You gotta love how despite being one of his least favorite games, Ian Flynn’s utilizing a lot of elements from Sonic Heroes. First arc - Neo Metal Sonic. Second arc - the metal multiplayer skins. And now, we have the Power Cores.
I love how they explained Dr. Eggman figuring everything out with things not adding up. It brings home that idea that he can be an evil genius instead of just evil bad guy with robots to build. Seeing him show how smart he is with traps and security measures is always a treat. Nice to see some of the villains getting shining time too. We've been in need of more Mimic and to stay humble when we see Rough and Tumble. Great Review as always.
I love the Way Zavok thinks. I wish Canon eggman was more like Acrhie Eggman. Not to overly Reliant on his Robots and actually use free thinking Generals to run his Army. You can't control the world with Machines. You need allies not friends but people who want to take advantage of your empire and rule beneath you or overthrow you when the time is right. That how Palpatine did it.
True Then again Archie Eggman was based off of SatAM Robotnik who already took over the world and ruin 99% of Mobius and will turn anyone that is not him into a robot without question.
@@FrostTheHobidon Yeah but in the show he didnt have Egg bosses. I liked the idea of these free thinking Generals working for eggman but eggman have them use cybernetics so he can destroy them if they betray him or force them to what he wants. Also SatAM universe was a lot smaller than the archie comic book universe. Eggman still had to deal with G.u.n and other adversaries that wasn't the freedom fighters. In the game i would consider G.u.n to be more a threat than a hedgehog and his friends. G.U.N Literally have a more powerful sonic and the United states government backing them up. But the in archie comic they made g.u.n like a Few survivor humans or something making The Kingdom of Acorn more powerful then them. Which I hated. Point being SatAM WORLD is a lot easier to conquer.
This issue did the villains justice to a T. But it leads to some one overarcing question: will the power cores be a sustainable approach for Starline going forward? Dissecting the issue, Starline had the most development and character compared to the others. And Yes, Zavok is right: Starline does have the means to be his own leader. But, the way Zavok addresses his point, it strongly encourages the notion that Zavok is playing to his insecurities, largely trying to get back into the Doc's good graces. Except....I doubt that robbing your former boss would be a good thing to put on your resume. Zavok made it clear that his arguably eloquent in speech and brutish in nature, but is not dumb like his teammate Zomom. He clearly knows how to play the long game and go along with a plan only to gut his "allies" when they are distracted. Zavok knows Starline is lying now. He is just waiting to see what happens next. Mimic is only in this because he wants to be wiped away from the Eggnet's memory. Afterwards, I pretty much expect him to become a turncoat. Rough and Tumble do have some degree of competence, but are ultimately similar to common street thugs that occasionally succeed in instilling fear. They ultimately come off as comic relief compared tl the others. As stated earlier, Starline now has the means to stand toe to toe with his adversaries and his ex-mentor. I'm very much convinced that Starline did something to Rouge in the previous mainline issue, either implanting a hypnotic command given to her as a subliminal message, effectively seeding Starline's influence into her until the time is right. Either that, or he successfully managed to replicate other characters via clones or synthetic duplicates. TL:DR; While we may have some of the pieces of the Miniseries and the main story, we aren't exactly sure what else is missing. We will have to wait and see what other details will emerge. But this issue was very well done. It did its job. And it was done wellm
I like the direction they're taking with Starline. It feels like they're building him up to become the next major threat in the comic. Which is good because, like you said, we need more independent villains in this comic.
y'know, before this issue came out, i was wondering "maybe one of starline's creations in the test-tube are the hooded stranger in issue 33." but this issue definitely seems to imply it was starline. the power cores are a neat addition, but they make me question why no one tried using them in the metal virus arc, i can imagine the speed core being somewhat useful in warding off the infection at least. the scene with zavok and starline is also pretty neat.
@Jett Lucas Hayes sonic heroes doesn't feature swimming, so there isn't any swim cores. in universe though? frankly any of the cores could probably make you swim better.
@Jett Lucas Hayes interesting idea, but ultimately, i don't see how it would be that useful, i mean it's pretty much starline's tricore over here, except it only works underwater, so there wouldn't be much of a point to it, at least in my opinion.
Its pretty clear at this point that Starline is indeed the Hooded figure in the CRABB arc. Perphas he's taken Zavok's advice and fully broken away from trying to get back into Eggman's favor and become and independent villain. ZI guess we'll find out in BB-part3 and CRABB-P3.

