While to me this sort of video is just a chance to see a well-polished argument stated cleverly, it doesn't mean much to be at this point. It's a bit heart-warming to know it helps people out there.

+Mattothee clockwork in this case means it can run without any intervention. It means that reality isn't constantly falling apart and everything follows the same rules. For example, if suddenly gravity stopped working, then it would not be a clockwork universe (unless of course gravity occurs in cycles, but we haven't seen that, so it likely doesn't). A clockwork universe can be unexpected. It can change. However, it will not be unexpected if one knows the mechanics behind it. If humanity were to learn everything about the universe, we would be able to predict everything that goes on, from solar flares to galaxy collisions to gamma ray bursts.

I can't either, but you're underestimating the power of human stupidity.

Most religious people don't question their faith and don't really want to test it since they're happy living in their own version of reality.

@@mako9579 Back when I saw this for the first time, I emailed it to my pastor in a panic. I remarked that I had no explanation for the claims & counterpoints therein. He referred me to a scientifically minded friend who was an expert in apologetics. For the next year, I watched many apologetics videos and balanced them with atheists rebuttals, and rebuttals of those. I spend a long time listening to both sides, getting a balanced perspective, and taking time. Mind you, at the time I was a young earth creationist and attended a Christian college. I saw this shattering video at the end of my freshman year. The summer following I started to turn Deist: I believed that a God exists, but I couldn't find adequate reason to believe it was the Judaic God who sent Jesus down to sacrifice himself. The primacy of Earth and Israel in a boundless universe made little sense to me. Sophomore year it hit me harder. I was back at Christian college, forced to go to "chapel" hosted by the school 3 times a week, an hour each. Nothing is more painful than watching your friends worship passionately and seem to have spiritual experiences when you can't feel anything. And trust me, I've tried. But I always felt like I was faking it. None of this felt genuine. Many of the sermons were generic, insipid "love your neighbor" platitudes, and after a while you've heard 'em all. I spent my time in chapel practicing vocabulary or sketching, or I'd put in an earbud and listen to atheist youtube channels and such. You'd be wrong if you thought I didn't spiral. You'd feel insane, too, if everyone except you believed, if it was taboo for you to talk openly about it, or to find anyone to open up to, or to even find anyone to date. Since I didn't date in high school, and my unbelief barred me from college girls, I graduated college without ever having a girlfriend. My once solid belief in young earth creationism also crumbled gloriously. I had zero excuse for the starlight problem. I once brought this up to my father. "I have doubts, you know? Like how could the universe be 6,000 years old if it takes millions if not billions of years for starlight from distant galaxies to reach Earth?" You know what he said? "Don't let one thing sway you from the faith" and worse he said "I'm afraid I'm gonna lose my son." I questioned creationism and did not find evolution wanting. I am happy to believe this wondrous truth. I can continue, if you reply.

***** I dont call myself a christian I was brought up with the title. Like a lot of christians I attended church and helped out during events for charity. Christianity is just a byproduct of our higher consciousness - just as most religions are. Because we can visualise our own deaths we would like to beleive there is something waiting for us beyond the grave. It has just as much weighting as father christmas. Im glad I have gained lucidity because living under a lie for your life is pathetic. I hope you gain the same clarity as I have, John, then you will see the religion for what it is.

+John B Very eloquently put, I would expect a response like that from a christian. I don't dispute the fact that Jesus walked the earth. I only dispute the associated statements from the bible. Why is the bible "open to interpretation" surely the word of god would be unambiguous? I find that one's belief of god is a support for their fear of death which seems to be a problem with intelligent organisms such as ourselves.

