Jean Simmons and Marlon Brando as Sarah Brown and Sky Masterson. Notably, this is Brando's only musical film role. Jean Simmons sings undubbed and makes a delightful drunk in this number.
You're not, Michael Edwards. I love that "Well sir" is in the lyrics. It's just so typical of the way otherwise-normal people talk when they're drunk. She does it well. :)
@@malvavisco10 People dub voices of actors when they feel they're not strong enough or fit the role, even if they are classically trained and have singing experience. Notable ones were Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady" and Natalie Wood in "West Side Story", whose singing were both dubbed by Marni Nixon.
This acting and performance is INSANELY good!!! Every action, even the gimmicky ones, looks realistically drunken and hilarious. And the voice matches wonderfully!!
A neighbor up the street asked me to help her daughter with her chemistry homework. I said sure. So after I talked with the girl for ten or fifteen minutes, she was more bored than when I first found her. So I played this. The girl came alive, almost. She remained a little uneasy because she was, after all, at home, and her mother was in the other room. And here, she, the daughter, was sitting near an old guy, me. Her mother, however, wanted to know what on earth I was doing. I said, listen. She did. After that, all went well. The daughter went on to pass the course. She even did well at calculating the solubilities of ordinary ionic salts in water . (Wasn't that last sentence a mouthful? Yeah, chemistry!)
upworld1 Yes ok it brings her guard and she’s responding to him the way he wants her to. But it’s only because of the alcohol that she’s doing any of this. Dutch courage is one thing but being off your face by a few cocktails is another.
Always heard Miles Davis play this tune and decided to look at the lyrics. Thank you to jazz musicians who always record and keep america's songbook alive!
Listening to this cast do the first musical I played pit orchestra for is...amazing. It's been 42 years and the emotions run high. I love love love love this musical. I can't believe I've never had another chance to do it. I will, for sure! This song is...pure joy.
What a great scene and great interaction between the two. I find it hard to believe that the sound wasn't dubbed in later....she's not even out of breath and her voice doesn't fade in and out over the mic..
Ask me how do I feel Ask me now that we're cozy and clinging Well sir, all I can say, is if I were a bell I'd be ringing! From the moment we kissed tonight That's the way I've just gotta behave Boy, if I were a lamp I'd light And If I were a banner I'd wave! Ask me how do I feel, little me with my quiet upbringing Well sir, all I can say is if I were a gate I'd be swinging! And if I were a watch I'd start popping my springs! Or if I were a bell I'd go ding dong, ding dong ding! Ask me how do I feel from this chemistry lesson I'm learning. SKY (spoken) Uh, chemistry? SARAH (spoken) Yes, chemistry! Well sir, all I can say is if I were a bridge I'd be burning! Yes, I knew my morale would crack From the wonderful way that you looked! Boy, if I were a duck I'd quack! Or if I were a goose I'd be cooked! Ask me how do I feel, ask me now that we're fondly caressing Pal, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing Ask me how to describe this whole beautiful thing Well, if I were a bell I'd go ding dong, ding dong ding!
The musical premiered on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre on November 24, 1950. It was directed by George S. Kaufman, with dances and musical numbers by Michael Kidd, scenic and lighting design by Jo Mielziner, costumes by Alvin Colt, and orchestrations by George Bassman and Ted Royal, with vocal arrangements by Herbert Greene. It starred Robert Alda (Sky), Sam Levene (Nathan), Isabel Bigley (Sarah), and Vivian Blaine (Adelaide). The West End premiere opened at the London Coliseum on May 28, 1953 and ran for 555 performances. The cast starred Vivian Blaine, Sam Levene, Lizbeth Webb and Jerry Wayne. Lizbeth Webb was the only major principal who was British and was chosen to play the part of Sarah Brown by Frank Loesser. One of Broadways greatest 20th century musicals. Thanks for uploading this video.
Brando is the greatest actor because of his unmatched acting range. From 1950-60 he played a paraplegic in THE MEN, Stanley Kowalski in STREETCAR, Mexican revolutionary in VIVA ZAPATA, Mark Anthony in JULIUS CEASAR, a Hell's Angel. Terry Malloy in ON THE WATERFRONT, Napoleon in DESIREE, sang and danced in GUYS AND DOLLS, Japanese man, Sakini, in TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON, a contrite nazi in YOUNG LIONS then directed ONE EYED JACKS.
@@margolane8529 WHO CARES????? Everyone's having fun posting neat little comments about the movie and the cast, but there's always at least one in the bunch who tries to assassinate someone's character. Go away!