Ok, I’m calling it. I haven’t read all the way through but the robots Starline is building are the hooded figure in the main series. With the matching colour orbs it just makes sense Oh also, I love that Zavok is actually smart, he’s a great villain, he just gets carried away. If he got lucky and did well he could easily end sonic and the rest. Just dumb luck, terrible subordinates, and arrogance have gotten the best of him every time.
When issue 33 came out I noticed the "Bad Guys" logo sported the 3 colours of heroes and thought it was one of Starline's experiments, but maybe it's the "man" himself

This is one of the most disjointed villain team ups ever you got Rough and Tumble who are pretty much comedic villains, then you got mimic who is a coward who betrays everyone, do I really need to say anything about zavok? Then you got Doctor Starline former genius Eggman fanboy
So as I want to end my thoughts on this issue on a nicer note as there are a few thing here I really liked will I start with my biggest grippes with the issue first and than go more and more into a positive light. So starting off with properly one of the WORST addition to this comic yet, I of cause talk about the Powercores. Why I thing there are terrible you may ask? Pretty easy there break absolutely everything! Thing about it don't you thing that orbs that give giant stat bonuses would have come pretty in handy with the War against Eggman in Forces or the direct aftermath of it especially after Metal Sonic Appeared to restor order, heck even by reconstruction operations like the ones the Restauration was leading would these powerups sure would have helped out a lot. And never mind the GODDAMN METAL VIRUS ARC you know the ones in which one of the earliest discoveries it was that Super Speed could fought off the infection like just imagine with these cores apparently doubling ones abilities would Sonic have properly been able to get rid of all the Virus's in him at ones while already faster Characters like Amy, Tails or perhaps even Cream and Knuckles could have also been able to run the virus off like Sonic did. Introducing this dumbass Gameplay mechanic from Sonic Heroes that is such a massive powerup that so ridiculously easy to get that Eggman can mass produce it is just absolutely insane and breaks everything that happens up until now. The World building was in flames before but now it looks like the End of the World in 06 finally! Also towards the point raised about it spoiling the next main line issue would I like to mention that the Cover in question actually has no webbing on his hand so ether the artist messed up for it actually isn't Starlin. Now than speaking about the Powercores manufacturing lets get to bad point number 2 (well more like number 3 but this was a better transition) So why exactly does Eggman just happen to have enough resources to not only have this super highly guarded based Starlin wants to break in but also a large Powercore manufacturing plant and why does Starline and Eggman treat it like its a causal thing that Sonic raids his bases? Did Ian forgot that not only this isn't SatAm/Archie were Eggman is the ruler of his own nation and also simultaneously forgot that he wrote Eggman bitching at the start and end of the Metal Virus arc about how little resources he has left (at first with how few workers he has right now during the creation of the Faceship and than at the end that from the few not already Forces and its aftermath raided bases he has now even less as the Zeti Ordered the Zombots that trash what's left of Eggman's bases??? Never mind that the blatant existence of all of these bases Tails could just check for in the EggNET (yes he could the Zeti said there did keep track of what happens on the main plant that way) and so properly just raid a base with freshly manufactured E-100 robot spart parts. By this point is the continuity here worse than in the early Archie Comics despite Pender's admitted ignoration of what all the other writes did. So my actual 2 is however still in that Manufacturing plant as its about the Robot T-Rex the problem here is that he is Zeti proved. You see the issue with this is not the reason WHY Eggman would need to equip it with an EM-shield nor is it that its actually Zeti proved no the problem here is that this clearly shows that Eggman CAN ZETI PROVE HIS ROBOTS! Thing about it all of Lost worlds apparently only happened because Eggman didn't thing about zeti proving his badniks in that game or better yet even if I would be willing to buy that Eggman didn't want to have the extra expense on EM-Shielding all of machines why wouldn't he at least do it to his super Robots like well I don't know METAL SONIC thing about it if Metal Sonic would have had a EM-Shield in the Metal Virus arc would the Zeti overtaking the Faceship never happened as Metal especially with the Chaos Emeralds on his disposable trashed them. And Same goes for Gemerl given that all know it was a risk to send him against a Zeti yet no one even