I’m a giant Danelectro fanboy. I have the entire ‘food’ series on 2 sequential boards. They may be plastic, but some of those are best in class effects (univibe, tremolo, chorus, rotary…). I have 6 of the large steel enclosure pedals, including the original Nack Talk… talk about tanks! I have this wasabi pedal plus the overdrive. Even geekier, I have one of their electric 12-strings that I adore and a U-2 six string. I loved your Silvertone style guitar!! I’m a sucker for lipstick pickups. This was a super fun video to need out to. Thanks for the deep dive! Your animations are really progressing! It’s been exciting to watch your channel continue to grow. Keep up the great work! Definitely see you on the next one.

Have you tried the paisley pedals ? The liquid metal black paisley is really good. From my understanding it's a souped up version of the Black Liquorice which is also a great food series pedal. Funny how there is a giant market for octave up fuzz pedals (the jhs/ehx Lizard Queen beeing a current example) but almost no demand for metal distortion that add an octave down. Its such a cool and usable sound whereas analog octave up fuzz effects are often frustrating, extremely hard to play, almost like an Instrument itself imho. If you have the Black Liquorice treat yourself to the Black Paisley. Great collectors Item too.

@@alexanderm6049 I’ll have to check it out. I do have the Black Licorice and I love it for some really raw textures. Thanks for the heads up!

It was one of the best reviews I have ever seen. You showed even the interior of the pedal! I only missed to hear it in some extreme leslie psychedelic settings, but ok, nothing is perfect.

It's a smart pedal. Not that a person who owned both a chorus and tremolo device *couldn't* get any of those sounds, but packaging them in the same unit prompts the user to *think* about how they might be combined in interesting ways. I like it.

Very interesting, never saw this Danelectro series. Really like a car or even a little spaceship. Maybe that's why there's a Starman [waiting in the sky] on your T-shirt ))) And sounds great. Thanks for the review!

My first pedal was a danalectro fab tone - my guitar teacher worked at a small music shop and I don't even think he charged me, but I was really into smashing pumpkins (the band you perverts) and I didn't know how to play or use it but I still have it and it's actually a great lead tone for layering pumpkins stuff. It can be modes better of course.

Another most excellent episode. I too am a sucker for creatively-integrated LEDs and status lights, as well as fun and weird enclosures. It's always a bonus when the pedal actually fits my needs. I know that should be the other way around (tone before aesthetic), but, well, there you go. Anyway... on a broader note, I really appreciate and enjoy that you feature "old" pedals along with the new ones. So, thanks! Oh, and I may be late to the game here, but I'm guessing the bass beanie/ski cap helps with the low end. Heh. Cheers!

Thank you so much! With this pedal, and a few others, the looks draw me in, and then there's a huge relief on my part when it actually performs well and plays like a tool and not a toy. When it comes to older pedals, I'm of the belief that nothing really ever goes out of style, and a circuit from 1992 is just as relevant in 2023. People are constantly "discovering" pedals that have been available (and usually inexpensively!) for years. I think there's still plenty of pedals that fall into the "old but not old enough to be considered vintage" valley. That's my sweet spot, I think. The 90's/early 2000's is also when I started playing guitar and started seeing all of this gear that I wanted but couldn't afford. The beanie cap has a story and a real practical purpose. A few years ago, I was playing in a cover band and we had a bass player who always wore a beanie cap. Even on 105(F) degree days. He quit the band, and we were auditioning replacements, and the first guy who showed up... had a beanie which he wore the whole time. So in my mind, bass players always wear beanie caps. Which is why I started wearing it, but it also helps break up the video so it's not "the same" three guys back to back to back. Having the difference helps telegraph the change a little better. Or at least that's my theory... and at this point, I can't *stop* doing it, soo...

@@StompboxBreakdown Thanks for sharing the “VH1 Behind The Music” story about the bass beanie! 😁 I love stories like that. And yes, it does break up the visual aspect of your jams. There certainly are plenty of not-quite-vintage pedals out there. I too can connect with a pedal because of its place in pedal history. I just watched an older video of yours about the EHX Hot Wax. The first pedal I ever owned (and still own) is the Hot Tubes. From 1979. Big metal box with a hard-wired power cord. Even though I never quite connected with it, I won’t get rid of it. Reminds me of my early days of playing.

Love Danos, love all their products. Do wish their older pedals didn't have those lousy jacks. But give me some lipsticks and the gnarliest fuzz and I could fell the entire rainforest (not that... that would be a good idea... but it could do it, if need be.) I'd love to happen upon some of this Wasabi line. This pedal is divine.

I actually think the Belling chips sound better than cool audio chips, or rather the devices that use those chips seem to benefit it be better designed. I've heard cool audio chips sound great. But I do think the belling chips in older carbon copies sound better than the cool audio versions we hear in their bright and deluxe or anniversary versions. Could be all hoopla and I'm not technical but when I have tried stuff with "fancier chips" the resulting sound either because of thoughtful design or superior performance from the bbd - or both, seems to be noticeably better, in terms of fidelity and headroom and overall fluidity between repeats. As if the sampling rate is the same but has a headwind on one and a tailwind on the other.

