Idiots blocking emergency vehicles

Reacting onto Ambulance / Fire / Police with siren:
It happens every day: while emergency services try to respond to their call as fast as possible, there are those idiots out on the road which don't give way but block them. They don't stop, don't pull over or don't react at alltowards lights and sirens. Of course, sometimes it's difficult to pull over, like for that one truck in the construction zone which proceeded in order to pull over as soon as there's sufficient space, but unfortunately it happens too often that crews have to get off the emergency vehicle in order to direct traffic, people not pulling through a red traffic light and carefully into an intersection, blocking fire station exits,pedestrians which just keep on walking or the all-time classic: emergency vehicle passing lanes which are blocked.
Please note that traffic laws differ between countries, and in some countries also between several states. Thus the laws on how and where to pull over are defined differently in different places.
In Germany, from which most scenes in this video compilation are from, there are the following 2 laws on how to move over:
1. As soon as an emergency vehicle makes use of its roght of way by using emergency lights and sirens, other drivers are required toclear the path immediately. Without defining where to pull over, it includes whichever action which is necessary and possible in order toclear the path, depending on the specific situation: thus they might pull to the right or left, mount the curb, proceed through a red traffic light and into an intersection or slowing down without stopping.
2. the 2nd law applies to all highways and other multi-lane roads outside the city limits. On these roads, people are required to create an emergency vehicle passing lane between both driving lanes (or in case between more than 2 lanes: between the far left and the next lane) as soon as they approach and end upin a traffic jam. This law applies to all kinds of traffic jams: it might be a simple traffic jam due to a construction site or hour; in fact it doesn't depend on if there's an emergency scene up ahead, they still have to create the emergency vehicle passing lane. Keep in mind that there might be emergency vehicles which still have to get through, likee.g. ambulances heading to the next city, highway patrol units heading to another highway or an incident in the oncoming direction...

et's go through this scene by scene: 0:00 sirens blaring for quite some time already but oncoming left turning traffic still enters the intersection and vehicles in front of the fire trucks took ages until they finally moved through the red traffic light, into the intersection, or drove up the sidewalk or median 0:36 while the black VW Polo moved to the center line which is allright, neither the grey Audi ahead, nor the black Opel or black BMW in the next lane moved to let the riot police van pass; They grey Audi was in the intersection but didn't move any further for quite a long time 1:19 all the vehicles in the left lane are idiots, simple as that. The illuminated traffic boards above the left lane say that it's shut down and no vehicle is allowed to drive there, yet it was packed with dozens of vehicles. Thus the Engine had to fight its way through traffic and the co-driver even had to get out of the truck to direct the driver 2:14 that SWAT truck took longer just to get from one Avenue to the next Avenue than we take all the way from the station to the scene; No vehicle ahead of it moved aside and pedestrians also walked across right in front of it 2:48 you hear that desperate switching between siren tones and honking of the horn. I ran more than 110 meters to the intersection and only as I got there the first vehicles finally started moving over 3:12 what a dickhead in the dark-red Opel. While being fully aware that there'S an emergency vehicle right behind him, he absolutely refused to clear the path by driving through the red light, beyond the stopping line and into the intersection. 3:43 both the Engine and Tower Ladder weren't able to leave the station grounds as vehicles in the side street were completly blocking the station's exit. At that point the Command Car went the other direction and drove around the entire block 4:13 the black VW sedan basically did the right thing as the Engine performed a u-turn, but he didn't drive far enough; That's where the Engine flashed the headlights and switched the siren on again 4:36 both drivers of the old and new silver Mercedes were driving into the intersection, but then simply stopped there in a matter where the special operations apparatus wasn't able to proceed or get around them at all; It took some sweet time until they finally moved on 5:12 neither vehicles ahead of the police car nor oncoming traffic tried to move over; Sure it's more difficult in a construction zone, but there definetly was space, just look at the chevron marked area to the side of the oncoming lane, traffic could easily have moved there; Also the vehicles in front of the police car could easily have pulled over into the bus stop, roundabout or road section before actually entering that construction zone. I recorded a driver of a semi truck doing so, so it definetly IS possible 5:22 the fire truck turned on the siren as soon as he left the station, still it took lots of airhorn honking to get traffic moving at the intersection 5:40 that Highway Patrol car had such difficulties to get through that he flashed his headlights more than 60 (!) times at vehicles ahead 5:58 also the state police patrol car in this clip was required to grab the attention by flashing headlights multiple times 6:10 drivers in that situation are supposed to clear and maintain an emergency corridor between the lanes; Although they somehow did move over sooner or later, most of them went back into the middle of their own lane right after the Engine passed. In such an emergency with multiple emergency vehicles responding that makes response times unnecessarily slow. Just look at some of the semi trucks standing close to the lane dividing line and only start moving over as the fire engine is right up on their ass, flashing headlights at them. Same thing with the car drivers in the fast lane 6:36 While the grey Seat reacted as the saw that this might be an option for the ambulance go get around, the ambulance had to switch between siren tones and honk at the driver of the blue VW to finally move 6:54 driver of the black VW not aware of his surrounding. While only paying attention at oncoming emergency vehicles blocking his path (as he intended to turn left into a driveway) he completly missed an entire convoy of emergency vehicles approaching him from behind with lights and sirens as well 7:09 the dark Audi not reacting onto the state police patrol car waiting behind him, flashing headlights and honking besides the constantly running siren 7:20 that unmarked Port Authority Police Department car didn't even try to proceed in that street, seeing no chance to get through as drivers were blocking it completly 7:40 Engine leaving the station and switching the siren on right away. The car turning right did proceed, but on the following 2 lane section he simply kept blocking the Engine and that's where they sounded the airhorn at him 7:53 again the ambulance needs to honk at drivers to finally clear a path 8:09 another ambulance, with drivers ahead either not moving, or first moving into wrong spots and a police officer needed to tell them to keep on moving into the intersection 8:25 as all drivers in the road didn't move over, this command van from the FD decided to drive down the sidewalk and bikelane instead 8:40 this fire truck required a walking escort in front of him, shouting at people so they actually move out of the way for the fire truck 9:05 sure a messy situation when the road ahead is blocked, but drivers then simply should choose another route instead of standing there blocking all traffic. Took some sweet time until the rescue truck actually reached the intersection 9:39 ambulance fighting its way through traffic, took like 20 minutes just to drive down this road. It's the same location like at 8:25 ... as you can see it has turned dark by then and drivers were still blocking the road although they knew emergency vehicles were coming 9:55 maybe the scene where drivers might be the least to blame due to high curbs directly on the bridge, however right before/after the bridge the curb is much lower and people should simply drive up onto the sidewalk to give way 10:53 lights and sirens right behind him and the driver of the white Skoda simply stopped right in front of the ambulance 11:07 damn that took long until drivers finally moved to the left and right; The curb is super low on that bridge, it would have been so easy to just drive up onto the sidewalk. The ambulance took more than 2 minutes to move 500 m ...

