If by "their own government," you mean Hamas, not only can they not be bothered to protect them, they deliberately invited Israel to attack them and then hid in sewers they built so they could intentionally put them in the line of fire. And the saddest part is, their intention for the plan is actually working.

This is truly the most ridiculous and insulting part of this all. And I'd argue Israel is not at war with Palestine, but with Hamas. Sure, its very hard to separate the two of late, especially with all the "support for Hamas" stats, but even as an Israeli, angry and completely hellbent on retribution, I must caution restraint in terminology. I write this because I have a front row seat to how easy the grief and anguish of this war can mutate into outright bitter resentment and it's a fine line most here really do not wish to cross. And yet... The defeat of Hamas simply must be absolute. Their "cause" is causing the world to erupt into chaos and not justifiably!

The plan is for Israel to control the security for a while and the Palestinians to govern themselves. As we saw in the Oslo Accords, you can't force people into democracies unless the people are ready for it. So I'm hoping at least that the more moderate voices of the Palestinians that want peace will step up. Since if the USA/Egypt/Israel/Saudi/Qatar, and whoever else they want to throw in there will decide that for the Palestinians, we will end up in the same mess in a few years. We have to start giving them agency.
