2015 STI install notes: (appreciated your video very much! I just installed one and thought I would share a couple notes) The bezel is very fragile, I had to drill (open up) the 4 HVAC module holes otherwise they can crack and break using the OEM screws. The top part is even more fragile, I removed the part that holds the hazard and MFD toggle button in place and installed that just prior to final hookup. My first bezel was broken on the top two screw attachment points. Also, to be clear you need to use the OEM antenna. I did not use the iDoing supplied antenna cable. Lastly for 2015 users if you do not care if the reverse camera remains in the MFD and not displayed on the iDoing then just skip that harness all together.
Is there a video or tutorial on how to get the 2015 backup cam to display on HU, even if it displays both. I know you plug some harness into the MFD somewhere but No clue
Dude your an absolute wizard and this has been monumental in helping me plan out my audio setup in my 20’ STI. Thank you so much for making all of these audio related videos.
This is hands down the best video on installing this head unit that I have seen. I just purchased one and it will be installing it this weekend I feel super confident now
Hey man, just wanted to thank you for this super thorough install. Literally plug-and-play with your detailed video. The only issue I had is with the backup camera not working initially, but it was a matter of just pushing the OEM connector all the way in. Anyways, dope vid!
@@huhinteresting It's been a while so I don't recall, but for me the issue was that one of the connectors was not all the way in and it wasn't obvious until I rechecked all my connections. Follow the tutorial in the video and make sure all the connectors are all the way in.
Thanks for making this video. One of the best, if not the best in describing the different wiring harnesses. I'm installing an Idoing unit in a 2013 Camry this weekend and frankly, I'm disappointed in the lack of instructions and bad videos out there. Good job!
Appreciate the solid install tutorial bro. I just finished installing mine. Dumb mistake I made was, the 1 spot I didn't tape, I put a tiny gouge in. Oof. I ran the dual USB to my glove box but neither of the USB cords are working or some reason. Not even charging anything. Maybe the USB connection came loose on the HU. MIght pop it back out on a later date and check that. I also picked up the Metra adapter to retain the center console usb. It goes idoing usb -> metra -> car center console usb. Overall, getting the 10mm bolts out was the hardest part for sure. I used a magnetic 10mm socket - made it much easier to not drop bolts. I got lucky and my model didn't have a starlink module. Mine's a 2016 base with base sound system. It also had the backup cam integrated into the 28 pin.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You did a great job of explaining the extra cables and which ones I wanted to use. I pulled the old unit out and was perplexed with the extra cables, so I put it back together. Now I’m confident I can complete the install.
Yeah just saw, thanks for the heads up! I'm fixing to start back up with my own channel (been retiring from the CG so haven't had much time). Hope all is well with fam!
What a great video, thank you for the information and details you put in this video. So many RU-vid video's out there showing how to install these Android units but never explain in this simplified way. Thank you!
Boost & Shutter, excellent vide as always and super informative! I'll share my experience with a similar (Joying) unit as for the antenna. The plugs provided by this and other aftermarket radios assume the power for the antenna is from the actual antenna connector, it is NOT. Power for all versions of the factory radio antenna is actually from the i35 connector on pin A8 (yellow). I found this out from both my Joying unit and Kenwood radio using the idatalink kit. Both had horrible stereo reception, I eventually found this out using the Service Manual for my car (2019 WRX) and looking at the wiring diagrams. Once I powered the amplified antenna via the correct pin/connector reception was back to normal. I have (had) the base radio but I checked the other versions and they are all the same. Hope this helps!
Good tip, thanks! I’m planning on installing my Joying head unit this weekend. Joying seems to get mostly good reviews, but hardly any specific reviews for WRX/STi version
Thanks for the video, it’s been very helpful and informative. I just finished installing mine and it’s great! One thing though, you didn’t mention the 2 additional 10 millimeter bolts that need removed from the sides. There is one behind the glovebox to the left, and one down under the steering wheel and to the right. Recommend to use a magnetic 10mill socket and an extension on both. 🤘
Absolutely superb video, since this unit doesn't come with instructions they should pay you for this detailed video it absolutely helped me with my rear camera mix up like you described. Thank you and keep making great videos
Hi, can you help me? I'm interested in buying the radio, but I have a question and does it keep the 2 original USB ports or are there cables left in the glove box?
