Adam and Neil Pearson are identical twins, but you’d never know it from looking at them. Although they share the same DNA, their appearances are vastly different; each suffers from neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disorder that has affected them in divergent ways. They tell their story in this deeply moving short documentary. Read more: www.theatlanti...

Hi! You would only feel that way if you would one day wake up and find you suddenly have that (or another) medical condition. Adam had his whole life to gradually get used to it. - It might also be that he looks at Neil and thinks sometimes: this is what I really look like beneath the genetics. - Neil on the other hand may sometimes feel guilty. I know Adam Pearson (not personally) from speaches he gave. I really like him because he seems to be kind, intelligent, witty and tolerant and he has a great sense of humour. Look him up on RU-vid and listen to him speaking. Adam seems like someone who is neither sorry for himself nor for his life. Your response is quite natural, it's useful that you brought that up. Kind regards!

I want to start with i like your comment. Im still watching so this my be covered later in the video but as of now i would just like to say im a twin. As a twin you by your choise or not spend a lot of time together also being brothers i imagine that bond was strong. I imagine that the only reason that it was not devistating to his personal life is because from the moment he was bore he had some one beside him who knew as much about this world as he did. Who saw him as a human. I mean yes friends and family do but they have a past without the experince and so like because the twins have no bias before each other it just i imagine helps not having a low self esteem. Like where as some would be stand offish his brother would only see a typical human nothing more or less. I think its really quite special. Sorry i ramble i hope it makes since.

David Hollenshead well of course, I didn’t mean that the other brother doesn’t have it hard as well. I struggle with my memory as well (memory distortion associated with OCD and also difficulty with memory retention from medications I was on in the past) and while it does suck, no one would know anything is wrong just by looking. Whereas the brother with facial disfigurements can’t hide it and has to deal with rude people staring and taking pictures, being bullied as a kid, etc. That’s all I meant. Of course I’m sure neither of them have it easy.

Here is the thing that I do not understand. Whenever I hear stories about people who are physically different than everybody else they always say the same thing and that is that strangers on the street will make fun of them. I think people might do it for alot of reasons. Ppl naturally dont like other ppl who dont fit in and dont like things that remind them of the negative parts of the world. This is why you have ppl get irrationally angry at people who are homeless and sitting at the side of the road. They dont want to think about things like homeless people. I think shouting obscenities at them or making fun of them is their way of dealing with that uncomfortable feeling.

They nearly always do it in a group, to foster their sense of power and try to impress those within the group who hold the same values as they do, or lack of them. Same reason why gangs of men will harrass a lone woman. It's not about you, it's about them using you to gain some temporary thrill or prove how hard or cool they are to their mates. IUsually it's the younger ones, the teenagers/early twenties, the most insecure groups who are desperate to shore up their image within a group of their peers, usually bolstered bu some liquid courage. It's rarer to see people alone , and sober, deciding to abuse a disabled person. They always need that audience giving them approval.

In nearly every instance, they've developed some sort of an inferiority complex due to an abusive family member or something along those lines. @JoJo Skye Its not aging that makes you wise, It's about experiences, as you said. People always have this general mentality of "whoevers older knows what they're doing.", no, it all depends on how they grew up, and how they were raised. Even a 15 year old could have the knowledge and understanding of an adult.

@ArtofZenDigital
@ArtofZenDigital 5 лет назад
This video shows both the unconditional brotherly love Adam and Neil have for one another, as well as the darker nature of the people they’ve faced in society. The bullying Adam encountered broke my heart, because as he put it, “It’s not a problem for me, it’s a problem for everyone else, and everyone else’s problem becomes mine.” Adam came to terms with what he isn’t able to change, but society at large has prevented him from being able to do that. This story brings up a lot of things that have very real consequences. When I finished college, I’d been struggling with Trichotillomania for some time. It’s a form of OCD that involves the obsessive pulling of hair which can, in many cases result in patches of baldness, or even damaged skin in the affected areas. As a social person, due to where it affected me, my beard area, and the level of damage it caused at its worst points, I tried to function with it normally. People would ask me if I was in a fight, or in the worst case, when giving my seat on the train up to an older woman with a young child, the lady loudly said, “Don’t sit there!” to her daughter, “That man has AIDS!” In many ways it must’ve looked like there were lesions on my face due to the damage. That’s when I hit bottom and tried to find out the name for what I had. Googling everything, there was a video that came up of a young girl who had the same condition and it made me feel like I wasn’t alone. She was very brave and spoke about how the world treated her. Her courage encouraged me to reach out to her, throughout that time, she would tell me about thing that worked temporarily. Then I made the mistake of reading the comments. One in particular stood out, “If you can’t stop pulling out your own hair why don’t you go and....” You can fill in the blanks here. After 2 years of speaking to her and talking about different things that helped at times, one day her Mom responded instead of her after her channel became relatively quiet. She told me her daughter committed suicide due the constant bullying. This is the reality we live in. The words and actions of others have real life consequences. There are amazing people in this world, and there are those who are truly heartless, and it’s unfortunate that the later can have such negative impacts on the former. Her story was one of many, and it changed my life, I spoke to her mother about how her bravery impacted my life in so many positive ways, as well as how articulate and brave her daughter was. That will always stay with me. After writing to several places, a dermatology office reached out to me and forwarded my letter to my insurance company which reviewed my photos. They agreed to laser the hair on the affected parts of my face that were routinely badly damaged. It was a struggle not to pull the hair out long enough to laser the hair away, but it helped a great deal and it healed after years and years of struggling. Then after accepting a job as an art director, a car hit me while crossing the street. While I healed after, in ways that would make most people wonder if it ever happened, the procedures couldn’t be completed due to metal plates in my jaw line other parts of my face. The hair pulling still occurs in the areas that weren’t finished being treated, but it’s become slightly more manageable, and less noticeable. What occurred to the girl who was so brave was a reminder of what Adam said in this video, “It’s not a problem for me, it’s a problem for everyone else, and everyone else’s problem becomes mine.” We all have a responsibility as people to try to be the best versions of ourselves we can be. We can be a part of the problem, or the solution, and realize that what we say to others on and offline, have real world consequences.

I have NF1 and have over a 100 café-au-lait(birthmarks) across my body and was diagnosed when I was in 1st grade and the doctors told my parents that I might have some learning problems. I am now a senior with a 4.5 gpa who is going off to college next year and I’m very blessed to not have it affect me to this extreme extent(like it is invisible rn apart from the birthmarks) but it is still something that I have to keep in the back of my mind because I was told that it could change at any time. Thank you for this video. Usually the thought of growing tumors always scared me and I try to not think of nf as much as possible but this video was recommended to me and it really made me feel better and realize that it isn’t the end of the world if I do grow neurofibromas. Much Love 💕

For more information, I received the genetic mutation from my mother who has it (no issues besides small fibromas). She received it from a mutated gene then passed it on to me (50/50 chance, my brother isn’t affected but he does have cerebral palsy). They found the tumor when I was two years old (optic pathway glioma), an incredibly common tumor, usually never gets treated. However, mine grew backwards into my hypothalamus and pituitary gland and optic nerve. Two years of chemotherapy and have been great ever since. Still have small fibromas but nothing too serious. It’s something not many people hear of, but something we should all be educated about. No harm in learning 😊

My son has it too! Hes the first in our family! It affected his chromosome 17, so now he has the 50 percent chance of passing it on genetically. He also has small tumors all over his body but he suffers more from the other side effects....the shorter height, adhd and learning disabilities!