suggested to just EM-Shielding him which would have lead to him and Cream being both there for the final battle and him properly just casually getting the Last Chaos Emerald from Zavok on his own with very little problems. So for my last Negative point let me just re-illiterate again that Mimic's reason for being in this make no sense as Eggman would still have his own brain and his non EggNet bound servants Orbot and Cubot to remind him about Mimic. I don't want to comment on Starline's new toy just yet as I first want to see were its going but if he gets to keep it will it really make him look like Ian injected favoritism into him (the fact that Ian's writing for the series so far has repeated many of his mistakes from his day as fan fic writer also doesn't give me to much confident so far) So now lets talk about the actual good things about this issue The action for ones is actually really really good it furthers the story,, shows off the abilities off all Characters, flows good and is actually allow to speak for it self. We hadn't had action this good for quite a while in the Comic (also minor thing that is more so the problem of an earlier issue than this ones but how exactly did the Skink brothers with this powre on display lose to the completely ruined Barakat town?) The Character interactions all feels rather well written and thought out. Eggman being so familiar with Sonic and Tails antics that he can see right through a phony is a great touch as it both highlights his genius as well as his familiarly with his opponents that same kind of knowledge about the Heroes that allowed for his Fake Chaos Emerald tricky back in SA2. Starline trying his hardest to not repeat the mistakes of hubris that keeps causing his Idol to fail while more and more so failing at it. And the Best thing about this issue and just like the last time can't I believe I write this is Zavok. I have no Idea what kind of Dark Magic was employed here or if perhaps the series continuity is so bad as it was the sacrifice to the Dark god that enabled this but what ever the case maybe Zavok so far is just the best on this story. How he casually looks right though Starlin How he feeds Starlines Ego to make him just as sloppy as Eggman How he has his own interesting point of view on the Robots Vs Flesh and Blood Warriors How he realizes how Starlin was lying them them about the power cores How he wasn't even suprised about the Skunks taking out the Robo T-rex showing both how good he is at determination his allies as well as his opponents and how it just underlines his previous point of Nature Vs Machinery. So for me is the only relevant question for the next issue so far if Ian can keep the Zavok Hype Train going or if he will crash it into a wall.
hmm, honestly? i think eggman just decided not to manufacture power cores until around this story arc, i mean, after sonic heroes, the power cores are pretty much never used by eggman robots again, more often than not using a different power source like chaos drives, animals, wisps, or infinite constructs (i'm like 80% sure most of the enemies in forces are infinite constructs) as to _why_ he all of a sudden decided to manufacture power cores again, i don't know, same reason he got back to using animals in lost world i guess, maybe he's trying to refine them again or something? y'know, at this point i'm inclined to believe eggman's definition of "not enough resources" is just inherently different from a normal person due to his ego and love of grandeur. listen, the EM-shield is a hard mode exclusive item that you can only get by grinding to level 99 and beating the secret boss, after all that, eggman just wanted to give it to his dinosaur summon instead of his metal sonic party member, can you really blame the guy? dude? stop being ridiculous, gemerl doesn't need no EM-shield, all he has to do his punch his wireless receiver. for real though, maybe eggman recently decided to create EM-shields and just decided to put the first one on the egg-rex? maybe ian or evan are gonna make this a major plot-point later...maybe...possibly...hopefully... i'd make the same "eggman has a short memory" joke as before, but you're probably tired of that, so, yea. care to elaborate on ian's past as a fanfic writer? i keep hearing about it and frankly, i'm intrigued. as for starline, i don't mind his new power, but if this is gonna be permanent, then it really makes starline, well, less unique by comparison, since now he's just "speedy, strong, agile sonic character number 21". none of the characters seem to be doing spin attacks every 3 miliseconds, so OF COURSE it's gonna be better, this is just what happens when you remember your characters aren't just sentient bowling balls. i'm actually surprised you didn't critique starline's shitty editing job, it's like "yea, i'll delete all the footage! except for the one featuring sonic, that one stays." yea, zavok giving his own views on how warriors are superior to robots among other things is indeed very interesting.