Great Video man! I like that you went through and explained what each cable does. I ended up getting another brand off amazon and they did not send the correct wiring harness. This unit looks way easier. I may have to get this unit instead.
Are you going to post a video about your amplifier installation? Are you skipping the existing speaker wire going to the doors? im very interested in doing the same
I don't even own this stereo or car but I know I will be referencing your videos when I replace my Crosstrek's radio with a Pioneer soon. Thanks for the upload!
I successfully installed this on a 2018 Subaru. However the electronic parking brake light is on all the time. How do I get it to turn off? I read that I need to ground the break wire from the Idoing unit. That's not working.
You make the best videos! Extremely detailed and direct. Everything you need to know to do a full install. Hope to see you soon. Saw what happened on IG. Blessings.
2017 WRX and I just installed the head unit. Everything works except I can't change the volume or skip songs. There were some connectors that didn't have any place to go but every other feature works fine. Android auto, reverse cam ect
Thanks for the detailed steps. My only issue with my install is lining it up. It's either the top is short to the bottom. cant get both to fit properly. any advice? Thanks!
Sorry for the late reply. Yes I was able to by pushing both sides with a little bit of force. Started from bottom and aligned the top and push both sides in.
Ya I struggled with this when trying to finish it, I found multiple posts on the issue saying you just had to give it a bunch of force to push it into place. Once I gave it more force it popped right in
After installing my Hu everything works fine but the only weird thing is that my reverse camera is not displaying my straight line overlays that the Oem unit displayed when reversing. Any idea why?
Awesome video. I want this head unit. The only thing I don’t like is wiring for the GPS and Microphone. I’m not sure how to hide to wires. I saw where you put them but can’t figure out exactly how. Seeing those wires would drive me nuts. Still debating to get this or not.
Thanks for this guide; it was super helpful in getting my installation done. I actually used everything except the dual USB and the extra amp harness. Everything is working except for the mic, for some reason it doesn't pick up anything. Did you have the same issue?
Great video! I used your guide to install my radio and it works flawlessly! Well almost. I wish there was a good way to keep factory usb/aux locations for the radio but I'm sure I could find something online for that. ALSO, I also have an aftermarket amplifier installed and have alternator whine. You mentioned that you were going to install a aftermarket amp so I'd love to know how exactly you did and some steps to take to make sure everything works well together! Thanks again for helping the community with this video, keep it up!
I have the Harman Kardon version. After install I noticed the parking brake light stays dimly on when the brake is not engaged. Others have had this issue as well but I can’t find the reason. Do you happen to know?
Okay so I have everything connected and I have an iPhone but when connecting to Bluetooth no music is being played, I doubled checked to make sure all connections were tight and they are so what is my problem?
Great video as always! I would assume you did a ton of research between the different brands with similar head units for the WRX/STI, what got you to buy the idoing vs the others? Btw, Your timing is perfect! I was looking for a dashcam and then boom you come in clutch with the 70mai, I'm also getting a head unit soon and im very glad you came this route!
I read through some forums and this one seemed the safer one. I was more worried about it getting lost in the mail than anything else 😅 Glad my channel is proving useful!
@@akqjtn I hear ya, iDoing is getting a lot of good opinions, im actually looking at Joying which cough my eye first because it has a physical volume knob, but upon further research I see they have been around for some time and have good reception among their users. Also I noticed they release frequent firmware updates.
This is one of the few install videos that get the actual clipping of the plastic bezel in with no problems. One video the top wasn't even clipped in. Since the stock bolt in brackets aren't used that would not be very safe. I assume you aligned all three at the same time before pushing it in?
Here are some tips for putting in the head unit: 1) Make sure the inside is clear so no wires/harness is in the way when you push the head unit in. 2) Align the top clips around the vent bezels first. 3) Once they are all in, place a hand on the surface at the top to keep the clips down and in place while taking your other hand and pressing in the clips at the very bottom. You will have to slightly bend (I know that sounds scary but it's not actually bending the unit) to make sure the bottom clips are aligned in the correct position. 4) After the top and bottom clips are aligned, gently push in the sides of the head unit to pop everything in place. Gently press all around the top, bottom, and sides to confirm it's all in.