The concept that SOMETHING can be created out of NOTHING defies the first law of thermodynamics, the law of conservation of energy. If I tell you to make me a hamburger out of thin air, can you do it? Same concept applies to the beginning of the universe. It is absolutely impossible for an atom or a material to pop out of nowhere. Second off, the scientific method is consists of systematic OBSERVATION, measurement, experiment, and forming a hypothesis. Darwin never observed a change of KIND of species, neither has anyone else had. To our observation so far, MICRO-evolution exists and I agree with that. MACROevolution involving a different change of kind of species is bogus and has never been proven. How is that even remotely scientific? Thirdly, IF we really are just a random collection of chemicals formed by mathematically impossible chance over billions of years, HOW can we trust our own reasoning processes and the thoughts that we think? How can we trust our five senses? HOW are we all on the same level of conscience? Impossible! Everyone would have a different conscience and different senses if we came from nothing but particles and atoms. That prompts the question, what makes human beings so special compared to other forms of life? Why are we the ones on the highest level of consciousness? If there is no God and it followed the theoretical law of evolution of atoms, this world would be COMPLETE MADNESS. There would be no order! There would be no sense of morality! We would all have no meaning and have no sense or objective of finding meaning. The universe we live in could have taken many different forms and scientists have approached a consensus that there are dozens of fundamental features of our universe that had to be precisely the way they are for life to be possible. Even if the big bang is possible, Roger Penrose, a mathematical physicist, explains that the explosive force of the big bang had to be less than one part in 10^10^123 in what it was in order for the overall precision of life. Stuff like logic and love exists, yet it is not made of matter. If this universe is strictly material as it evolved from nothing but a set of atoms, how can logic and love exist? It is NOT made out of matter. The proof that God exists is that without Him, you couldn’t prove anything! Emotions, feelings, love, hatred, envy, logic, and rationality must be spiritual forces. Now that begs the question, where is the SOUL going to go after death? Orderly, mathematical laws of nature that describe the consistent clockwork operation of the universe are exactly what we would expect given that Christ upholds all things by the Word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). If the universe were really the chance product of a big bang, then why would it obey laws? Where did the mathematical laws come from? If you are just a random assemblage of atoms and chemicals that evolved over time, how does life keep its form? How can you explain the regularity of the universe? This is another thing that we take for granted without realizing how utterly remarkable it is. We just assume that when we wake up tomorrow, all of our organs are going to carry on in the regular stable way that it always has. Think about all of the predictions that you need to come true even in just the next 5 minutes in order to live an orderly and coherent life. We just assume that the objects in our vicinity are going to remain more or less where they are. That gravity is going to continue to do its thing, that atoms and molecules will continue interacting the way they always have, the color of things is going to remain constant, the Earth will remain completely constant. Why do we assume that the universe is going to continue to operate with regularity? Now you might answer, “well it always has in the past.” Well that’s not an answer that’s just the question. Why has it always done so in the past and why do we continue to expect it to do so in the future? If I ask you to reach into a bag full of thousands of M&Ms but say there was only one red M&M in the bag and pull it out with your eyes closed you would not give yourself good odds at doing that. The same is true when we consider the regularity of the universe. There are all sorts of crazy things that physics can do tomorrow (an infinite number) but there is only way that it can the stay the same, second after second, day after day, and year after year. Every second, we are reaching into that bag blindfolded and everytime over and over and over we are pulling out that one red M&M. We are just taking for granted that the universe would continue to operate with regularity. As Einstein put it, “the most incomprehensible thing about the universe, is that it is comprehensible.” Now, if God exists, then we would have an explanation for the regularity of the universe because the universe is regulated by someone who CARES for us deeply and therefore designed the universe so that we could live orderly and coherent lives that we can find meaning in. You have to agree with the fact that worship if a part of human nature. Whether it is God, the state, or ourselves,you are always worshiping SOMETHING to your appeal. Truth is, we were made to worship our creator, but many people go walking their own ways. Atheists will come at us with logical, scientific, and moral objections to the existence of God. But who owns logic? Who owns science? Who owns morality? God does. In Romans 11:36, it states, "From God, through God, and to God are all things." When you are trying to refute the existence of God, you are trying doing so with stolen goods from God. Atheists reject God because they think that they understand more than God. They think they understand how he works when in reality, God is omnipotent and omniscience. Truth is, if I can fit the infinite God in my three-pound brain, he would not be worth worshiping. The first ten words of the Bible states the creation logically. In order for our universe to function, you need time, matter, and space to come to existence at the same instant. If there were no matter or space, where would you put it? If there were matter and space but no time, when would you put it? You cannot have time, space, or matter independently. Genesis 1:1 answers that in ten words. "In the beginning (that’s time), God created the Heavens (that’s space) and the Earth (that’s matter)." A trinity of trinities has been created instantaneously. Time is past present future, space has length, width, height, and matter has solid, liquid, and gas. The God who created them must be outside of them. If he is limited by time, he is not God. He is above it, beyond it, in it, through it, and he’s unaffected by it. Romans 1:19-20 makes this clear: “because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them . . . so that they are without excuse.” Those who worship the creation over the creator, let me tell you, your worship would not benefit yourselves in the long run. Jesus states in Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and Earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

+John B AS this video pointed out very well, A god is not integral to the universe, and has done a poor job of revealing himself. Yahweh also very much so resorts to blackmail and a rewards system. Non believers are supposedly tortured for an eternity and those that do believe supposedly recieve eternal happiness. The bible promotes slavery and intolerance, so I don't care if it also says that god loves all, because an all loving god could not possibly promote slavery and intolerance. Followers also do not love him of their own volition. They are demanded to love him or suffer consequences.

