UK punk outfit IDLES returns with an album that improves on the brutal and politically charged style the band delivered on their debut last year. One of the best punk albums of the decade without question!

What you don't mention about Danny Nedelko, which is key to the song's message, is how they mention the typical immigrants that people see in the UK all the time, the ones that are on the receiving end of any anti-immigrant sentiment (the nigerian mother of three, the polish butcher etc.) and they put them right next to the successful immigrants that we love in the UK (Mo Farah, Freddie Mercury etc.) to highlight the public's hypocrisy towards immigrants, we like them when they win Bake Off or Gold medals at the olyimpics, but we hate them when they're just the normal person down the road living alongside us.

The "baby shoes for sale, never worn" lyric in June is a variant of a somewhat famous six-word story (presumably by Ernest Hemingway). The original story is "For sale: baby shoes, never worn."

Yknow I feel what Anthony doesnt get about the album is the parts about the British class system cus he comes to it from an American pov Like the line about James bond isnt about a disinterest in mainstream franchises but how James bond is a upper class murderer who serves his own In fact the entire song I'm scum isnt a tounge in cheek "yeah I'm bad" but I "I'm not posh, I'm not a Tory, I went to a state school and I'm fuckin proud of that all"

Wow, you truly know nothing about punk then. That's embarrassing. What a typical millennial internet bandwagon hipster with zero serious knowledge or respect for the authentic, novel, meaningful underground genre/art/culture movements of the past. Punk is borderline almost DEAD in recent years/decades compared to it's state from the 70s through 90s. This album cannot even begin to compare to "Repeater" by Fugazi or "Atomizer" by Big Black or "Goat" by Jesus Lizard or "The Modern Dance" by Pere Ubu or "Fire of Love" by Gun Club or "Psychic Powerless" by Butthole Surfers or "Hot Animal Machine" by Henry Rollins or "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" by Dead Kennedy's, and many many others (these are just a random sampling of prominent examples off the top of my head... there truly are so many masterpieces of punk, especially if you include "post-punk" and "new wave" and "no wave" and "industrial punk")

Why would you so closely follow the arbitrary and frequently crappy, clueless, compromising, confused, or aimlessly lost critical opinions of this youtube entertainer? He's just an ironic edgy contemporary internet hipster doofus who casually chats about music in a silly meme-ish video form as part of an entertainment schtick so he can make money doing something he's interested in. Are people that lost and deranged in this postmodern period that someone like Fantano is taken seriously as an important music and culture critic? I suppose so. That's mostly because there is little to no real culture anymore in terms of meaningful art or historical scenes or movements. It's all artificial: commercial hegemony and then hollow, ironic internet virtual subcultures such as the musical hipster and eclectic connoisseur centralized in /mu and rateyourmusic and shit like that, with critics like Fantano and Pitchfork having been given totally unjustified precedence for a while, simply because they're filling an unfilled role first (as the internet changes everything, whoever has the idea and initiative to become a sort of "internet figure" first reaps the rewards... as long as it's within the virtual culture of cyber-commercialism). There has been a profoundly knowledgeable guru and genius regarding music, culture, and art (in temporal entirety - past, present, and future) who's technically had an internet presence long before Pitchfork or Fantano and he also adapted to the new virtual cyber era of music since the 2000s brilliantly and to this day is still more tasteful and "hip/cool" and incisive and prescient in his critical perspectives and guides than anybody else... but his website is relegated to obscurity because he doesn't work within a commercialized framework. He is an independent critic who has put out his tremendous volume and quality of work totally for free, as a true labor of passion, no profit incentive, and thus never compromising in the slightest. Many of you might know who I'm referring to (he's too unique and profound a critic to be mistaken for anybody else) and yet most of you completely avoid him or only tentatively dabble because he gives your fragile millennial hipster egos fear and discomfort.

Nah, this is not a 10. You underestimate how fkin amazin a 10 is if you think album this deserves it.
@kirklandau2826
@kirklandau2826 4 года назад
@@Gungus-v1g There has never been an album that deserves a 10. Ever. A 9 should be an extreme rarity - a supreme artistic masterpiece of timeless historical legacy. An 8 should be very uncommon and a big occasion as well - a major masterpiece. This however is if one is to use a critical scale with any sort of meaning that isn't shallowly myopic. Of course none of the commercialistic professional critics abide by this. They profit off of the commercialist, consumerist, pop-cultural, and artificial dissolution and exploitation and degradation of music as a serious/substantive artform. There is only one great philosopher-critic left who has waged a revolutionary war against this commercializing ruination of music/art, and he has shown the proper use of a numerical rating scale. Most of the hipsters here should know who I'm talking about because they have repressed and buried his name and critical endeavors deep into their unconscious mind in an attempt to forget and avoid having to deal with the revolutionary truth that made them uncomfortable and threatened their fragile internet snowflake egos (which they first protected with memes upon memes and all sorts of hollow, aimless internet irony just to create distance... that's how they repressed him and his website, plus all sorts of other petty, basic-ass ad hominem labels like "old", "elitist", "biased", "pretentious", "weird", "contrarian", "eccentric", "egotistical", "arrogant", "out of touch", "crazy", "losing it"... or just vague dismissals with zero real counterargument such as "he's wrong", "he has bad taste", "he doesn't know what he's talking about", all of which are projections of their own insecurities and simplistic, textbook cases of denialism and defensiveness - they always protest too much [yet refute too little] and that's only when they dare to even address him seriously/directly, usually it's memes and tiptoeing roundabout snark to ignore the subject)
@hh950
@hh950 3 года назад
@@kirklandau2826 Rating systems vaguely approximating a normal curve, assuming an average album falls somewhere in the 5-6 rage assumes that albums can reach an extremely high level of quality to the same way they can reach extreme lack of quality. This makes sense because most critics go into music tending to believe there can be something of value in it, so there will tend to be an abundance of good albums actually listened to that counteract the hypothetical "bad" albums. As such, a normal curve (if slightly more clustered upward) CAN be viable for a numerical score system. Furthermore, commodification of art only occurs to the extent that numbers overshadow the substance of the work itself, which, while it does occur with many contemporary critics' audiences, is less damaging than the fact that many of these types of reviewers (but clearly not Anthony Fantano) do not focus on the text (Fantano) OR subtext (more thoughtful critics) of a work, but only *cultural* contexts. You're right about that at least, but where you lost me was "snowflake egos" because that phrase removes all of the populism from the already diminishing image of music as serious art and makes this thought unapproachable by left-aligned music *ahem* ""hipsters"" because arguing snowflake-ism is fundamentally anti-populism and thus, anti-leftist, both in theory AND in practice. Additionally, the commercialization of music harms music as an art form so long as the factors that inform a work's text, subtext, and context are all, in tandem, unfit for critical evaluation to any substantive end. As it turns out, many "formal" critics (such as the one I know you're referring to) tend to only focus on the text-related elements of a work and how "ambitious for the medium" an album is while often disregarding an album's subtext. As such, subtext-heavy 2010s-2020s acts like Car Seat Headrest or Phoebe Bridgers get fucked over by his *type* of critic because they're "anachronistic" and "anachronism without subversions = bad" despite taking fullest advantage of what music as a medium can achieve via their text/subtext/context interplay to a substantive or "meaningful art" end result.
