I'm still recovering from the Great Wall of China marathon a few days ago but decided to go out and explore Beijing anyway. While walking around, I had a think about what failure means to me and how this run affected my attitude.

Jord, I enjoyed ur tour in Beijing so much, it's so relaxing. Great videos, great vibes, no complaining, no bias. U will have a great life ahead of u. God has his plan.

To all the Chinese out there I too just returned from a trip there and had the best time......My tip for Jord is join a tour as the one I went on was ridiculously cheap. Yes, U may have to go to a couple of factories owned by the Chinese Gov HOWEVER all the interesting people and places U go to make up for that. Also the couple of Chinese factories U go to were not that bad...... They teach U a lot about how their product is made ( E.g. tea) and there is no hard sell. ......The amount of places we visited in just over a week was unbeleivable and U get really, really nice hotels and breakfast too Jord ( If U R a single traveller they join U up with someone on the tour to reduce accomodation expenses or U pay just a little extra and have your own room......Jord should do his homework coz i did and was aware about the tea ceremony scam.....Everything else though is really good.

I admire your determination and hope you succeed the next time around. I cringed watching your marathon video, seeing you in such obvious agony. That thousand-steps section alone would have ended me on the spot. Love your channel!

Been a number of times Jord. Freezin on the wall in winter & the stair incline is not insignificant. Called my Mum from the wall... 14-second call as I had my glove off & my hand literally hurt from the cold. Food generally uninspiring. Brilliant channel & an awe-inspiring effort. You look very familiar to me when I saw your video about Beijing Marathon yesterday. But I just couldn't figure out in what previous videos I've seen you. Until you mentioned Dali in this video. And I suddenly recall that you are the one who had challenged Tiger Leaping Gorge. Haha. I loved those videos. Great to see you back to China again! (but the "first impression" video confused me yesterday LoL)

Those scammers only aim at small groups of or single tourists most of whom are foreigners. They are actually really rare and are always mixed into famous tourist site crowds. If you meet one next time just say to them ‘Bù xūyào, gǔn!’ loudly (I don’t need this, get away from me!), and they should be leaving from you because the site guards have an eye on them. Scammer are all around in famous tourist sites in the world. I even once encountered one in Japan.

The Beijing Hutongs are worth staying in. You can find great deals online. We stayed in a modern and beautiful one with a strong Japanese influence and beautiful courtyard right nearby Tiananmen Square and one of the famous walking streets. The hutongs have signs up as part of the tourist walks. Some hidden temples with history in both Chinese and English. Also at the start of each street is a map of the local hutong complex and which street you are currently standing on to help navigate it. Funny story. On my last night in Beijing, I went out for emergency supplies at 1am and got lost because the cold of winter drains your mobile battery too fast. Forgot to bring my battery pack. Could remember the Chinese name of the street but was hopelessly lost wandering through the hutong streets walking in circles. Found a hotel back on the main street and they let me use one of those pay charging stations for free and I scribbled down a map of directions from the phone. Baidu maps is so helpful to navigate the hutongs.

My understanding is that as a foreigner you can still buy entrance tickets through the "Passport Window" by the Southern gate for the Forbidden City.

4:43 Life is very fast-paced in the major cities of China. Expensive too. So if someone shows particular interests in talking to you for no apparent reasons, he/she is almost certainly after your money. They don't travel for more than 2 hours in the morning and stand in the crowd for hours so they can casually talk to foreigners. That's their business. 😅 It is a different story though if you get lost and try to ask for help from random people, that's when you will feel the hospitality of Chinese people. Enjoy your time in Beijing. 😀

This is not what authentic hutong is like; it's a commercialized version for tourists. If you walk north from JingShan Park, you will encounter hutong where local people actually live.

@@BingDwenDwen Serpentza gives true and balanced views on China. Mainland chinese hate him because they hate hearing the truth from a laowai. They are too sensitive to be mature about hearing someone else's views about their country
@BingDwenDwen
@BingDwenDwen 5 лет назад
@@FoodforThought12345678dsds Whether SerpentZA gives a balanced view or not can be debated and I won't go into that. But can you show me an example of an oversea chinese expat going on youtube bad mouthing the host country that he or she lives in? I bet you cannot give me any example. That is just my point. I am not saying China is perfect and in fact it is far from perfect, but just like any other country is not perfect. The point is that SerpentZA as a guest is rude to point out anything negative. You don't goto someones house as a guest and go complaining about their house. Worst of all, SerpentZA is complaining on youtube in english, thats like talking bad behind the back of chinese while they don't even know about it, because youtube is blocked for most chinese. Not only is it rude, but SerpentZA doesnt contribute anything in a better chinese society. That is the problem most chinese got with him, not his message, but his attitude.
@FoodforThought12345678dsds
@FoodforThought12345678dsds 5 лет назад
@@BingDwenDwen Why should their be chinese on youtube? It is blocked in china, even if they are an expat in America, they are not familiar to using it, there would more likely use bilibili or a site they know. Even so, there are some chinese born in China, like Mike Chen, who live in America, but they just talk about how bad Mainland china is, lol. And when you say serpentza is talking behind the chinese back, that is the issue with mainland chinese, they are overly sensitive and do not understand that people should be allowed their own opinions whether it is good or bad. Also, of course he will use youtube, he is a westerner and that is the most popular western video site. What else is he meant to use, bilibili? I am from England, and if any foreigner comes and live in England, after a few months, they are treated like they are a "londoner", you don't label them as foreigners. You just get to know them as people and friends, not making them feel constantly like an outsider. And if they have opinions about England, whether about the food, culture, people, government etc we welcome it and usually agree with them, or even if don't agree with some points, you can have a mature discussion about it with no bad feelings. That is what mainland chinese need to learn, is that they need to accept that people can give an opinion about their country, whether it is good or bad, and analyse what they say, and maybe think about why they think something is good or bad and see if they agree with it or not and if thst thing can be changed in the future. I don't blame the mainland chinese for being emotionally immature and overly sensitive, it's because they have been taught from a vary young age from all the chinese propoganda in school to protect their motherland and that they are number one and the middle of the world. I hope they can improve this in the future so the rest of the world stop seeing them as cry babies who can't handle hearing anything which isn't goos things said about their country
