As for the birds, if they live near the beach or the rocks / harbour, it’s “their food”, you’re just holding it for them. If you turn your back or just look at someone else to talk, they swoop in. Magpies are rare, but crows and seabirds are common enough. Bats tend to migrate and swarm around the coast as well. It can be overwhelming at first, but walk where the locals walk. Keep your eyes up and down. It’s not unusual to see birds take an entire hotdog from a child that’s eating it mid-bite, just fly past and take the whole sausage and bread, then discard the sausage.

Mata is 100% right about Australian dads. My sister found an Australian husband, and my brother-in-law probably takes on more of the parenting duties than she does.
