Ideas for Tomorrow | Vladimir Pozner, Russian Journalist and Author 

9 years old video but every words is worth of Billion dollars even today in 2022...first time I want to say thank you to RU-vid for showing this wonderful speech.

Pozner is by far the sanest and most important voice on American-Russian relations today, and as expected, his audience is small but devoted. I'm grateful for all of his talks, I especially enjoyed his latest lecture at Yale uploaded on youtube, I recommend to anyone who hasn't yet seen it. I also really enjoyed his debate performance against Kasparov.

Russians should be more than greatful to have such a bright minded philosoph as Mr. Vladimir Pozner !!!

I'd really love if people around the world see his interviews that clearly depicts the reason behind the Ukraine crises. However, war is an never option for common folks but who cares about common people. People should know one fact no matter in which country they live especially army personnel, small businesses, employees, etc. When there's a war these are people who lost their homes, jobs, family members, and friends. And the rest politicians, journalists, rich people except a few are ones who are always safe no matter what.

Mr. Pozner has a very deep insight into Soviet System and Russian reasons for what Russia and Russians are today. It would be great to have him lecture on different topics. To get him ready for one of them I ask my question here. How could it happen that the Russian rouble which was equal to the American dollar fell down in value in 1990 1000 times? Who defined that we had to pay 1000 roubles for things that cost previously one rouble? Was it legal to freeze personal accounts in the banks of Kazakhstan until it became 1000 times cheaper? Why all the Soviet Union people were not getting salaries for months and months, (though we always continued working) and having our children cry from hunger? When we asked why we had not been paid, the answer was: "There's no money in the bank". Later I found out that the bank people were making business deals with our money. But who and how figured out that the rouble became 1000 times cheaper than a dollar overnight?

Brilliant speech! This is what i think American people needed, and are ready to hear.

I've seen lots of his interviews and public speeches in Russian. He seems so comfortable and relaxed with this crowd, and childishly happy when he was making all those jokes.

What an awesome lecture and Q & A after that! Mr.Pozner is not only a great journalist, he is also an outstanding teacher.

Pozner is the only Russian journalist who is not scared to ask his interviewees straightforward questions. That's what he is respected for! Keep it up Sir!

Thanks a bunch for such a great and wise human, journalist and speaker. I'm from Ukraine, we have very similar mentality and situation here. All of his words are the truth, I certainly agree with his opinion about the most issues that was bring up in this conversation.

People who ask questions should announce who they are, name, affiliation (if any), city and state of residence. The second and unidentified questioner was treated with great courtesy by Mr Pozner, though the questioner spoke with arrogance and clear ignorance of the fact that the US is now considered, according to a recent Roper poll, the leading state terrorist in the world. The US behavior since the end of the USSR has been characterized by wars of aggression, meddling in the internal affairs of other nations, and other violations of our own laws and Constitution as well as international law. I am a US citizen who strongly condemns the foreign policy of my government.

I see some people here in the comment section focusing too much on Mr Pozner's historical "mistakes". Most of them up for a debate anyways and it shouldn't be our focus here. Mr Pozner's historical mission has always been to build a bridge between Russia and the West (America in particular). I think it stems from his personal and intimate affinity with both cultures. His main point is that we ought to embrace our differences and agree to disagree while shaking hands in mutual respect rather than flip each other off. People in both countries should cherish people like him for they deliver this unique "bird view" so to speak to those who can't seem to transcend their national frame of reference. Bravo Mr Pozner! You are a true advocate for a peaceful and mutual understanding!

A very interesting 🤔 Journalist, i have never been to Russia, but my Parent's were born before the Revolution in Russia, now Ukraine. I was born 1940 in Berlin. We were brought as Political Refugees to America. Who am I supposed to be. I am American, but i have blood plowing in my veins that's Easter European. I always feel i missed part of my life. Would have liked to have been in your presentation and ask a question. You are obviously brilliant.

He said when asked you're and American when in America, And when in Russia you're a Russian And asked what's the main language you speak, and he replied well I'm a bit of everything. In Australia we call that a bitsa, a bit of everything .lol What a great interview and what a gentleman I'll be looking up the history of Russia as I truly found this very interesting and I love history.... First of all, I'm Russian. I live in Russia. And I can say that all that Mr. Pozner says - it's truth. Absolutely. Everything is about different mentality. Different history. But it's not the way to hate each other. I know, I speak like hippy. Those who are saying that he's far away from russian reality - are stupid. Every single word that he said is true. Just let's be wiser and more kind. We are different, but it's not the reason to be foes.