I was a very devout Christian at one point. My free time was saturated with Bible-studying, praying long prayers, and going to church. It was definitely not an easy transition, especially given how much I had worked up in several Christian groups. But today, I am happier than ever. Rather than just trusting that everything will be "handled by God," I feel far more dominant in my everyday decisions. I can think truthfully about things without feeling like God is observing my thoughts, not fear hell fire because of a mere sin, and can actually use my free time to my advantage. While I support everyone's right to believe in whatever they want, I feel slightly guilty to; they gimp themselves of the beauty of reality.

***** The following is my guess: Before there were kings, the rulers of a tribe were probably religious leaders. Using the names f gods the religious leader would control his people. The gods don't want you to steal, the gods don't want you to screw my wife, the gods don't want you to kill your neighbor, the gods want you to kill the other people because they are different than us, etc. The eating of a fruit in the Bible story sounds pretty ridiculous, but I guess it shows how intolerant that particular god is. One mistake and you get kicked out. It wants ABSOLUTE obedience and is not interested in the little people's opinions. The flood story is bizarre. Angels coming to Earth and screwing Earth women and they give birth to giant kids. I'm not sure how the kids came out of their vaginas or why angels would want to have children with women and not men or do angels have sperm. Out of all the places to explore, they come to Earth for fucking. But again, the story focuses on "do what I say or I kill you". In other words, you have to obey the puppet master (the guy holding the strings is the religious leader). Why would a god just sit around and do nothing and take action in the end? The religious leader is also a guy who wants peace, who wants his people to treat each other with respect. "As it goes-on to state that the very Kingdom of God will crush the world governments in the establishments of peace on earth. :" ==The idea is that that particular god is real and that the jews are in the right group and should not leave that religion.

Every one of them had a long, logical talk with themselves, analyzing the evidence, not going on what made them FEEL better, but what they know to be true and what they know is impossible to be true. At the end of the day, I think you know there's no God and you're trying to make yourself feel better. No one can MAKE you use critical thinking, and many vocal atheists are assholes the same way many vocal religious people are assholes.

I'm neither saying the bible is wrong or right based on Catholicism. Believe whatever you want to believe, I'm not going to stop you, but I don't think you presented a balanced argument if you make the claim that this video is "made-up entirely of false premises and logical fallacies" when it could also be "open to interpretation". Additionally, if it is "open to interpretation" then I could say that the bible is contradictory for my own interpretation of rational thought. But like I said, believe whatever you want to believe. I couldn't care any less.

Just because I say that there are contradictions to my own understand, doesn't mean I think the bible is inherently wrong. Look, I don't care what you believe in, so there is no point have an argument whether the bible is right or wrong.

Number 1, you made the claim that the video presented "false premises and logical fallacies". Number 2, you act as if my original comment is meant to be interpreted as fact. I made this comment reflecting on *personal* experience. Number 3, I am in agreement with you that the bible may be "open to interpretation". In addition to my original comment reflecting on personal experience, I can make a claim that the bible contains contradictions. That would neither make the bible factually right or wrong to *my own understanding*. The inverse holds as well: If a thing is not true, careful examination will make the untruth of it more apparent. Therefore, if you value truth over belief, close scrutiny is a virtue. +Shawn James I was Christian for years as well. I started seeing the truth after really examining what the Bible says. The more I read it and went to to church the more I began to realize that to me it seemed crazy. It is liberating to break away from what you have been told since a child and to think on your own. I need to get me some atheist friends. I love having these types of conversations. I live in the South so it is hard.

+Pippy The Magic Pencil Sharpening Toilet I wrote a paper on the same subject in 7th grade for my religion class, but my views at the time were very much influenced by Assassin's Creed (Mainly "The Truth" segment of AC2). Luckly, our religion teacher was more of a philosopher and pointed out the fallacies in my paper. I guess I was lucky to have a teacher that was so anti-theistic as my "religion" teacher who really tought us to think and question everything rather than listening and believing. She was an amazing woman.

Most people who have studied the Bible will identify that the arguments in the presentation are invalid to begin with. With that said, it's also worth noting that the video presentation did not address the necessity of God. And that though the author cited the argument for fine-tuning, it is also worth noting that he did not present any objections for said argument.