@@alimowla3204 I mean so far wouldn't Eggman really have the time to build many new complexes so this Powercore creation dedicated base have to be at it earliest been a leftover from Forces so I don't really buy the "he just recently started again" excuse. Never mind that there would still be no reason why the Heroes wouldn't just build them them self given that plenty of machines from heroes should still exist and that the Résistance in Forces had enough capacitates to invent and supply all of its unites with Wispons (as well as with unseen but defiantly existing air ships) This perhaps would be all well and fine if his excuse for only brining the Omega-bot wasn't that he has hardly any resources left (Never mind that all the resources he still had left do cause problems for the Metal Virus are as both there are places the Restauration could have taken over for Tails to manufacture a cure or latter on to get via Warp Topaz all needed equipment to ether again creature a cure or EM-shield Metal Sonic and Gemerl) Please Eggman is a hardcore Gamer reaching level 99 is something he does in an bored afternoon after he already broke numerus Speed Running records (only for Sonic to top his new PB's the day latter). While I do know that Gemerl would just need to turn on Airplane mode but at that point didn't he know this and it only worked on Zenna anyway as Zavok just took him out with his EM-Powers shortly afterwards again anyway. Problem with that Theory is the reason Starlin gives for there existence as a "the creation of powercore's messes with Machines because there also have EM fields and there for need its construction Robots EM-Shields" meaning Eggman must have access to that kind of technology since Heroes as it was there were there where first used. It wouldn't work this time anyway after this story now makes a big deal about Eggman remembering Sonic and Tails gimmicks well to see through the attempted manipulations. What is there to say he in the early 2000's wrote Sonic fan comics with the longest running, most well known and most problems having one has to be his Sonic Other M comic (note this was written by him years before Metroid Other M). And it includes a lot of stupid things like: -Killing off just established characters to generate quick Drama -Having Amy as a small girl work as a Plot conveniences oracle that will always spoil what's happens next and hardly ever well be of any use for the team anyway -Having what is suppose to be Main Line Archie Sonic killed Civilians in Terrorist attacks without giving it a second thought. .Having what is suppose to be Mainline Archie Sonic quickly forget his old friends and world in favor of the one he ended up at the start of the series -Having your Evil knuckles just be Hitler -Have your a-moral heroes do stupid decisions like not killing of the strongest warriors of there enemies when there have the change despite them killing innocent civilians in Terrorist attacks by the bucked-load - Having entire story points just happen to contrive a way to kill of a Character for Drama -Having absolutely no quality assurance in the commissioned artwork as being on scheudel to mimic real Comic publication is more important -Having Sonic imminently fall in love with your "badass main girl" -Never questioning or going against the """good guys""" after admitting that there are terrorist and were planning to get Sonic killed because of how useless he used to be (quick explanation Sonic at the start traits bodies with an alternative reality version of im that was a total wimp because of one of Eggman's devices) And there are properly a few more bad things about it that I can't recall right now but that would be a pretty good start. I guess having not literally everyone do the same kind of attack really helps the fights. I mean Starlin is allowed to have flaws I mean he also failed to fix Eggman's mind, he currently is failing against his own Ego especially now were Zavok feats it so him not being perfect at video editing especially compared to Tails isn't that bad in my opinion. Its almost like he is now a unique Character than just the most blandest Bowser clone in all of the Lands.
@@rynobehnke8289 well if it's a left-over, shouldn't take too long to reestablish its original purpose. doubt it, if the main characters had the formula for how the power cores are created/work, they would've made some already, yes i know the real reason is because power cores are a gameplay mechanic that have no reason to come back, but in an in-universe context, this seems to be the case, well, unless ian decides to ruin it by having tails go "oh i knew how to make them all along, i just didn't bother.", but still, this isn't like the artificial emerald from sa2 where tails had something to properly study and make a copy out of. oh i don't freaking know, maybe he only _thinks_ he doesn't have enough resources, but then he takes a look at his list and finds "oh yea, there's this base that's untouched!", actually screw it, _all_ of eggman's bases are hidden underground and he must hit a button to bring them up to the surface, and he forgets how many of his bases are hidden, there's plot-hole fixed. okay sure, but still, why equip metal sonic with the EM-shield that will only be useful around a rare enemy type that eggman isn't likely to come across, when the black-shield is better is pretty much every way? come on, that's a waste of a slot. well, zavok is smarter than zeena, so that high IQ makes his EM-powers work through stupid plot-points. hmm, maybe having the EM-shield requires a trade off? like activating it uses the robot's energy that could've went into other kinds of (more useful) shields? cause construction robots wouldn't