I love that on the product page, Dan's blob is the only one which doesn't have any credentials listed. Everyone else on there is like "Mastering Engineer" with a bunch of AAA artists and Dan's testimonial blurb just says "Dan Worrall". Acceptable, imo.

This plugin is the single most useful thing I've ever bought for music. The thing I always struggled with was making a mix loud and keeping the clarity of tone I wanted, without clipping in my DAW. Is this inexperience? Yes. But this solves my problem completely and I'm all for that.

It's refreshing to see honest reviews. I understand that today, more than ever, artists and musicians are struggling to achieve financial freedom and that commercial partnerships and sponsorships are a crucial source of income for some, but ultimately it's bad for the consumer when the people involved are incentivized to not say anything negative or speak their mind honestly. Personally, I rarely reference sponsored content when evaluating a product because I don't feel like i'm getting the complete story. I'm more likely to just read user reviews on forums. Hopefully more companies will see that allowing honest reviews of their products will ultimately lead to more consumer trust and more profits. As always, thanks Dan for the wonderful content. I look forward to the next one!

I'm not even honestly sure 'sponsored' is the best term here because as far as I can see it's a very healthy relationship whereas sponsorship can sometimes seem questionable credibility-wise. You say you have 100% creative freedom, your bona fides and insight are rock-solid so it's in the dev's and ultimately the user's best interest to get a quality product into your hands and take any insight that can effectively be integrated to heart. That plus Dan getting paid? 3-way win if you ask me.

This concept is incredibly useful - I am surprised more limiters don't take advantage of a similar concept to the Focus tool here. This + a clipper is clearly all you need for super loud, transparent masters.

I am offended that you did not mention the discount code in your video :P More seriously though, if you choose to let a company use your channel and voice as a commercial outlet, even if you don't have full creative freedom, it is completely fine. What's important is that you make it clear that the video is or includes a paid sponsorship. Some channels, like LTT for instance, chooses to reserve certain keywords like "review" to indicate that the video is entirely independent. This helps your viewers steer toward the content they care about and it helps you continue to make the videos you want.

It seems that this limiter plugin has some RMS compression built in to the algorithm, for example Izotope's Maximizer has something very similar in their IRC III and IV modes where there is some kind of spectral shaping tool that helps the limiter to perform better, and I think this is the case here, the clear difference is the harmonic response between this tool and a typical limiter and this re-enforces this idea of something happening in the background to compensate for any "unwanted artifacts", for me I prefer a workflow of doing little bits in different parts of the signal chain, for example, a compressor doing gentle reduction in one part, a dynamic EQ before the limiter and the final limiting stage, I think you get more accurate results than let one plugin do all that for you, I think this plugin would benefit someone in post-production, not in a master bus.

Interesting. I wouldn't associate "attack" with a limiter since it could produce overs, but perhaps the lookahead aspect of this is what makes the difference here?
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 3 года назад
A brick wall limiter, by its nature, can't increase peak levels of transients like some compressors can. But the manner in which they're controlled, and what happens immediately afterwards, can definitely change the way you perceive them.
@NikolajChristensen

what's the point in oversampling + true peak? is true peak even needed with an oversampling?
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 3 года назад
Oversampling reduces true peaks, but doesn't eliminate them entirely. Oversampling is probably most useful when using the Drive / Emphasis.
@PASHKULI
@PASHKULI 3 года назад
True peak clipping is always expected to happen when re\over sampling has been applied - especially in the mastering stage, where peak levels are in the loudness interval of -1 to 0dBFS. It is not audible for the most consumers and this audibility depends on the audio material (but it is there and professional equipment will detect it). Although I have seen professional masters with ISP occurring (imprinted) anyway.

Why are the input and output meters going above 0 dB? What's helpful with that?
@DanWorrall

Input meter: because the input can exceed full scale, even if you're not boosting it up with the input gain slider. Output meter: because it would suck if it were different to the input meter.
@cornerliston
@cornerliston 3 года назад
@@DanWorrall Good to hear. But wouldn't it suck if the output signal exceeds 0 dB? Wouldn't it make more sense if the meters stopped at 0? What advantage is there to have the input exceeding full scale? I guess you're point for the output is to have the scale being consistent but it looks weird for a limiter. I'm happy to hear what advantages could be with this.
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 3 года назад
There is an advantage in floating point signals being able to exceed full scale without actually clipping. But you'll need to turn down those peaks sooner or later, before it becomes an integer signal. One of the reasons you might want a plugin like Boost is to catch and control those overs. So the meters display them, at least for the first few dB. (I'm just guessing these were the developer's reasons. I see no problem with it, and didn't raise it with him).

Actually, this promotional video felt even better than the other ones. Lots of integrity from your part and from the developers. Congrats on such genuine collaboration.
