representation of all the thoughts, feelings, and desires of mankind 2. Griffith, by this stage, is OUTSIDE this idea talking to it as a separate figure 3. The 'Do what you will' line. I understood from it that now that Griffith became part of the Godhand, he's no longer bound by the limits of causality. He spoke to the idea of evil as a separate figure, and not as a part and parcel of that idea And so the reason why Miura may have removed the chapter from the volume releases is because of that, it explains a lot of the concept of 'causality' which had been a predominant theme in the entire series

This chapter was my favorite because of all the revelations. That said it did feel like a "peak" that wasnt meant to be shown just yet. I didnt feel spoiled by any means, and it still flowed well with the moment, but the information given altered my perception of the story from that point on. Also no climax punched the same as griffith talking to, for all intents and purposes, god in the deep astral plane.

08:11 Regarding you concept of Good and Evil: Every thing you apply about the worship/idea of evil can be applied to the the worship/idea of good. Duality (at a minimum) is eternal both in human understanding and as observed in nature. “One must know darkness to know the light… Every beginning corresponds to the end of some other modality… etc”. Though the portions of both my vary.

What’s really cool is that the fate or causality in Berserk exists in both the human mind and in the physical world. Sure fate isn’t like the Olympians punishing mortals and other gods, it’s something more than that it’s humanity’s will or lack there of when confronted with the evils of the world. In someways it’s the overarching thought that tragic and hopeless events lead to death and hopeless endings.

I wish Miura wrote more about the World of Ideas. I suppose it is supposed to be existentially vague, but still it is an intriguing concept that I would have loved to hear more about. I don't think it is even directly discussed after its introduction (and this chapter of course...Miura's decision to exclude this chapter explains why we don't directly see it more. But I would like to have at least glimpsed another "Idea" in this world other than "Evil...") (Edit: I wonder if the world of ideas is similar to the Jungian "Collective Unconscious?...")
@jacopoarmini7889
@jacopoarmini7889 2 года назад
I believe that somewhere there must also be an idea of Good, or at least one could be created to counter the idea of Evil. After all there cannot be Evil without Good, it would just be "existance". I believe that the idea of Evil is a sort of Beast of Darkness of the Universe, a shadow self that must be dealt with. In order to "defeat" or at least combat the Idea, I believe that people should unite their desire to do good and, in the same way the collective will of humanity spawned monsters and the Idea, spawn a god of good. It probably wouldn't be enough to destroy evil, but at least prevent the Idea from controlling the fate of humanity through demons and apostles.

Falconia is coming to me its a gate of heaven on the world. Leaving the all these bad ideas(evil) beyond the wall and just living with good emotions and feelings. When people want to identify heaven, considering a door about to exceed and when you exceeded it you'll see all the good kind of things gathered to there like falconia. Therefore grifth created more big thing rather than just a kingdom. Also guts said about something for grifth. "He'll want more". I see why he said like that about him.
