If Marty Friedman Played METALLICA'S Lux Æterna

What would it sound like If Marty Friedman Played METALLICA'S Lux Æterna? Lord Bradley Hall recently redid the solo from Metallica's new track, saying he was "underwhelmed" with the original. As I listened, it felt like Bradley was channeling the POWER of Lord Marty Friedman of MEGADETH. Exotic/Erotic scales, dynamics and level 666 creativity. The question is, what's the secret to becoming a LEAD LORD? I deconstruct Bradley's take on Kirk Hammett's catastrophe and breakdown the Phrygian Dominant scale he's using. Middle eastern and far east scales are a staple aspect of Marty Friedman's style and sound. Learn more about these unique note choices in my FREE course BELOW muhahaha!

Hammet’s solo sound like Hammet, the same thing he’s been doing forever, but then again, it’s instantly recognizable. That ‘new’ solo had some nice elements but not all sections fitted together. Sounded like an exercise instead of a solo…
@mylesbell8281
@mylesbell8281 Месяц назад
I agree 100%. It just sounds like a bunch of random sweep exercises that aren't really connected very well. I feel like it would have been much better if he just stuck to minor pentatonic with some slight deviation. I think it would also have been better if he had made clear sections to his solo instead of just busting all over the fretboard randomly 😂

A fleet of elitist snobs still haven't figured out that even heavy metal needs to have a groove and the people playing in your song gotta be in that groove. Hall had none of that. The funny thing is that people are portraying Hall's solo as "What if Marty Friedman played instead". Yeah, no. It is inspired by Marty, sure, but knowing how Marty actually plays, he wouldn't sound like that for Lux Aeterna. Hall just went with the most exotic notes he could think of. Marty would probably have stuck to Pentatonic with some exotic notes.

I don't mind Kirk not using a lot of scales in his solos, but god damn, the solo from this song doesn't tell you anything, it's all over the place... Zakk Wylde uses the pentatonic scale religiously it certainly doesn't make him a bad guitarist and while I agree that kirk hammett has had his day and past his use by date that's more to do with his over abuse of the wah pedal and laziness in not applying himself to writing a solo on par with his earlier years! Regardless of any criticism the main factor is that Kirk gets paid regardless and he gets paid an eye watering amount case in point the album St Anger has a lack of guitar solo's on all the tracks on that release but guess what....... kirk still took home a huge pay check! In my humble opinion, when it comes to art, it's all about the creator's feelings at the time of creating their work. It's not about pleasing people but demonstrating the creator's feelings at that moment. If pleasing people was the case, then people would go out of their minds and say "This is a commercial work. They go out of their way to keep their audience entertained, etc.". I'm not defending Kirk's solo on this song nor do I blame him. This actually reminded me of one of Dave Mustaine's interviews that I quoted below. "Speaking of lead guitar, Dave, what’s your approach to soloing as a player and as a writer/producer? Mustaine: When you live, breathe, and feel the song that you’re writing, the song pretty much tells you what it needs. I’m not a believer that a solo has to be shredding with a wang bar, though I think a lot of people do some really great work with that. I’m of the belief that a player like David Gilmour could do more with one note than some of today’s shredders can do with a dozen. On some of these solos that are ripping fast, you just hear rrrrrrrrrr. It’s like, “Man, come on!”"

Solos like the thing that should not be, blackened, and wherever I may roam use it. The reason modern Metallica solos are so pentatonic based is because they're improvised. Just for you kids out there, I knew the old spirit of metal was dead when the music scholars and intellectuals started analyzing metal bar by bar. Back in the day we had punk and metal to get away from this elitist, white collar nonsense and it acted as a big middle finger to them. Now a days we are no different. It started with the late 80s virtuoso movement, then grunge was the new middle finger, then the internet came and we have a new wave of metal scholars talking about modes and stuff actual great metal bands never cared about.

Pentatonic scales is good sounding and a very powerful scale, using it doesnt mean youre are technically poor, its just a mode that a musician chose to develop and improve. The fact that Metallica still lives until today with so many followers and very high album sales. Metallca as a band captured the hearts of millions, maybe the lead part may not sound appealing to you, as a whole, the band created tons of songs that are undeniably good that many can relate and appreciate.

Pretty sure Wherever I May Roam was entirely in phrygian dominant, including and especially the solo. In Lux Aeterna, Kirk recorded an improvised solo that he thought matched the vibe and feel of the song. Music is feel first, complexity last,. If you want to write a good song, you leave your ego outside and keep it simple stupid. If Kirk wanted to write another Creeping Death solo, or another God that Failed solo he would have; he just chose not to. So let's not forget that.

People have been ragging on Kirk Hammett for decades. Expand your perception, do you know how difficult it would be to have a 40 year song catalog and try to please people? It's so difficult that the biggest band in the world are the only ones to do it, EVERYONE else in rock music is an oldies act.....wait.....okay Megadeth and Slayer. what other rock bands were cranking out new music at 60? I find annoying that people bash him because of the Minor Pentatonic use/abuse. The problem of the solo in question, for me, is not the scale, but the use of the most basic and cliché licks possible. Feels like a solo of a 15 yo on his high school talent band.

He repeats the same two beats five additional times before moving on to something else, and that something else is also repeated three times. Then he just grabs the whammy bar like it stole his iPhone. Eterna’s solo is kind of an odd one to me, while it fits the feel of the song and general craziness of the part, it relies on Kirk clichés heavily. Overall, 72 season’s solos are more in tune with the song and relatively unpredictable than his previous attempts, excluding some examples from hardwired. I found them to be non obnoxious but not very memorable either. IMO, of course. Sidenote: I’m a fan of Bradley’s solo except for the beginning. That’s just a taste thing for me though.
