In the next part of this series I will be looking into the Immigrant Inspectors identified from July 9th, 1903, their family histories, and what happened to them. And yes, I have already started to find their descendants!

My aunt once told me that my father was the last surviving male descendant of Samuel Ellis, the former owner of Ellis Island. He passed away about 10 years ago, which would make me the last surviving direct descendant. She also said that Samuel Ellis was never paid by the government for the island, and so they still owe that money. Not sure how true this is, but I thought it might be interesting to you.

If it were me, I'd see a real estate and contracts lawyer to ascertain if the anadoctal information you have may be validated. If so then perhaps a legal direction and possible lucrative solution may exist for your family. You may think, oh well that was a long time ago so too much trouble and forget it all. I fully understand that thought. Just that the government has always seemed to bully citizens and take whatever they deem in the best interests of the U.S. Regardless interesting item to have read. Thank you.

These video projects you do gets to one of the big things that makes genealogy addictive which is mystery solving. I personally enjoy going to antique stores and flipping through old photographs. I will often buy photos that have little notes written on the back. Often the little note plus the photographers hallmark is all I need in order to identify the person. Once identified I will upload it to family search and also offer the original to an ancestor if I can find a user with said person in there tree.

My maternal grandparents came through Ellis Island in 1914. They came from Italy and departed from Naples. It was in March 2002 that I had the opportunity to visit Ellis Island with a tour group.

Something similar was done with the 1905 San Francisco pre-earthquake film. It was on 60 Mins. A guy researched the licensed plates in the records and the local newspapers of the cars and was able to identify the owners.

Very interesting! They should link these movies to the registration records of these immigrants. People that are researching their ancestors probably have better photos of them and might be able to positively identify them. Imagine seeing your ancestor(s) arriving at Ellis Island!

I think Clarence Arthur Thomas has attached earlobes, but the man in the film and Frank Ainsworth have detached earlobes. It is hard to see very clearly, though. Just another possible clue. Also, the moustache style and the drooping eye set of the man in the film point to Ainsworth.

Have you had a chance to look at the last footage of the Lusitania? In 1915 she was filmed pulling out of NYC on her way to Europe, when she was torpedoed by U-20. I think that it would be both very easy (the officers will be mostly at the Bridge, with others at certain points, whose locations would have been well documented), and EXTREMELY hard (normal passengers are very small and indistinct). I saw.it would be a worthy challenge.

My great grandfather came to ellis island in 1903 too. His name was Michele Dimeglio, he changed his name to mike miller. How do I find out if and when he came to ellis island, he snuck into the boat. I do remember my Nannie telling me this. Arlington national heritage book, page 142. The last name mentioned in that part is michele dimeglio. How can I find more of my roots about him. I'm so curious.

I don't think that's Ainsworth in the film... his shoulders are broad (guy in film has sloping shoulders), his ears sit lower than the guy in the film (and they don't stick out as much), and his face looks too round. Also, if the photo was from the time of the film, I'd say the age was all wrong. Have you looked up Clarence (or whatever his name is) and also Ainsworth on the census to compare their ages?

Appreciate the hard work for making this video. But in reality, if the identification is done in a dark environment, or the persons have put on face masks or wearing makeup, then it could be a challenge.

These people that worked on Ellis island made $6 per day it looks like the most I see is $5000 and I’m sure that’s an ANNUAL SALARY which is $13/day or $96/week for a family man imagine that having 5,6,7,8 kids let’s say and surviving on $96/week

I think it would be more likely that the woman whose arm the inspector takes would not be the first on his manifesto list, but close to the last. He would have wound up his enumeration of the passengers and walked off with that person instead. Look to see if one of the women listed at the end of his list more rightly fits the age of the woman who gets off with him. Just a thought.

@sparky1043

I enjoy your series. On this video, you mention a ship "Città di Napoli". The word "Città" (City in Italian) is pronounced CHEE-TAH, with the emphasis on the 2nd syllable. So it's said more like "chee-TAH". In Italian C + I is pronounced like CHEE. Sorry to be a nitpicker! BTW, my Italian grandparents came to the U.S. from Naples (Napoli), Italy in1914 and also passed through Ellis Island.

I'm not sure, I had started writing it and had reached out to the families of possible men identified as the Inspector but they all had no interest in participating (I don't think they really even cared I had found possible footage of their ancestor at work). I ended up putting it on the backburner because of the issues with further research and just my available time in general, but I will definitely come back to it at some point.

Not yet. I had a next episode planned and half written-out but ended up having to pause the research on this from being overwhelmed with work. Last I had done for this, I reached out to descendants and relatives of each inspector who worked a ship that day but I have only heard from one, who unfortunately had no interest in doing an interview but was appreciative of the footage (plus she felt confident it was her ancestor in the footage). I do plan on continuing this series though, so hopefully in the not too distant future I will get that next episode up!