I used to drive an Army ambulance through Wash., D.C. At a traffic circle near American University, a taxi cab sat at a red light, refusing to pull forward so I could get by him. I used the ambulance, in low gear to literally PUSH the cab (a Diamond Cab) out of the way. As I went around him, a Metro PD unit pulled the cab over.

I understand your frustration, but just because traffic is supposed to yield to you, it doesn’t give them the authority to run a red light. A jerk cop would be just as likely to give him a ticket for running the red light to get out of your way. Traffic is required to yield to the right, they are not exempt from traffic laws and would be legally liable for any accident they caused. I’m quite surprised you don’t know that.

@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 6 лет назад

I see the same thing in traffic jams. I was in one once and saw a towing truck coming down with it's lights on from a high overpass (it was easily 500 or more meters behind me) but it was capable of quickly merging and take the emergency lane, and I immediately went to the left-most position in my lane (which was immediately right of the emergency lane) and I just could see the response of the people behind me be one resembling something off "Now what the hell are you doing...why are you making that move?" and the towing truck came by at a reasonably slow speed and I saw them making a move that was clearly one caused by being surprised by the big thing moving past them. The same happens when I spot an emergency vehicle behind me and I put on my hazard lights to let the driver of the emergency vehicle know I saw them and won't make a move, and I see people behind me be like "Hazard lights, why? Why do you have those on...what's happening that requires you to...HOLY SHIT there's an ambulance!" *makes panic-fueled move to a different lane the ambulance (or whatever vehicle) actually didn't need but scared them nonetheless*. Typically I also move to the far right of the right most lane since in some cases on the highway, during traffic jams, the left of you is where motorcyclists will try to pass and I was taught to give them at least a bit more room. (Unfortunately there's also the motorcyclists who think that when everything is driving 50-60km/h instead of 100km/h is still a traffic jam and do it like that, which is when I'm not moving over and I typically give them a gesture of "Are you out of your mind or something?" Not great behavior from me as a car driver I get that, but it's people like that that I feel will sometimes end up in a serious accident because they for some reason feel invincible on a motorcycle, and unfortunately take someone with them, fatal or not.) Unfortunately people seem to be taking part in traffic less and less and are busy with completely different things. If not their phone than just driving completely unaware of their surroundings.

