If adjusting your truss rod does nothing........

In this video, I show you how to get A LOT MORE tension on your truss rod. An all too common issue with these old hex nuts - the adjustment piece (the piece you actually turn) is too short and does not create enough downward pressure to effectively straighten the rod ( which straightens the neck). The more pressure you put on the rod, the more it will straighten the neck. The straighter the neck is, the closer the strings will be to the frets. Many people enjoy playing a guitar with low action because it's easier to play (hurts your hands less). Straightening the neck on this guitar was easy with the addition of a common nut - watch the video! I will also address the bridge problem on this guitar in my next video. Btw, if you have a guitar with this style adjustment please tell me what it is. I will add your guitar brand to the search tags so others can find this video easily. There are literally thousands of guitars (acoustic and electric) with these old hex nuts with the same problem (all different brands and qualities). I got tons of videos coming shortly, so add me to your favorites if you like this type of garb!
Also, I want to say I KNOW....it's a slotted hex nut. Ever since I saw my first 70's strat with a 'bullet' nut adjustment, I've always called anything that resembles it the same thing. I know a true bullet style is cylidrical with an allen adjustment. Sorry if my terminology offends any proper instrument terminology die-hards.

Thank you! After a few guitar repairmen telling me that my truss road was at the end of it's thread so would require full replacement of rod in order to adjust the neck I'm baffled as to why they didn't know about this! Anyway, you do, and that's all that matters! Kia Ora from the Antipodes! (Aotearoa/New Zealand) :)

You can also get more use of a stubborn truss rod by, loosening the nut all the way. Clamp the neck to straighten it out, or go a little beyond straightening. Then tighten the nut to hold the clamping you did. Then adjust from there with the nut.

Jamblam , I'm refretting a "70's Stingray Bass and I could not get the truss rod to straighten out the neck . Watching your vid , I took the truss rod bullet out and grinded a nut into a thick washer . I put the bullet back on and shazam ... the truss rod got the neck straight with just enough relief . Thanks man , you made my day .
@jamblam
@jamblam 7 лет назад
Rick Salt That's great news! If you think you need even more straightening of the neck in general...you can always refret with slightly larger tangs too. That will stiffen the neck so that it has less natural flex/relief.

Awesome awesome awesome! Solved my issue. Slightly different application, but same concept: I have an early 90s Epi Les Paul. It has a 7mm hex bolt for the rod adjustment. Unlike the video, the end of the bolt is open, allowing the rod to go through the end. However, the pipe tool used was extremely shallow. So when the rod became flush with the end of the nut, the inside of the tool itself was preventing any further adjustment. Added three washers to allow a much bigger range of adjustment and BOOM! Neck adjusted with ease. Thanks so much!! Info on *how* the truss rod works seems very scare on the internet. Combine that with the fact that there is this "fear" associated with adjusting it, and you have a lot of confused people on this subject.

I used this system once, back when I was young and dumb. I tightened, then used spacers, then got a longer Alan wrench for leverage and cranked it some more. Then there was a loud POP! and I was holding the end of a broken truss rod in my hand. That 12 string had a short but informative life.

Awesome info. This worked perfect on my 1976 Yamaha FG295S. Good looking and sounding guitar that got left sitting a lot because the action was so high. I had even taken it to a local luthier that told me the truss rod is frozen, buy another guitar.. following your video I drilled out a nut and was able to adjust the neck to be playable again. Now I may buy and install a LRBaggs Lyric mic system. This guitar may start to be played in church in rotation with my Ovation. Thanks again.

Nice. You could also cut the capped end off the bullet (at the point where the threads end inside) and use a deep socket wrench for adjusting. That way the threads can come all the way through the bullet and keep going.

The "piece of metal" could be called a ferrule. An alternative, if there is no need for the thickness of the spacer nut, is to use flat washers shimmed as required.

good trick, trying this on a vintage jazz bass neck with truss at the heel, it's the old split style "X" type nut that's completely pancaked outwards. but there not alot of room to fit another nut or washer around the truss threads inside the hole like you show, so the initial hole needs to be bored out a lil.