I like him. Need more.

На всякий случай, если вы не знали, русский - не родной язык Владимира Познера. Детство он провел в Штатах и в Советский Союз переехал только в 17 лет, не зная ни слова по-русски. Так что для меня более поразительно его прекрасное владение русским языком, нежели английским.

Glad to see him still on the scene and doing well... I remember him from his Radio Moscow days and on a lot of US television, especially on Phil Donahue.

Bravo Mr Pozner. Although I disagree that Russians and Americans are completely different and they don't have anything in common, I think Pozner's speech was balanced, informative and to the point. Thank you, Mr Pozner.

I'm of the opinion that the biggest problem in the world in a geopolitical sense is the government and corporate leadership of the United States of America. It's own people are victims of delusions perpetuated by it's media and educational system. I don't agree with Pozner's remarks about China. It shows a lack of understanding of China's history and cultural baggage on his part. China has never embarked upon an endeavour of world conquest. The most aggressive powers that have throughout the last millennia have been the European powers. The U.S. (by extension) is a "European" colonial power for it was founded by European (mainly British) colonizers. It pursued a vicious genocidal war against the indigenous inhabitants of North America to expand to the Pacific ocean.Yes he makes some remarks about failures in U.S. foreign policy yet fails to point out that the U.S is pursuing the game as an arrogant world bully. The bombing and forced dismemberment of Yugoslavia and the hypocrisy over the situations regarding the referendums of Kosovo to Crimea comes to mind together with U.S. foreign policy adventures in Afghanistan,Iraq, Libya and Syria. Not forgetting to mention the support for far-right neo-Nazi groups in the Feb 2014 coup in the Ukraine.

I would also speculate that anti-American sentiment in Russia has a lot to do with Putin’s control of mass media.

Churchill is a good quote maker. But for Great Britain it wa not such an enigma or wrapped...The Royal Navy knew how to hit Crimea and Saint Petersburg. There´s an interesting lesson on this by a British profesor on RU-vid. Many countries still go on considering Russia as the old same foe as in the cold war: mysterious spies.... Why? Well, because the cold war lasted so long that it became a tradition. And people love traditions and stick to them. Everyone has some enemy, and the best enemy is the old one you know.

Pozner is Russia's biggest asset. Good speech. Strange how the US and Russia lost ability to communicate. Looks like it's a chess game until both parties agree to a draw. Russians proposed it but the Americans were not interested. Their first strategic mistake.

I can't agree with his certain ideas (i mean Pozner) but,nevertheless, I have to admit that he is a real professional in his business and he perfectly takes the floor.

Authority has been civilizations weakness. Authority from top to bottom and the need for it. The need comes from insecurity. We need common sense security for a start..

Ok, he predicted that Putin’s popularity will decrease in 6 years! Yet, after 8 years, Putin became more popular all over the world, while Posner’s popularity plunged down!

Once again: Give the U.S. and not just Russia a couple of generations to develop. This is not a one-sided thing. The U.S. have to develop more acceptance towards the "otherness" and have to stop to play the role of a world police with double moral standards. And Russia has to learn from its mistakes also and deserves dignity like any other country in the world. As long as the U.S. policy does not take Russia serioulsy, the differences will not become smaller.

I liked this show, V's strength lies in his frankness and his experience; what he says is highly relevant to the world TODAY ten years on...

Always a great speech but saddened as ever by the criticism of Mr Putin. When a cheerful, large, ignorant Russian woman asks a question and prefaces it as "someone who hates Putin" because she mistakenly and ignorantly believes he is the one who sustains the oligarchy, it is simply offensive. For Pozner, it would be impossible to get his point across in the US without taking this line.

Sigh. . . I've had a crush on Vladimir Pozner since the days I watched his show with Phil Donahue in the early '90's He is brilliant, fair-minded, and, well, ... still hot!

Describing him as a "Russian journalist and author" is not exactly correct. He is French by birth and, in equal parts, French and American by upbringing. He only arrived in the Soviet Union as an older teen. He himself has stated on numerous occasions that he doesn't feel as a Russian, and it is only his work that has kept him there for so long.