Well, if you, as a driver, stop so close to the vehicle in front, then of course you can not leave in case of an emergency. Always keep so much space between your car and the vorie that you can still see the ground. That will give a lot of improvement for the emergency carriages. The traffic regulations say: "never drive a junction if it is not free, this also applies to traffic jams. Wenn Sie als Fahrer so nahe am vorausfahrenden Fahrzeug stehen, können Sie im Notfall natürlich nicht gehen. Behalte immer so viel Platz zwischen deinem Auto und der Vore, dass du immer noch den Boden sehen kannst. Das wird den Notfallwagen viel Besserung bringen. Die Verkehrsordnung sagt: "Fahren Sie niemals eine Kreuzung, wenn sie nicht frei ist, das gilt auch für Staus.

NO! One of the stupidest things you can do in traffic is leave a car length or two car links between you and the car in front of you at a stoplight that is the stupidest moronic thing I've ever seen it's equal to about 20 other things I see while driving there's no reason for it you pull up closer to that car give other cars room if you're in a small town and there's like 15 cars do whatever the f*** you want but in a big city you don't leave big giant Gap so people can literally Drive between you and the other car or pull in in front of you and take that space up you idiot Bunch up closer so more cars can stop at the light you don't need a traffic light where the cars are stopped for the next six blocks back and they're stopping at green lights because they're so far back from people leaving the big gap wrong wrong stupid

Traffic doesn't just evaporate when they turn on their sirens. The main problem is that drivers don't leave enough space between cars to manoeuvre. And everyone who drives is guilty of that; even keyboard warriors.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 6 лет назад
when they don't move so close up to the car in front that they are able to read the other car's navigation system, there would be sufficient space to move aside even in heavy traffic... especially on the freeway, there's absolutely no excuse for not creating sufficient space when you are supposed to do so no matter if there's an approaching emergency vehicle or not

well, that was directly on scene, not a situation where the emergency vehicle still had to travell across halfthe city. Bottom line: even if we had stronger bumpers on our emergency vehicles, we wouldn't ram other vehicles. It would be rated as accident, and no-one is allowed to just leave the scene. Result would be to cancel the call and dispatch another unit for the same call, with a lot of time lost in the end

To avoid alerting their presence to a hostage or hostile situation before they arrive to scene. Was driving home one night on a secluded city road and i saw some siren lights appear way back, but thought it was just someone speeding back there or something. Most people after getting their driver's license almost instantly forget some of the basic rules of driving up to a traffic light: Keep at least some distance to the person in front so you can make a turn by turning your wheel fully left or right in case you need to move out of that lane without hitting the person in front. And while it's a bit different from regular cars, I always make sure when getting up behind an emergency vehicle that they can back up at least half a car in distance so that if they get a call while waiting they can move. My driving instructor for the normal car mentioned that that among with regularly (or as he said it "religiously") checking your mirrors are some of the first things people stop doing.

@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 6 лет назад
timid sirens? Someof them, like those in the first clip, are as loud as a Federal Signal Q. But both the Q and Rumbler, just like any other wail and yelp siren, fail to meet the acoustic requirements to be used on public roads in Germany. And concerning airhorns: while they aren't on every emergency vehicle, many fire apparatus and some EMS vehicles do have horns
@koshakush
@koshakush 6 лет назад
we've actually talked about this before, about 4 days ago. I understand but it's interesting that there are no exceptions to the "acoustic requirements" for emergency vehicles. For example, here's a video of both EMS and police responding in my city, which has A LOT of traffic. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3MWPaDqDI2Q.html
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 6 лет назад
well, there are no exceptions since the requirements are requirements for a reason. There are norms and laws. Thus in Germany only the hi-lo sirens meet those requirements. When emergency vehicles would use a wail / yelp sirens and are involved in an accident, the insurance wouldn't have to cover the damages / costs. In some other country only wail and yelp might be legal. In the USA you can hear both ... I filmed some emergency vehicles in NYC as well, sometimes I filmed one emergency vehicle twice within minutes because I was faster walking past than it proceeding through traffic
@koshakush
@koshakush 6 лет назад
wow, that's really interesting. It's the complete opposite here on everything you said. Our exceptions are written into the law. It's in the traffic laws, you cannot give a traffic ticket to a firefighter for the lights/sirens, going past a red light, etc. Also, the sirens help prove to the insurance company that it was hard not to see or hear the emergency vehicle. It's interesting that over there the insurance won't cover you for having sirens like ours because you would think that would HELP avoid an accident. The traffic though is something that can't be fixed that easily. We are working on it though, as they are planning on putting a toll on entering congested areas of downtown NYC.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 6 лет назад
well, our emergency services don't have to pay tickets from red light cameras when they were responding with emergency lights and sirens. And don't twist the things I said, please! I did NOT say, that the insurance wouldn't pay when we used siren and are still involved in an acciden! That's only the case when we would use a siren which isn't legal here, a siren which doesn't meet (how often did I say this already?) meet the acoustics requirements.This counts for ALL wail and yelp sirens, including ones like the Q or Rumbler. Correct, sirens should make an emergency vehicle recognizable to other traffic participants ... so we use sirens when it's necessary, but the only ones we use are hi-lo sirens. There are so many toll stations on American roads already. Bridge tolls, tunnel tolls, whatever tolls ... apart from commercial truck traffic which has to pay a highway toll (toll systems in the trucks, terminals at gas stations), there isn't a single toll station on German roads: not on highways or in the cities, not on bridges or tunnels

