Before I make my comments, I have a disclaimer.i have never been on a narrow boat, I've never seen a narrow boat in person. I have watched thousands of narrow boat vlogs 😏 Ok here comes my Grandma concerns. Please be careful in the locks. It only takes a second for a catastrophe to happen. If you slip off the side you could get crushed or drown. I enjoy your videos and would miss you 🥰 Thank you
@TheNomadicCrobot
@TheNomadicCrobot 3 года назад
Thanks so much for you concern Penney, they really can be dangerous, you build confidence with everyone one, though we haven't really run into any issues, as newbies were wearing boots to make sure we don't slip, and I suppose learning to balance over time will help too, thanks again :)

Thank you for putting this post up - I have been on a narrowboat and I totally agree with you. Do not climb off the boat until it is *stationary* please! You're a lovely couple - stay that way
@tangs167

Just a suggestion, keep your centre line along the roof ending at the stern, then when you jump off, you can take it with you and handle the boat from the centre, easier to pull in than using stern or bow lines.
@TheNomadicCrobot
@TheNomadicCrobot 3 года назад
Yes we were using the center rope originally in locks but found the boat seamed more stable using the two end ones, we do still use the center one as our main line when jumping off, it was just a really tight landing area at this occasion, thanks for your comment 😀

CRT lock off paddles/gate when there is a problem with them before they get round to repairing them - I assume the other authorities so the same We were on the Glasson Branch in June and on the six locks about 1/3 of the paddles were locked off
@TheNomadicCrobot
@TheNomadicCrobot 3 года назад
oh that's interesting , I thought maybe it was because it was quite shallow coming up towards that lock, but know thinking about it I do remember my side being extra tricky, so can you still operate them in your situation?? or do you have to find an alternative route?? thanks for your comment Dave :)
@davehopkin9502
@davehopkin9502 3 года назад
@@TheNomadicCrobot Its normally one paddle thats locked, so the lock is still passable, just takes longer to fill/empty, if there are gate problems they will put a closure notification on the CRT website (which can send out notifications)

Hello Crew - At 1:03 the large building on the left is (was) the Godmanchester Hoisery Mill (making undergarments and the like for men and women since 1924) but was originally called the Huntingdon Hoisery Mill which is strange as it’s on the Godmanchester side of the river…. Now it's fancy apartments At 1:05 and just to the left of the bridge is an archway which was used to pull up supplies into the factory - I used to row my dinghy in there but it was pretty rank… Talking of sides, you may have not noticed the bridge is lacking in the fine architrave visible on the Huntingdon (right) side - it was a joint job but Huntingdon had more cash hence the difference! They met in the middle and it was a case of ‘yeh, in yer face!” At 1:34 is the A14 road which heads towards Cambridge. Well. it did... You will notice no traffic because about 1/2 mile to the right the road ends and soon this bridge will be no more as there is a new bypass further south On the left is the Bridge Boatyard which was a hive of activity during the years before cheap holidays to Greece and cheap beer killed off boating holidays. Luckily, things are on the mend but it's worth a few goes at steering before hiring a boat. On the right is the Bridge Hotel which has a fine selection of wines in exchange for your boat.. Brampton Lock is my favourite lock since childhood - please don’t destroy it! TIP 2:37 - Mooring - the more you pull in the front end, the less the back end will move in.. Lock on one of the “slackers” - it’s damaged and is due to be repaired. Further use would kill it. Saying that, if you’re going upstream (which you are) the slackers should have already been closed unless some inconsiderate idiot you have recently passed failed to finish their half of the job. When you leave a lock downstream, close the slackers or as my Mum always said, if you’ve gone to the loo, put the seat down… 5:02. You’re now going under the new A14 to Cambridge - That old one at 1:34 is soon to be history so you've recorded a bit of history... Happy cruising and I’ll fill you in on more useless facts as you travel upstream... Just wait until Castle Mill Lock... you're gonna love it. MWH x

@TheNomadicCrobot 3 года назад
oh how amazing we wondered what the beautiful large building was, the area has a huge amount of history, that's interesting about the bridge, the one in st ives was very similar, so much approaching these large structures and passing through them. it was a lovely lock, but the they have made it very difficult for long boats to moor up on the landing area...you approach it head on, though we saw other boats ignoring the signs to go round the other way making the landing area a lot easier to approach. amazing knowledge and definitely no useless facts, its wonderful to learn about these areas ,thanks for your lovely comment :)

@@TheNomadicCrobot The bridge in St Ives is one of only four in the country with a Chapel in the middle. It used to be twice as high. There's hinges embedded into the bridge that used to hold gates as it was a "toll" bridge - if don't pay; yer not crossing! If you need more info before your next vlog, PM me and I'll do my best! Watch out for the seals- there's a few around (no kidding!) TIP - If you haven't already bought it, get yourself the Imray Guide to the Great Ouse - possibly the best $15 you'll ever spend. Also buy a spare lock windlass and a spare lock electric box key because you're gonna loose one at some time!

Just an observation, there is something odd about your front rope fender if you notice it just flipped up and allowed the front of your boat take the brunt of the impact.
