In the fast-paced world of the 21st century, staying mentally well and focused can be a real challenge. We're bombarded with distractions, digital noise, and the temptation of quick pleasures. This is where minimalism comes in as a helpful practice, offering a way to find clarity, peace, and a more fulfilling life 🌱
Think about the movie "Limitless." The main character, who gains extraordinary mental abilities, starts his journey to success by cleaning his home. This shows us that our surroundings affect our mental state. When our living space is neat and tidy, it helps us stay focused and feel better.
I've been on a minimalist journey for about six or seven years now. It hasn't always been easy, and I've learned some important lessons along the way. Minimalism isn't just about getting rid of stuff; it's a step-by-step process that changes not only our physical space but also our minds and lifestyles 🪜
Minimalism has a few key ideas: getting rid of a lot of things, slowing down, being careful with money, and living with intention. It's about making life simpler and more in line with what really matters to us. The Nordic way of life, with its focus on simplicity and usefulness, fits well with this idea. Digital minimalism is also part of it, helping us take control of our digital lives.
My journey has taught me that minimalism isn't just a trend; it's a choice to make life more organized and improve our mental well-being. You don't have to do everything at once. You can start with small steps, like decluttering your space, simplifying your daily routine, or spending your money more thoughtfully. These steps add up and make your life simpler and more satisfying 😊
In the end, minimalism isn't just a way of life; it's a philosophy that changes how we find happiness in our modern world. It's a foundation for clarity, focus, and a happier life in a world that often feels too busy and complicated.
So if I had to start over as a minimalist, these are the 10 steps I would take 💡

I graduated my mechanical engineering in 2006 and kept all my books, documents related to my studies, every calculation, every drawing and exam, etc. in the basement. It filled two large shelves. Only last year did I manage to emotionally separate myself from them and throw them away (but not the books), as I know that as an educator I'll never look at technical documents on mechanical engineering again😊. It was a sad separation somehow, as I prefer paper and pens above all other things. I just like paper and pens so much. It was funny too, as I looked through some of the documents, memories came flooding back. Few of my professors passed away. One of them was my favorite professor in chemistry and physics. I asked myself how I managed to go through this jungle of numbers, symbols, lines and equations for 5 years😅. When I read my thesis on sensors, I felt "dizzy". So many complicated calculations and experiments. However, it was still liberating, this separation. Over time, I notice that I quickly become overwhelmed when I stand in front of a full wardrobe or in front of the pile of shoes (even though I'm not a shopping queen - i hate shopping 😅) and things... It tires me out very quickly and makes me nervous, so I keep getting rid of things that are overwhelming me. And I feel good. Thanks Seve for your work and share. I really like to listen to you 🍀. Love from Germany 😊

For purchasing physical items, I use the rule of letting go of two items for every one item bought. This excludes consumables like food.

I feel so strongly about minimalism that I could write a whole book! My husband and I have been minimalists since 1991. We had a house fire, and for insurance purposes I had to list and name a price for EVERY SINGLE ITEM. Since we had two children and I babysat for six more children, I had so many toys, coloring books, story books, etc! Not to mention all the music albums, video tapes, craft supplies, and clothes! It was an absolute horror! At this time in our lives, we still love the simple life. I can tidy up the whole house so easily, and moving is a breeze too. It's easy to find things without doing a big search. And lastly, we know that our sons won't have to deal with a mountain of belonging when we pass on.

Yeah I 100% agree. It makes you evaluate what's really important to you and what isn't outside of your home too ✌️ Thank you so much!

Limitless is such a great film, I’ve not seen it for ages! Fantastic video mate. I couldn’t really be called a minimalist, more essentialist, but I’m pretty proud of how I’ve done over the last couple of years.

Super video Seve, I believe it's a matter of changing our mindset and try to live only with what's realy essential and what brings value to us, as well as encouraging the power of detachment, detachment from things for example and that can then be taken to all areas of our lives. Less things = less worries and stress = simple and light life and above all free. Thank you Seve 👌👏