But to be honest I'm not too deep into that topic. That kind of special equipment is mostly used by industrial fire departments and rather few municipal fire departments. Paving way for emergency vehicles should be the first thing they should teach in driving schools. Some people are actually stupid.

Outside our fire station are traffic lights that specifically operate when the fire station gets the alert, so at least no worries getting out of the station. I'll be honest, I thought the one at 4:41 was a dustbin lorry 6:58 had four behind him, maybe he was deaf.

4:41 that's a Pod Carrier with a special equipment pod "extinguishing powder" 6:58 probably heard the siren, but thought it would come from the oncoming emergency vehicle and thus simply didn't notice that there are more right behind him

It's sad to see this world wide. It's the mentality people these day's carry. It's pure selfishness. It's the same people that hate on emergency responders but at the slightest of inconvenience cry the hardest for them.

I have no idea how somebody would not be able to see a big ass armored truck rolling down the street

People don't understand, you are allowed to safely break traffic laws to let an emergency vehicle pass. If you have to go through a red light to let an emergency vehicle pass, you should do so.

This is y u leave a decent gap between urself & the car in front when u r stopped @ traffic lights or in traffic. It allows u space 2 move forward & 2 the side if an emergency vehicle comes up bhind u. I was taught that u need 2 b able 2 c the car in front tyres @ a minimum but far 2 many people stop bumper 2 bumper.

I PROPOSE that all student drivers should be set up with a police car, fire truck or ambulance to encounter them from behind during a random portion of the driving test with lights and siren and graded on how well they respond and yield all right of way to the emergency vehicle.

I dunno what's worse the people not moving or the bored people recording every emergency vehicle they see

what's your problem about people filming emergency vehicles?
@S3kk3N
@S3kk3N 6 лет назад
People tend to film them and in doing that every little mistake that gets made ends up on the internet costing them jobs etc, if you had someone looking over your shoulder all day watching what you were doing how'd you feel? Not that I particularly have a problem with the people recording but they need to realize we all have a job to do.
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 6 лет назад
working on such a job you always have to count on being recorded, especially on scene of an emergency. No matter if there are by-standers or news reporters. Standing alongside the streets and filming them driving with lights and sirens shouldn't be a problem. Yes, one of my videos probably did cost someone's job already ... some years after I uploaded it, it became public that the recorded organization had no permission to run an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens, atleast not in that specific case. Apart from that: I had a camera looking over my shoulder for some time, as my boss mounted cameras inside of our ambulances. I had no problem with it at all

Literally driving an emergency vehicle in a city on the sidewalk is faster than the roads like 10x
@EnjoyFirefighting
@EnjoyFirefighting 2 года назад
only in gridlock traffic; Apart from that I don't really have the need to drive on the sidewalk as I can proceed on city streets quick and easy

Anybody that does this, what’s the point what do you get out of this? Someone could be dying out there and you’re just blocking the vehicle is like a stupid goddamn idiot. I feel like if someone dies and emergency services aren’t able to get there on time you should be charged with unnecessary, murder, or whatever the charge would be or something along the lines of.

Its frustrating, but what people can do to give them space, they can't put their vehicles in air or anything There should be extra lane for emergencies vehicle only