Hi Victor, thanks for the compliment. You'd be correct in saying that I'm a theist. Though perhaps not in the classic sense from a Christian perspective. As for replying to almost every comment, I really can't say. Though I really enjoy the statements and discussions that come from this particular video - as I think it invokes some very significant questions on the topic of the existence of God and the many arguments that go along with it.

JohnBee Yeah, I also enjoyed reading the arguments as well. I just wish more theist were more like you. Also there was a thread were you stated that Darkmatter created his own version of God and basically debunked his own arguments. I think Darkmatter only wanted to refute the famous talking points made by theist that do not have a profound concept on God. I don't believe he intended to debunk the actual teachings of the bible. Which I guess you could say he's attacking low hanging fruits but his intentions were to convince average people, which he succeeded.

I think you're right on the video and the Bible - I began to suspect this was most likely the case, after watching several other video's from the same author. With that said, the most common reason for bringing-up the matter of credibility to the source, relate to comments made toward the Christian faith. Such as; "this video should be seen by Christians, Bible classes, etc" Which leads me to add that the video wouldn't likely relate to the Bible as you yourself appear to be saying. Which is not necessarily a bad thing if you think about it, as I've come to the conclusion that video's such as these can prove to be an excellent sources of reflection in terms of challenging one's own faith and understanding toward matters. PS. I find the discussions pertinent to none-believers to be far more beneficial than with other believers. Though it helps if one can adhere to the fact that indifference is not only acceptable but very much a part of the arrangement. There are far too many people who simply cannot accept indifference from either side it seems.

Most anyone who's read the Bible would easily identify with the inconsistencies in the presentation. And so it's unlikely that this video would accomplish anything in that regard.

I know this comment is really old by this point but i cant help to add to this haha. So a while ago i had this guy on my friends list on Facebook. He was (probably still is) really smart but he also was very, very christian and he LOVED to post stuff that essentially boiled down to "look i smart guy i believe god therefore it must be true". You could barley go 2 days without seeing something he wrote. Anyway since he seemed like a pretty intelligent and sorta nice person (a religius guy that REALLY believes but you could stikk talk to) i wanted to hear his two cents on the arguments presented in this series so i hit him up on messenger and asked if i could hear his thoughts (i was mainly interested in what he had to say about this specific ep) and he agreed so i sent it to him. Fast forward 15 or so minutes and he says that it mainly seems like some sort of propaganda almost. Like it was made by someone who already had their mind set on what they thought. It seemed he couldnt even get his head around the concept that god might not even really be god and he almost seemed offended lol. Not sure where this was going but i felt like adding it haha

As an ex-Christian, I agree that this video may be too deep for them to understand if they are like the average Christian. If this was sent to me while I was still in the religion, I would have considered it as a "non credible source" because it's promoting Atheism. For the viewer to be able to watch objectively, they'd have to be open to other ideas, which many fundamentalists / extremist Christians (sometimes even the moderates) are not because they fear it will threaten their faith.

It's kind of like when someone makes a fictional character. A person cannot create a character that is smarter than themself or has more knowledge than themself. Clearly the mind of the god that is depicted in the bible is not above that of the human mind as evidently shown by his actions. His solutions to problems there shouldn't even be there since he is omnipotent and can see the future (which doesn't even make sense for him since he is timeless) are far from perfect. He is falible just like humans. The reason the god of the bible makes mistakes like having to solve problems to complete his grand plan showing his plan is not perfect otherwise there would be no problems could be - possibly that he was created by something that makes mistakes and is not perfect.

I will first clarify in which sense he makes mistakes. A being that is omnipotent which the christian god is according to the bible would have reality be exactly as it wanted it to be. It wouldn't be displeased with anything, nothing would be against what it wanted reality to be. Clearly the christian god is some times displeased according to the bible. When Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge the christian god was displeased. When the earth was corrupted and the christian god flodded it the earth was not as it wanted it to be. The christian god punishes those who do not think he exists to the worst possible fate implying they do not act according to what it wants. So reality is not always what the christian god wants it to be which is evident by it being displeased. To a being that is perfect and omnipotent anything that doesn't perfectly go according to it's plan is a mistake. Yet everything would go according to it's plan because it is omnipotent. That also begs the question if it actually makes sense that it is omnipotent when you look at how it acts in the bible. It's similar to saying that you're good following it by torturing and raping a todler. It doesn't make sense and it's not believable. According to the bible the christian god is holy good but that is not evident by the world we live in. Millions of people die each year by causes no other human has an effect on like earthquakes and tsunamies meaning the evil isn't justified by free will, only the christian god can be hold accountable for this evil. Omnipotens itself is an asbolutely absurd concept that if applied to reality would create an infinite number of paradoxes and contradictions which would be possible because of omnipotens itself. A completely illogical and ridiculous concept. Clearly an idea and nothing that has a place in reality. That's the same reason why when the concept is applied to a character described in a book the story told makes no sense at all.