The truss rod in my Squier Jazz must've been a fluke or it's a used instrument rather than brand new because the rod never worked to tighten the the neck at all. When I needed it most to get rid of some up bow the tightening did nothing and now the nut is stripped. It's a double action and I do not want to take the fretboard off to fix what never should have been broken.

TRUSS ROD ARE NOT USED FOR STRING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT. A truss rod corrects the bow in the neck, also called relief. Strings tension pull the neck and creates an up bow. Tightening the truss rod counteracts that by creating a back bow. You want your neck dead flat or with a slight relief (up bow). Depends on your taste and your string gauges (low gauge means more amplitude so it needs a bit more relief). To set your strings height, you need to act on your bridge saddle height (bone saddle for acoustics, set screws on most electrics). (OK it's super late but this info can be useful for someone else)
@reese4379
@reese4379 11 месяцев назад
@@stratocactusyeah but if it has too much relief, the action will be super high no matter what you do at the bridge.
@stratocactus
@stratocactus 11 месяцев назад
@@reese4379 true but it's not the 1st purpose of the trussrod as many people think it is, leading to poor setups. 1st make sure the relief in the neck is OK, then act on the bridge height.
@reese4379
@reese4379 11 месяцев назад
@@stratocactus Yeah for sure. Only adjust the truss rod to fix the action if you've already adjusted it at the bridge. But realistically, if he knows about the truss rod, he probably knows about the bridge. His truss rod nut is probably stripped and not adjusting properly.

@jamblam
@jamblam 10 лет назад
OK I found this for you. Making A Guitar Truss Rod It explains how the truss rod works. Basically, applying pressure to the metal, causes the metal to straighten out, thus straightening the neck with it. There could be a few things wrong though, causing the neck to be too bowed. The top of the guitar behind the bridge could have developed a bellying-up problem. You may also have the bridge saddle too high. Hope this helps. Sorry I can't see it so I can't really tell you what's going on.

I have the opposite problem! On a Ibanez RS130 the bullet tip on my truss Rod tightens fine and the maple neck is really straight! With 11s it’s .20 at the 8 th fret and with 10s it’s about the same! So I can get more neck relief?

How can I achieve this in the opposite direction? The neck is back bow’d and needs relief but the truss rod doesn’t seem to have any action in the opposite direction (clockwise if looking at it from the bridge perspective). It was cranked to the left, back bowing it, and when I went to try and add relief, the nut loosened and then seemed to get looser and looser as if it was gonna fall off and wasn’t actually turning the rod. (The nut/threads aren’t maxed out either) it’s a Japanese 1987 ESP mirage

I have an old aria acoustic guitar with a truss rod located in the headstock. When I remove the truss rod cover all I see is a regular nut that is at the bottom of the rod with some threads exposed. There is no eggcorn or bullet that is in front of nut like you have in the video or possible way to fit a socket in to tighten it since there is no clearance in front of the rod because the wood head stock is in front of it. It can probably be accessed with a open ended wrench. I need to straighten the neck. it has a bow in it and the strings are pretty high from the fret board. Any input?

MrShadowofthewind wish I could help you out more, but unfortunately, it depends. Could be one of a few things. Also, depending on your guitar, some truss rods actually tighten the opposite way - rare but have seen it. Best that you see a video of how a truss rod is put inside a guitar neck. That should help you understand better what your problem might be.

jamblam I think that the thing you detatched and put a washer behind got off the rod on my neck, wich would explain why it's so loose and can be moved back and forth slighty, and won't tighten the rod, so how do i get it back on the rod ?

The threaded coupler can be open on both sides like shown in this picture.

does anyone know where I can buy a truss rod nut just like the one he's using the truss rod wrench bar on? I seem to be only finding bullet style and that's not gonna work for me.

Sure - it would apply to anything that has a truss rod of this nature.

@jamblam
@jamblam 7 лет назад
Robert W I'm just calling things nuts to move people's butts on the dance floor. Mostly, everybody over there. But yes you're right, it's being used as a spacer. I'll redo the video and bleep out where necessary and put spacer.