I was deadass freaking out about the red yellow white cables. Thinking there was going to be some inside before taking out the stock HU. But nope. 💀 also good to know that telemetry box or whatever works the starlink if I decide to turn that back on
Why wouldn't you need the ground wire? Whoever installed mine did it in a way that whenever I touch the screen, I ground it and static goes away. Not good unless you're always touching it.
Do you happen to know the voltage output of the preamp outputs for the iDoing? I didn’t hear you mention it in any of your videos and couldn’t find it online either. Thanks for the help!
Hey there and help please. I just installed the idoing into my 21 base WRX. When Apple CarPlay boots up, my rear driver door speaker and front driver door speakers don’t fully work at all. Only works relatively good in Bluetooth but it’s rather annoying because it’s inconvenient at best. Thinking of returning it and getting something different. Help please.
I just order this 2 minutes ago. PLEASE BABY JESUS PLEASEEE!!! Let this work correctly and not have issues like certain parts of the radio, steering wheel or back up camera not work. PLEASE FOR ALL THAT IS HOLY 😣😭
Do you need to plug in the microphone to have hands free through the factory speakers or is that microphone just if you never had the hands free through speakers in the first place?
Great video and way helpful. I have a base 18 STI and the speakers sound like garbage. Does this unit help with sound at all? I’m not wanting to upgrade all the speakers yet. Main reason for getting a new unit is for CarPlay. That’s for all ur great videos man.
Man I have watched this several times and i dont get it. Mine has zero sound coming from it and Ive undone and redone it several times now. It turns on with no issues but i have no sound from anything. The telematics unit is connected and pluged in as well as all the other connectors that I need
Hey guys, I have a 2018 wrx with a Harmon kardon system and it works great BUT I have absolutely no sound. Any ideas or suggestions or has anyone else encountered this problem
Hey I am installing the idoing head unit into a 2020 WRX and am getting a "no signal" for the reverse but I did attach the 5 pin connector as you showed in this video. Do you have any suggestions?
Make sure that camera pin is connected in the correct spot. For this one, you could mistakenly connect it to one other area. If you are looking at your idoing head unit from the back of it (hard to do when it's already partially installed, I know), the place you want to connect it is in the UPPER RIGHT area (should be a black area). Try that :)
Add me to the list. Anyone ever get this resolved? Idoing had me send the unit back in for a refund. Never received the refund. Repurchased through a US supplier and the same problem is present.
Thank you for the detailed explanation. This is a great tutorial. I just have one question: I have a 2021 WRX with and I’m planning on getting iDoing unit and after market audio system. What cable should I use to connect amp ignition?
My audio doesn’t work anymore. Nothing comes out of the speakers suddenly and reconnected everything 4 times after changing a damn hazard switch. It was working fine before 😢
Awesome video! Bro I will install kicker oem speakers on my STI. Will this head unit Amplify those speakers?? If so how many watts per speaker? I was between doing this or just leaving STOCK head unit and installing ALPINE INLINE AMP to it to amplify kicker speakers… So I want to know which route would be best?? And as far as SOUND quality which is better… Thanks!
Man I know this is 2 years later but I have a 2018 Subaru WRX limited and my front door speakers are not working they just sound muffled out I don’t know what I did wrong or why it is doing that !
After further review I have seen you said if you have the telematic unit you don’t get front audio I do not need the telematics unit what else does it control ?
Hi, at 16:48 you didn't plug in the green wire to starlink. I just installed the idoing in my 2021 Crosstrek and I'm unable to plug one of the starlink wires in. One of the connection wires comes out the back of the OEM radio where it connects to the starlink module. It appears the idoing radio doesn't have that connection, so now getting emails from Subaru telling me something is wrong?
Hi Keith, it's not going to work. I went back and forth with an idoing customer service representative and they kept insisting this will work with my 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport. After the 7 or 8tu email the representative sent me a picture of a Crosstrek OEM radio and the starlink module only had 5 connections. The two are large and the 3 smaller. On my starlink module it had a total of 6, the 2 large and 4 smaller connections. To make an already long explanation short, Subaru has changed the starlink module. It now routes a connection from the OEM radio to the back of the starlink module. I don't know if it's happened for 2021? I simply don't know, but idoing didn't know. I had to return mine and now in hopes of getting my money back.
I installed one in my 2021 crosstrek and the rear camera was working, even though it went to an almost fishbowl view. Was messing with options to get the lines back and now the camera doesn't come on when I put it into reverse. Any tips?
