Idea Tango - Argentine tango technique
In tango we always talk about the connection.
But…what is it? And how to achieve a reliable one?
The first important thing to know is that the tango connection encompasses different levels:
1. connection with the music
2. connection with yourself
3. connection with your partner
4. connection with the dance floor
In this video you are going to learn the exact meaning and purpose of connecting with yourself and with the music.
Furthermore, you are going to learn how to drastically improve those connections, thanks to my unique and pragmatic exercises developed in more than 15 years teaching experience!
If you’d like to learn more over a particular tango subject and the tricks to improve it, don’t hesitate to contact me!

Silvia Mezzasoma, Grazie per queste insuperabili lezioni. E' la prima volta che sento parlare del controllo dell'ombellico in una lezione di tango, benché io ne parli da anni coi miei allievi. Complimenti.

and could you explain compression, extension with the hands, between leader and follower.sensations with palm, fingers, thumb to go to the side...with the impulsion in the feet. not by force of the man in the hands...???

Hello there! Thank you very much for your questions. I will try to reply as much as I can in a written comment. 🙂 From my point of view, the most important things to have in mind are: The frame: for both leaders and followers the frame should be present yet relaxed. The strength for the frame to be present comes from your shoulder blade muscles, not from the shoulders or arms or hands. Once you have achieved a correct posture of the frame (symmetrical from elbow to elbow, with shoulders down, with elbows towards the ground but detached from your upper body) you want to keep it in place all the time by using the shoulder blade muscles. Tip: if the elbows (especially the right for the follower and the left for the leader) are not towards the ground you will be using the shoulder/arm muscles rather than the back muscles. The pushing of the floor: once you have a correct frame you move throughout the space by pushing the floor with your lower body. To lead a step, in whichever direction, you do not use the frame but the pushing of the floor resulting in a movement of your axis. To lead a pivot, you keep the frame in place and you use the dissociation and yet the pushing of the floor. A round comfortable embrace: sometimes tango embraces are uncomfortable because they are flat. You want to keep always a round embrace like if you are hugging a big inflatable beach ball (yet relaxing the shoulders). Thus, your elbows should always be in front of your shoulders. Finally, your embrace is what the other person feels, thus put some warmth in it! Think of it like a nice warm welcome hand shake. I hope this is of help. If you would like to know more or discuss further you can DM me and we can organize an online class. 😊

Thank you for the excellent video! I’m very petite and dance with many leaders who are much taller than I. Some of them like my left arm wrap around their neck or drape over their right shoulder. I feel difficult to keep both my elbows at the same level. Any suggestions?

Hi Heidi, thank you very much for your comment! 🥰 I would need to see you and the specific situation in order to give you an effective advice. However, in general, I can say that the tango embrace must be comfortable for both partners. Liking something and being comfortable are 2 different things. Thus, I appreciate that the leaders might like a specific position of your left arm, but comfort for you and your partner is the most important thing. Concerning the height of the elbows, in closed embrace it is not an issue if the elbows are at a different level. This because A) the connection is realised at the level of the solar plexus and through the entire right arm of the leader around the upper body of the follower (till the back) B) in a fully closed embrace pivots are very small (max 45 deg), thus balance is not a big problem. As soon as the embrace opens, even a little bit, then big pivots might be led and thus the follower needs a good balance, axis and stability. The elbows at the same eight helps quite a lot to properly and symmetrically activate the back to achieve balance and stability. Your left arm should always be mobile and always have the possibility to slide along the right arm/shoulder/back of the leader, so that you can adjust the position and eight of your left arm according to the embrace and the moves led. I hope it helps. 😊 If you need more specific advices we can have an online meeting to discuss in detail your specific situation.

@@silviamezzasoma Hi Silvia, thank you very much for taking the time to write a detailed reply. It’s only when I’m in a closed embrace with a tall leader that my left elbow is at higher level than my right one. Once the leader opens up, I do slide my left hand/arm to make adjustments. Thank you for the clarification. It helped. I’ve been dancing for 14 years and still like to go back to basics. You’re a very effective communicator. I just found your channel and enjoyed watching your videos and gained new found perspectives through your videos. Hope you will continue making them in the future, especially the ones for followers techniques. 😊

My big problem is the embrace. Dancing in a close embrace makes me feel suffocated, as I have claustrophobia. This is a huge problem I have. Sometimes I feel ok but suddenly I need to open the embrace. That´s really make me sad. Because the embrace is everything on a dance.

I can imagine that this can cause frustration and can be upsetting…🫤 but if you have a medical condition you can’t do much about it. I would rather focus on the fact that also the open embrace is a super nice embrace that allows lots of communication, feelings and nice moves / dynamics (most of which are prevented in a closed embrace). Also the hands that are in contact (the left for the leader, the right for the follower) form a little embrace themselves. So, actually, even through the open embrace you can communicate so much! As long as the embrace is comfortable and connecting it doesn’t matter if it is open or closed 😊