really have to be in combat, so they can get away with only having EM-shields. also, maybe this is the reason the resistance didn't make power cores, they actually _don't_ know how to make EM-shields, and would rather not fuck up their machines trying to create something that might be useful. also, why the fuck is a robot dinosaur considered a construction robot? like what? does it use its jaws to pick up crates or something? yea but sonic and tails are main game characters, mimic is just a comic spin-off character, he doesn't register as important on eggman's brain yet. note to self, never use "other M" when writing, literally anything. @@alimowla3204 Yes a leftover from FORCES aka these machines should have been around the entire time. It also means that during the time of confusion right after forces and the few weeks of peace between Metal Sonic and the Metal Virus Tails has all the time in the world to reverse engineer on of these babies from an old Eggman base to provide Amy and her Restoration some much needed aid. A Nice theory but Theories are mend to be BROCKEN! So what I mean with this is that our heroes mutabel time already showed that there could enter the EggNet with Tails also being able if given some time to over come potential firewalls (technically this part was in plothole in issue 34 to generate conflict for Sonic and Tails has something ,like these security features are a new thing while Sonic and Amy were at 2 previous occasions already showed to be able to easily enter the EggNet same for the Deathly Six as well as there EM-field manipulation shouldn't extent from the Lost hex all the way to Eggman's main servers on the planet) meaning there could just go to any of the bases to which there have the location to enter the system and figure out what Bases Eggman all has. Come on Metal has obviously a Gizoid Copy chip meaning Eggman just has to bit the R button before a fight and swap the shield from Black to EM when fighting the Zeti its not that hard. The Robot T-Rex certainly looked like he was running at full power despite using an EM-shield (beside there would have been a great emergency plan for Eggman in Lost Worlds). Towards your Resistant Comment. For one would this require that even Good old Tails can't make one nor reverse engineer on from one of Eggman's Robots that was equip with one. You know the same Tails that recently figured out a Zombie plage cure in under an hour with just one small lead. Also the EM stuff is a problem for Eggman because he is all about using Robots that wouldn't be nearly as big an issue for the Résistance as there are mostly organic people. I assume the Robo-Dino was mend as security and to not have your your Powercore facility being run over by the enemy as all your Robots fail do to the EM emersion would even the Combat Robots in there be needed to be equipped with EM shields. Sorry but Mimic's and Wisper's entire backstory depends on the Diamond Cutters being so much of a pain in Eggman's plans during Forces that he was going though with this big plan to get them all killed by an army of Shadow Androids (where did these guys after that flashback end up anyway?) and was willing to give Mimic an army worth of Badniks just to track down and kill Wisper. So both of there Characters don't really work when there are so meaningless and forgettable to Eggman. Its properly the most apparent with Fiona but I believe there were other such cases. When it comes to Fiona and Scourge in the official comic however is it quite clear how these 2 are written the way there are because of Other M. Fiona was Ian's badass love interested in other M so she had to be a badass Love interest in the Comics but as the comic's made her rather bland so far and the Heroes were unlike his fanfiction pretty good to shoes did he brock like all of the continuity to make her a Villain and the love interest to his reinvention of Evil Sonic. As a matter of fact many people will usually only point out the Silver Saga as times he took direct story ideas form his fanfiction for the main comic but something not many people mention or realize is that in the Scourge Lockdown arc was the way Scourge assembled his team a direct remake of how Sonic became team Leader of the the A-Moral Freedom Fighters in Other M (beside not killing the previous leader that is). Funny thing is Ian started at Archie's Sonic X book not the main series Comic. Hey don't dis the games like this there have way more motions in the post spin attack air time and early 3d games gave them much more options as well (bonce attack, light speed dash, tornado attacks, slights, roundhouse kicks repeatedly pushing until there die) I mean he was having Ego issues and Zavok was fueling them even more so him making in such a state such a critical mistake is okay in my opinion. Yes and it shows ones more how much better Forces could have been if the damn engine was actually somewhat optimized for momentum. And all the new elements tie things so good together not jus the fight with Chaos Zero that is just amazing but also all the little details that make the level ever so slightly less dead same for the modern Sonic Improve mode that actually injects some 3d and platforming into these levels. On a related note just the other day I finally finished Sonic Forces as for the first time the third infinite fight didn't crash on me YAY. But good god I can't believe how bad the last Classic Sonic stage was because its the one were the gameplay issues with him just show the hardest. Also it also reminded me that Sonic German voice actor was apparently told to be as bored as possible as I know this actor can do better because he was also Sonic's German Voice actor for Sonic X.