It must be an interesting transition from Russia to America. I wonder if he has ever published any Papers? @

This speech was good, but why did he try to portray China as a the real enemy thus pass the American discontent of Russia towards China. That's only going to create another problem.

Don´t confuse your own personal opinion with "most Russians" and "majority". I am Russian and I admire and respect him as most of my friends and people I know do.

Haven't seen or heard anything new from Pozner since the start of the Russian war in Ukraine. Is he being silenced? Does he fear being arrested?

To me being my nationality (American), is my culture passed down from ancestors and which i'm born into and grow up with. Otherwise i'm a guy, just like some Russian or Arab. I live here, if i move, i'm still American. The evolution of the history of the people my DNA is related to and who were around my ancestors, living with them, is what being (American) is. Is what my culture is. Taking into consideration, that; Culture, brings a certain set of values depending on, where you come from. Don't judge a book by it's cover, every American heard about that expression in one form or another. Yet the first thing we do when told to, is judge by the cover. I don't fully trust this man but it seem his old age gave him a reason to say things he wouldn't have before. Mea culpa he once said. For too many, only through their final act, do they let the best of them come out, In part, because they don't really care anymore, the world is about to be gone to them anyway and somehow even unbelievers, don't want to leave without looking for redemption... So they go and speak.

I am Russian too, and not everything he said about Russia is accurate. For example the Tatar-Mongolian yoke did not isolate Russia completely, also not every Russian City-State was conquered by the Tatar-Mongolians for example Novgorod was never captured and never isolated. Also Russians did not have Slaves, they had Serfs. Slavery was illegal in Tsarist Russia, but Serfdom was legal, so in 1862 is when the Tsar freed the Serfs, and John Adams was the second not the fourth president of the USA

I enjoy most part of Mr. Pozner's speech. Some part I cannot agree with. Do USA and the west have a positive image of China? Not really. Suppose you are in the think tank of USA, your strategy would be to destroy your enemies one by one, not to be the public enemy to everyone. That's why they endeavor to disdain Russia first. China would be next target. Pozner's opinion that the west and Russia should unite together against China, is a new version of cold war, a cold war not between capitalism and communism, but between the west and the east. Hopefully it would not happen.

Given the asked questions, I have the impression that when Mr. Pozner says "as you know" or "everybody knows it", the audience or at least those who asked questions doesn't actually have a clue of what he's talking about.

Well, some words about china and "retarded society" in iran (or whatever that was) were really bold in my opinion, but that's what i like, not just these soft and sweet speeches about how good it's all and we just don't understand their culture and mindset. I was wondering the way he explained all these complicated things i wasn't completely understood by myself, even being russian and living here. As i know he left the country not a long time ago and i can understand why, i would too if i could. From my point of view the disaster of russia is total selfishness (we call it egoism) and all other problems arises from this. Anyway wish to be better times here. И смотрю русских понабежало =)

The problem: if there is no policy to prevent a country from being a potential super power, then hostile super powers will develop. History showed that if the US allows a country to grow and even support it with technology and huge imports, it will seek to be imperialist as we see with The CCP. The US will not interfer with the pursuit of happiness for other countries in people(see Japan, Singapore, all of Europe). The US has military in most of Europe,Japan, Guam, etc. If it wanted to be Imperialistic it could. Preventing a power hungry individual or family from taking power is a good goal. On a side note The CIA has done some nasty things, and the Karma caused much suffering and death to the American people.

Another spectacular speech, maybe even more interesting than his speeches in Russia (maybe because US has more developed freedom of speaking (don't know how to call it in English)). If you like Posner, I strongly advise youth to find and watch his russian show where he meets with the most interesting and influential (but not always the best in the moral plan) people in our country! So a non-Russian is the best poster guy for Putin. He remembers me of the wedding scene in the Monty Python's Holy Grail. His arguments is always similar: "let's not bicker and argue about who killed who, we are here to celebrate a happy occasion ...". He goes like this everywhere to make excuses on how his boss may lose his temper if the west and his own citizens don't treat him as he is supposed to.

No matter, I can say that even questions were stupid enough but it' was really funny. And finally I've enjoyed. It was kind of nice movie :)