Sorry third comment - this sounds really good man. It's got the vibrato of a chorus just enough to combine with the fan of the trem to get an actual Leslie sound that is more convincing than most modulation pedals on which we just turn up the rate. The depth of the trem is useful too, I'm impressed! Reminds of the vibrothang - any thoughts?
@StompboxBreakdown
@StompboxBreakdown Год назад
Definitely reminiscent of Vibro-Thang, even if completely different circuitry behind it. I'm a big fan of effects that impart aspects of other effects into a seemingly simple effect. The more I explored the interplay between the speed and depth, and the more I mixed the chorus and vibrato, the more I found really interesting possibilities that didn't sound at all like chorus OR vibrato.

Great Pick ! Always a pleasure to watch your reviews. You are pointing out something very interesting here, capacitor age in relation to noise. I always wondered why some people on forums claim this and that pedal is noisy while others don't seem to have a problem with that. Could that be because of different component age ? Does using a pedal make the capacitors age faster ? God I hope not! Anyway, I own this pedal and the Rock-A-Bye from the same line. Bought them on holiday on Italy. Unfortunately my Chorus/Trem is super noisy on all EQ settings exept for flat so I guess there is something wrong with it. The Rock-A-Bye should in theory be the perfect Rockabilly pedal. Slap-echo plus classic overdrive in a cool Cadillac style enclosure. What could go wrong ? Sadly the overdrive is very weak, comparable and maybe even based on Danelectro's very own Pastrami (food series) which isn't exactly the best.

Electrolytic caps have a limited lifespan in terms of usage hours, but they also dry out if you don't use them. So you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. But if the caps are going to dry out in 30-40 years anyway, why not play it in the meantime? ;)
@StompboxBreakdown
@StompboxBreakdown Год назад
+1 to what Casey said. When capacitors start to go, they can manifest in strange ways. Oscillation shapes start to drift around, sound can get thin or muddy. All those first-gen Boss pedals that people hold up as shining textbook specimens of their effects, like the CE-2, PH-1(r), VB-2... anyone looking to pick one up should be aware that there's a good chance it'll need recapping to sound as it was intended when new.
@paulperry7091
@paulperry7091 Год назад
Using the pedal won't age the caps faster, but storing pedals somewhere hot will. Electrolytic life is temperature dependant. Also, if this pedal noise sounds like white noise hiss, it's probably the bucket brigade delay, they are never silent.

Nice video, as usual. I love how quirky Dano stuff can be but I generally can’t stand the plastic jacks. What guitar was that tele looking thing? I saw it was a Reverend, was it the Pete A baritone? I’d love a Nashville tele with a trem.
@StompboxBreakdown
@StompboxBreakdown Год назад
Thank you! And agreed. I’ve only ever had a few pedals ever break on me, and more than 1 in that list were Danelectros. The black guitar is a new one to me, it’s a Pete Anderson Eastsider. It’s basically a Tele-shaped Strat. Really nicely balanced guitar, I’m having a lot of fun with it. I’ve never played with a baritone, but really want to. Maybe next guitar.
@al271987
@al271987 Год назад
Gotcha, now that I look closer I see that it’s missing the mounting plate for the bridge pickup, I thought it had the plate, which I only saw on the baritone. Cool, I’ll be looking for one of those or a six gun tl, which ever one I can find easier and cheaper.

The Eastsider S has the three pickups, the Eastsider T has the more Tele-style setup. No matter what way you go, you’ll be happy!

@wesmitchem825
@wesmitchem825 Год назад
@@StompboxBreakdown well there's the two versions of the TalkBack but there's also a wasabi reverse delay that had regular and reverse delay on it with the same wasabi format with the EQ presets and pickup compensation switch and I think the way the footswitchs went were on and off on the right and from Normal to reverse delay on the left or something like that it's way cooler than the standard backtalk delays and you used to be able to find em for around 100$ but then it appeared on a jhs hidden gems video and now I could probably get a vintage memory man for the same price

I appreciate the feedback! This is such a fun thing for me, I’m glad people enjoy it back. The Dano pedals have such an interesting history, and so many that people swear by that nobody has ever heard of. Like, I have a friend, big studio musician, swears by the hash browns flanger. He keeps buying them because they keep breaking but he uses the modulation effect and it’s part of his sound. Crazy stuff.

There have been a few demo jams that I wouldn't mind turning into full-length songs. Actually, a few I've given away to friends who used as a jumping-off point for something else, but yeah... that one I saw lots of possibilities, even though it's just a simple three chord progression. I definitely see the In Your Eyes Verse part. Thank you!