God is the answer they've chosen as to why their lives are shitty *now*, but there is hope for the future. Since the hope that God will save them is tied to their struggle, revealing that there is no God is akin to destroying all hope, and making their lives meaningless. In the most depressing cases, people look forward to the afterlife because that's the only happy ending they can imagine.

You can still help them in other ways. If they think prayer and church are the only things that can help, you can show them that they can still take control of their lives *without* waiting for things to magically get better. That they can still make a first step, or continue where they left off on achieving their goals *before* they started using religion as a crutch. And in the case of clinical depression, to get help with a professional who can help them sort through what went wrong, so they can move forward once again. You may or may not have tried these things already, but if they didn't seem to work before, there is still hope. While there may not be a grand plan for anyone in the greater scheme of things, all that means is we are the makers of our own destiny.

But the idea that only one tiny group of people, out of the thousands of societies that populated the earth, maintained knowledge of him is just ridiculous. It makes much, much more sense to accept that the Jews had their own god, of their own making, just as each society had its own gods of its own making. Maybe it is because God gave man a choice between following the eternal truths or following a life without God, and with Satan and/or the fallen angels. The choices that man make are left up to the individual. The whole point of this video is to show that the extent of revelation for this God was in a relatively small area in the Middle East. Im atheist, but I don't agree with you there. I think people are violent amd ruthless by nature. There would still be war, rape and murder. Maybe some negative aspects would be gone, but certainly not noteworthy. Still, yeah religion isn't my way, but look at all the good things religion has done; arcitecture, art, philoshophy, education. Many universities in the middle ages were funded by the church. See? Religion has done its fair share of good and bad things. Nowadays i think religion is redundant and useless.

With countless passages about killing people for not believing like you do, killing people for not following frivolous laws. Human sacrifices to appease their sky god etc. And all of those things listed, can very well have been done without religion. architecture, art, philosophy, and especially education. Actually it make perfect sense based on the details provided in the narratives - for example; The first humans labeled 'in GOD's image'; [one man, one women], and who were themselves in a personal relationship with GOD show that GOD revealed Himself to His very first human children. That said, the text shows that being in GOD's image, consisted of a refinement process, in-that humans were products of development(the earth), of which all living things were; plants, animals etc. Following this, the narrative then goes-on to recount the fall of mankind due to willful sin, and the corruption of their compatibility with GOD, this in-turn, resulting in their expulsion from the garden and the tree of life, which was used to symbolize eternal life with GOD. Following this, this first human pair, would bare sufficient children to achieve self-sustaining procreation, whereas the subsequent nations that followed, would not all recognize or walk with the one true GOD, but rather, where some turned to false gods, thus leading to divisions, wickedness and conflict. Therefore and with that being said, the notion that GOD would only reveal Himself to specific persons following the fall makes perfect sense, as there were those with no desires to walk with GOD, and in-favor of alternative moral law givers(or gods). And moreso, where it is by compatible hosts that those seeking to walk with GOD were drawn to Him, and that the the prophecy of salvation was carried out - which is interesting if you think about it, as that is the point of the Bible narrative. In addition to this, it's also worth noting that there were various persons throughout Bible history who found favor in GOD's eyes, and who entered into personal relationships with Him. Some tribal, others independent, though more notably, always based on compatibility with regard to GOD's teachings and commandments. Whatever the case, the notion that GOD would have limited His interactions and revelations to a specific people makes perfect sense, as it was by means of such people that we find GOD's will was accomplished - which is precisely the type of behavior we'd expect from an all-knowing entity whose will was accomplished through Creation itself. Think of it this way, first a religion starts, but they don't write down their stories on paper, they just pass it down by ear, and with each generation and each time it's told, something small, changes, then after lets say 100 to 1000 years, the original story, isn't going to be the same, which ends up creating different beliefs about the exact same story, that's been told by ear for thousands of years. Having said that, I would also question why so many seem willing to take the author to his word, as it would seem that the majority of those claiming to have benefited from the presentation, do so without validating the arguments, or that these appear largely invalid with respect to the texts from which the information was taken.

Likewise, why conclude that faith in one thing without validation justify putting faith in another under the same conditions? For example, why assume that the information in this video be any more reliable than some other source?
